feat(memory): catch contradictions in other languages and long sentences - #338
Contradiction detection pairs facts by subject and attribute family using English keyword matching, and the subject has to appear in the first few words with the right capitalization. That misses any non-English fact outright, and long sentences like "Last year in March, after the wedding, Riya moved to Mumbai." (no subject found at all, so the fact is never grouped with anything else of hers).
Words are now tokenized by Unicode category (letter / mark / number) instead of an ASCII-only regex, so names in Devanagari, Cyrillic, CJK etc. are found at all. Marks (vowel signs - Devanagari matras and similar) continue a word instead of ending it: plain \w stops at the first one, which truncated "माया" to "म".
Scripts without a case distinction (Devanagari, CJK, ...) can't use capitalization as the "this looks like a name" signal, so there any non-skip word is accepted as a candidate instead. Necessarily cruder than the capitalization check, and only reliable when the subject leads the sentence - documented as such in the docstring.
Two bugs found along the way, fixed: capitalized month names ("March") were being mistaken for a person's name, and the function gave up entirely on the first lowercase word it didn't recognize - which is exactly what broke the long-sentence example above, three words short of ever reaching "Riya". It now just keeps scanning (bounded to 12 words, enough to clear a short leading clause) instead of aborting.
Keeps its English keyword regexes as the fast path - unchanged, and free for every existing English fact. A new embedding-based fallback (embedding_attribute_families / profile_fact_async) runs only when that comes back empty, which in practice means non-English text: it compares the fact's embedding against a short description of each family, above a new MemoryConfig.family_similarity threshold (default 0.78 - local embedding models reportedly score unrelated text around 0.65, same reasoning as UserModelConfig.context_min_similarity).
Wired into FactMemory._related_facts and DreamingService.contradiction_pairs (now async), the nightly consolidation pass this is mainly for - that's where facts actually get grouped by subject and settled.
test_subject_in_non_english_script: a Hindi (Devanagari) "lives in"/"moved to" pair resolves to the same subject.
test_subject_past_a_long_leading_clause: the issue's exact long-sentence example.
test_embedding_attribute_families_matches_the_closest_prototype: the pure embedding-similarity function picks the right family and respects the threshold, using a deterministic injected embedder (one-hot vectors per family).
test_profile_fact_async_only_falls_back_when_keywords_find_nothing: confirms the embedder is never called for English text (keyword match already found something), and is called for non-English text.
I removed the implementation and reran tests/memory/test_dreaming.py first: it fails on an ImportError for the new symbols, confirming the new tests exercise the new code.
Two unrelated, pre-existing failures in the full run, both reproduce identically on a clean checkout of main with no changes applied:
tests/channels/test_telegram.py::test_voice_note_is_transcribed_and_answered - flaky; passes on a second run.
tests/test_hardware_context.py::test_detect_never_fails_when_every_probe_does - fails on Apple Silicon because the test's monkeypatched probe list doesn't include whatever probe reports the on-chip GPU (my machine has an Apple M5), so detect() still returns a GPU entry. Unrelated to anything here.

Memory can identify fact families through semantic similarity when keyword matching finds no match, including across languages.
Family selection compares the top two matches and uses a configurable margin, defaulting to 0.02.
Improvements
Subject detection supports Unicode names and longer sentences, and better distinguishes leading clauses from places or times mentioned after prepositions.
Related-fact matching and contradiction detection use semantic profiles. Contradictions can be detected across languages and in long sentences, with newer memories replacing older contradictory ones.
Contradiction detection paired facts by subject and attribute family using
English keyword matching, and the subject had to appear in the first 6 words
with the right capitalization - so it missed any non-English fact, and long
sentences like "Last year in March, after the wedding, Riya moved to Mumbai."
fact_subjects (sentient/memory/facts.py):
- Words are now tokenized by Unicode category (letter/mark/number) instead of
an ASCII regex, so Devanagari, Cyrillic, CJK etc. names are found at all.
Marks (vowel signs like Devanagari matras) continue a word instead of
ending it - plain \w stops at the first one, which truncated "माया" to "म".
- Scripts without a case distinction can't use capitalization as the
"this looks like a name" signal, so any non-skip word is accepted there.
- Fixed two bugs found along the way: capitalized month names ("March") were
mistaken for a person's name, and the function gave up entirely on the
first unrecognized lowercase word - exactly what broke the long-sentence
example above, three words short of reaching "Riya".
attribute_families keeps its English keyword regexes as the fast path,
unchanged and free for existing English facts. A new embedding-based
fallback (embedding_attribute_families / profile_fact_async) runs only when
that comes back empty - typically non-English text - comparing the fact
against a short description of each family (new MemoryConfig.family_similarity
threshold). Wired into FactMemory._related_facts and DreamingService.
contradiction_pairs (now async), the nightly consolidation pass this is
mainly for.
Tests cover a Hindi (Devanagari) example and the long-sentence case.

Fact profiling now supports Unicode subject extraction and embedding-based attribute-family matching. Related-fact lookup and contradiction detection use asynchronous profiling with the configured family margin.
Subject detection scans up to 12 words, handles Unicode names, and skips likely places or times after prepositions. Profiles use subject_aliases. Tests cover Devanagari, long lead clauses, years, and places.
Embedding-based family profiling sentient/config/schema.py, sentient/memory/facts.py, tests/memory/test_dreaming.py
MemoryConfig adds family_margin, defaulting to 0.02 with a range of 0.0–1.0. When keyword matching finds no family, async profiling uses cached family-description embeddings and selects a family only when its score beats the runner-up by the configured margin. Related-fact lookup profiles the input and candidate facts asynchronously. Tests cover margin matching, vector reuse, fallback, and embedding errors.
contradiction_pairs becomes asynchronous and profiles facts with the memory embedder, model key, configured margin, and stored vectors. _contradiction_step awaits it. The API documentation and changelog describe the contradiction matching changes.

Some multilingual facts can still miss related facts or contradiction pairs, and certain location endings can produce the wrong subject. Resolve these gaps before merging unless the limitations are explicitly accepted.

No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A party able to introduce eligible active facts can influence the new classification work and broaden contradiction candidates within the configured memory store. Dreaming scans facts across that store, but still requires equal scopes before requesting a contradiction decision or superseding a fact. These checks are evidence of scope containment in this path, not proof of application-wide tenant isolation.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Fallback fact text reaches the existing configured embedding endpoint. The inspected provider applies local-only admission and, when installed, budget-meter admission before outbound embedding requests. Endpoint configuration and credentials remain configuration-derived rather than fact-text-derived. These controls are inherited unchanged; actual deployment destinations and meter installation were not verified.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The added profiling awaits finish before contradiction supersession begins, so interruption during profiling does not partially apply a contradiction decision. The pre-existing stop path cancels without explicitly finalizing the running dream; halt records termination and startup recovers persisted running records. The new await adds interruption sites, but production shutdown behavior and material amplification of that existing lifecycle weakness remain unverified.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Consider a separate embedding-work or elapsed-time budget for profiling, including an early exit when contradiction processing has no remaining budget. This would bound maintenance dependency exposure independently of the existing confirmation-call limit; it is a resilience proposal, not an observed security finding.

Reuse compatible vectors or batch fallback embeddings.
When keyword families are empty, profile_fact_async calls embedding_attribute_families, which embeds each fact separately. With the default max_facts of 500, this can create 500 sequential provider calls. The 64-entry cache cannot retain a full pass.
LLMProvider.embed already accepts batches. Alternatively, reuse an active fact's stored vector only when its embedding_model matches the current embedding model and its dimension is compatible. active_facts must expose that metadata first. Apply the same compatibility check or batching to _related_facts.

Welcome @anushkaanair, and thank you for a careful PR! The long-sentence fix works: "Last year in March, after the wedding, Riya moved to Mumbai." now pairs with "Riya lives in Pune.", which main misses. The month-name and vowel-sign fixes are good too. A real run with the default local models turned up a few things before this can merge:
Words starting with digits and symbols (facts.py ~139, ~241). Digits, ' and - can start a word and count as name-like. "In 2021 Kabir moved to Delhi." and "In 2021 Karan moved to Goa." both get the subject 2021 and are paired as a contradiction, and "In 2020 Maya moved to Pune." no longer finds Maya. Please start words with a letter only.
Places picked up as subjects (~245). Scanning past lowercase words now picks the first capitalized place. "After the trip to Goa, Kabir started working at Infosys." and "After the trip to Goa, Karan started working at Wipro." both get goa, and the real dream paired them. Could you skip a capitalized word that follows a preposition (in, to, from, at, after...), and add tests with two different people?
Scripts without capitals. Any word becomes the subject, and the skip list is English only. "पिछले" ("last") and "वह" become subjects, and "माया की बहन रिया" gets माया. Please narrow this, for example to the first word only, with a small skip list of common Hindi time words and pronouns, and add tests with different people.
The default embedding model. With nomic-embed-text, the fallback never triggers: Hindi facts scored 0.44 to 0.49 against every family, so the Hindi Pune/Delhi pair was still not found. Please test with the default model, or find families another way.
Speed. Please compare against the vectors each fact already has instead of embedding them again. A dream over 500 facts without a keyword family made 500 calls (241 s against 14.5 s on main), and saving one memory can make up to 60.
Embedding failures. If embedding fails, please fall back to the keyword profile instead of failing the contradiction step.
Docs. Please add a CHANGELOG line and mention memory.family_similarity in docs/API.md (the Dreams section).

When both facts are Hindi-only, keyword_tokens produces no subject term and FAMILY_TERMS adds only English terms. _keyword_ids therefore cannot return the older Hindi fact. The new embedding family match never reaches the candidate comparison. Add a Unicode-aware subject lookup or another candidate source before filtering by the profiles.

Hi @anushkaanair, a heads-up on a conflict that's our doing, not yours. Our #471 (fixing a bug where a fact about someone else overwrote the user's own memory) rewrote fact_subjects in sentient/memory/facts.py, and its rule is the opposite of yours:
main stops at the first ordinary lowercase word, so "She moved to Mumbai." has no subject;
A middle rule would keep both working: skip lowercase words only inside a leading clause that ends with a comma ("Last year in March, after the wedding, …"), and otherwise stop as main does. Everything else in your PR (the embedding fallback, the async dreaming change, the config key, the docs) merges cleanly.
If you're still working on this, tell me and I'll do the merge with that rule on your branch, so you only need to look at the review items from before. No rush!
Merges main (existence-master#471 rewrote fact_subjects since this branch was opened, and
added sentient/memory/scripts.py's devanagari_subjects, existence-master#339/existence-master#351/existence-master#463) and
answers every point of @itsskofficial's review:
1. Words starting with a digit or symbol: _NAME_WORD_RE still tokenizes a
bare year ("2021") so it keeps its place for the preposition check below,
but isupper() is false for a digit either way, so it's never read as a
name - and is now explicitly skipped rather than aborting the scan, so
"In 2021 Kabir moved to Delhi." still finds Kabir.
2. A place after a preposition: a capitalized word right after "in", "to",
"from", "at", "after"... is never read as the subject, so "the trip to
Goa, Kabir ..." finds Kabir, not Goa.
3. Scripts without capitals: fact_subjects no longer guesses at non-English
text (reverted to the main behavior - empty, same as "She moved to
Delhi."). profile_fact now calls subject_aliases instead, which already
dispatches a Devanagari fact to scripts.devanagari_subjects - the
existing, tested, narrow (first word, Hindi-specific skip list) reader -
rather than reinventing a cruder version of it.
4. The default embedding model: embedding_attribute_families no longer
checks a fixed similarity floor (a Hindi fact scored 0.44-0.49 against
every family alike against nomic-embed-text, well under the old 0.78).
It compares the best-scoring family against the runner-up instead
(memory.family_margin, default 0.02), which needs no calibration to a
given model's noise floor.
5. Speed: profile_fact_async takes an optional ``vector`` - the fact's own
embedding, already stored - and reuses it instead of embedding the text
again when its dimension matches the prototypes'. contradiction_pairs
passes each fact's stored vector through.
6. Embedding failures: profile_fact_async now catches embedding errors and
falls back to the keyword-only profile instead of failing the whole
contradiction step.
7. Docs: updated the Dreams section and changes/95.fixed.md for the above
(already added by the maintainer's chore commit on this branch; adjusted
the family-matching sentence to describe the margin, not a threshold).
New tests cover digit-leading and preposition-following words with two
different people each (so a shared placeholder subject would show up as a
false pair), the embedding margin's wiring, vector reuse, and the
embedding-failure fallback. Full suite: 338/338 in tests/memory, ruff clean.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Thanks for the thorough review — real bugs, all addressed in fb068d6 (merges main, which picked up #471's fact_subjects rewrite and scripts.py's devanagari_subjects cleanly):
Digit/symbol-led words - _NAME_WORD_RE still tokenizes a bare year so it keeps its position (needed for the preposition check below), but isupper() is false for a digit either way, so it's never read as a name - and now explicitly skipped rather than aborting the scan, so "In 2021 Kabir moved to Delhi." still finds Kabir, and the two sentences in your example no longer share a false 2021 subject.
Places after a preposition - a capitalized word right after in/to/from/at/after/... is never read as the subject now, so "...the trip to Goa, Kabir..." finds Kabir, not Goa.
Scripts without capitals - dropped my own guessing heuristic entirely. profile_fact now calls subject_aliases instead of fact_subjects directly, so a Devanagari fact gets its subject from your existing, tested scripts.devanagari_subjects (first word, Hindi-specific skip list) rather than a cruder reinvention of it. fact_subjects itself is back to reading only capital letters, same as main.
The default embedding model - swapped the fixed 0.78 floor for margin-based selection: the best-scoring family only counts if it's ahead of the runner-up by memory.family_margin (default 0.02). This needs no calibration to a given model's noise floor, so the 0.44-0.49-against-everything case you found should now resolve correctly as long as the right family scores even slightly ahead of the rest.
Speed - profile_fact_async takes an optional vector; contradiction_pairs passes each fact's already-stored embedding through instead of re-embedding, with a dimension check against the prototypes before trusting it (same guard the cosine(va, vb) call below already uses).
Embedding failures - now caught and logged, falling back to the keyword-only profile instead of failing the whole contradiction step.
Docs - adjusted the Dreams-section sentence and kept the changelog entry (both already on the branch from your chore commit) to describe the margin, not a threshold.
New tests cover 1 and 2 with two different people each, so a shared placeholder subject would show up as a false pair; 3 via subject_aliases/profile_fact; 4-6 via the embedding fallback directly. Full tests/memory suite: 338/338. ruff check clean.

CodeRabbit review on existence-master#338: fact_subjects("She moved to Delhi, India.") was
returning {"india"} - the comma in "Delhi, India" isn't a leading clause, but
permissive_until treated it as one since it only checked whether any comma
was present, not where. Gated it on the sentence's first word: a pronoun
("she", "he", "it", "they", "this", "that", "these", "those", "we") means no
subject here on purpose, regardless of what a later comma looks like.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Good catch — fixed in 218e977: the comma in "Delhi, India" isn't a leading clause, and `permissive_until` only checked whether a comma was present, not whether it followed one of those. Gated it on the sentence's first word instead: a pronoun (she/he/it/they/this/that/these/those/we) means no subject here on purpose, regardless of a later comma. `fact_subjects("She moved to Delhi, India.")` now returns `set()` as expected; added that plus the "He .../They ..." variants as a regression test.

Hi @anushkaanair, thank you for fb068d6 and 218e977, and for the clear replies. I re-tested on two real engines side by side, one on this branch and one on main (fresh data folders, ollama_chat/qwen3:8b as the model, default nomic-embed-text embeddings). For each case I saved a fact, then a second one, through POST /api/memories, and then ran a dream on the branch engine.
What works now
Long sentences (the headline fix). "Riya lives in Pune." followed by "Last year in March, after the wedding, Riya moved to Mumbai." gives UPDATE on this branch, with the old text kept as previous. Main ADDs a duplicate. 🎉
Hindi. "रोहन पुणे में रहता है।" followed by "रोहन अब दिल्ली में रहता है।" is an UPDATE (main does this too). "सुनीता इन्फोसिस में काम करती है।" followed by "…अब विप्रो में…" is an UPDATE.
Spanish in the dream. At save time "Lucía vive en Madrid." / "Lucía ahora vive en Sevilla." stayed as two memories, but the dream then settled it (contradictions_resolved: 1): Madrid was removed and Sevilla kept. A dream on main with the same pair resolved nothing (contradictions_resolved: 0), and it also left Riya's Pune/Mumbai pair in place.
Kept apart correctly: "Kabir lives in Delhi, India." vs "Kabir's sister Meera lives in Goa, India."; "अनीता चेन्नई में रहती है।" vs "अनीता की बहन कविता मुंबई में रहती है।"; "I work at Infosys…" vs "My sister works at Wipro…"; "In 2021 Vikram moved to Jaipur." vs "In 2021 Karan moved to Goa."; and the two "After the trip to Goa, Dev/Nikhil started working at…" facts. Items 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 of my last review hold.
tests/memory passes (339), ruff is clean, CI and CLA are green. I checked the four open CodeRabbit threads against the code (digit-led words, आज, the embedding fallback, stored vectors). All four are fixed, so I replied on each and resolved them.
Blocking: "City, Country" turns into the subject, and unrelated memories get overwritten 218e977 fixes "She moved to Delhi, India.", but only for sentences that start with a pronoun. Any other sentence that ends in "Place, Country" now gets the country as its subject (facts.py ~278, permissive_until). On this branch vs main:
fact
subject (branch)
subject (main)
The office moved to Pune, India.
india
none
Yesterday we went to Goa, India.
india
none
Last week the team moved to Austin, Texas.
texas
none
Two such facts then share a subject and the residence family, so correction_of treats the second as a correction of the first. It replaces the first without asking the model. On the real engine, these four unrelated facts collapsed into one memory, each one overwriting the one before (log: corrects fact 16, updated without asking the model):
"The office moved to Pune, India."
"Last week the dentist moved to Delhi, India."
"Yesterday the neighbours moved to Pune, India."
"Last year the bakery moved to Goa, India."
At the end only "Last year the bakery moved to Goa, India." was left. On main, the neighbours/bakery pair stayed as two memories. (To be fair, main has its own model-driven mix-up on the office/dentist pair, but it doesn't hit every "…, India" fact.) Could the leading-clause skip apply only to a comma clause that really comes first? One way: a capitalized word after the last comma counts only when more of the sentence follows it ("…, Riya moved to Mumbai"), not when it ends the sentence ("…Delhi, India."). Please add tests with non-pronoun "Place, Country" endings, such as the three above, as pairs about different things.
Not blocking, but worth knowing: Hinglish and Spanish at save time behave exactly as on main. For "Arjun Pune mein rehta hai." → "Arjun ab Delhi mein rehta hai." and for the Lucía pair, qwen3:8b answered UPDATE. Then the check after the model overruled it: CUD UPDATE of 3 kept as ADD … (about something else), facts.py ~1764. The dream fixed Spanish but not the Hinglish pair. The changelog says "a newer memory in Hindi or another language … now replaces the older memory". You could narrow that wording, or log the model's rewritten content there to see which check rejects it. Up to you, and happy for that to be a follow-up.
Live-engine review on existence-master#338: 218e977 only guarded the pronoun case, so any
other sentence ending "..., Country." (no pronoun needed) still got the
country as its subject - "The office moved to Pune, India." read as
{"india"}. Two such facts then shared a subject and the residence family, so
the second silently overwrote the first as an unasked-for correction.
The real signal isn't whether the sentence leads with a pronoun, it's
whether a real clause follows the last comma at all: "Last year in March,
after the wedding, Riya moved to Mumbai." has one ("Riya moved to Mumbai"),
"The office moved to Pune, India." doesn't - only "India." trails the last
comma. permissive_until now requires more than one word after the last
comma, which covers both the pronoun case and every other "..., Place."
ending without needing to special-case either.
Verified against every example in the review (both confirmed-broken and
confirmed-still-working), plus the full existing suite.

Thank you for actually running this against two live engines side by side — that's a much better test than anything I could do from here, and it caught a real one.
Fixed in 5e6f0af: you're right that 218e977 only guarded the pronoun case. The real signal isn't whether the sentence leads with a pronoun, it's whether a clause follows the last comma at all — "Last year in March, after the wedding, Riya moved to Mumbai." has one ("Riya moved to Mumbai"), but "The office moved to Pune, India." doesn't: only "India." trails the last comma. permissive_until now requires more than one word after the last comma, which covers the pronoun case and every other "..., Place." ending in one rule, no special-casing needed.
Checked it against all three of your failing examples plus the office/dentist/neighbours/bakery chain, and against everything you confirmed as already working (the Riya/Mumbai headline case, Kabir/Delhi + Kabir's sister/Goa staying apart, the digit and preposition cases from before) — all correct. Added your exact examples as a regression test. tests/memory is 340/340, ruff clean.
On the non-blocking Hinglish/Spanish note — agreed that's a real gap and worth narrowing the changelog wording or adding the logging you suggested, but I'll treat it as a follow-up rather than widen this PR further. Let me know if you'd rather I fold it in now.

Identify the clause boundary before classifying a trailing location.
trailing_words > 1 misclassifies a two-word trailing location as a leading-clause boundary. For “The office moved to Pune, New Zealand”, the scan can return {"new"} as the subject.
A real leading clause followed by a one-word country tag is also missed. For “After the trip to Goa, Riya moved to Mumbai, India”, the final India segment disables the permissive scan, so fact_subjects returns no subject instead of {"riya"}.
Replace the word-count heuristic with structural handling that distinguishes a trailing Place, Country location from a clause that contains its own subject and predicate.

What and why
Contradiction detection pairs facts by subject and attribute family using English keyword matching, and the subject has to appear in the first few words with the right capitalization. That misses any non-English fact outright, and long sentences like "Last year in March, after the wedding, Riya moved to Mumbai." (no subject found at all, so the fact is never grouped with anything else of hers).
Closes #95
fact_subjects(subject detection)\wstops at the first one, which truncated "माया" to "म".attribute_families(residence / job / relationship / diet / ...)Keeps its English keyword regexes as the fast path - unchanged, and free for every existing English fact. A new embedding-based fallback (
embedding_attribute_families/profile_fact_async) runs only when that comes back empty, which in practice means non-English text: it compares the fact's embedding against a short description of each family, above a newMemoryConfig.family_similaritythreshold (default 0.78 - local embedding models reportedly score unrelated text around 0.65, same reasoning asUserModelConfig.context_min_similarity).Wired into
FactMemory._related_factsandDreamingService.contradiction_pairs(nowasync), the nightly consolidation pass this is mainly for - that's where facts actually get grouped by subject and settled. How I tested it
New tests in
tests/memory/test_dreaming.py:test_subject_in_non_english_script: a Hindi (Devanagari) "lives in"/"moved to" pair resolves to the same subject.test_subject_past_a_long_leading_clause: the issue's exact long-sentence example.test_embedding_attribute_families_matches_the_closest_prototype: the pure embedding-similarity function picks the right family and respects the threshold, using a deterministic injected embedder (one-hot vectors per family).test_profile_fact_async_only_falls_back_when_keywords_find_nothing: confirms the embedder is never called for English text (keyword match already found something), and is called for non-English text.I removed the implementation and reran
tests/memory/test_dreaming.pyfirst: it fails on anImportErrorfor the new symbols, confirming the new tests exercise the new code. Two unrelated, pre-existing failures in the full run, both reproduce identically on a clean checkout of
mainwith no changes applied:tests/channels/test_telegram.py::test_voice_note_is_transcribed_and_answered- flaky; passes on a second run.tests/test_hardware_context.py::test_detect_never_fails_when_every_probe_does- fails on Apple Silicon because the test's monkeypatched probe list doesn't include whatever probe reports the on-chip GPU (my machine has an Apple M5), sodetect()still returns a GPU entry.
