fix(tasks): stop planning on pause and ignore watch checks on paused … - #513
Addresses two remaining pause edge cases following #408 and #410:
Task being planned: Pausing a task while it was being planned did not stop planning within the same session (it only stopped across engine restarts via fix(tasks): a paused task stays paused when Sentient restarts #405). Now, _planning_paused(task_id) checks before each model call (_refine, _plan_job, before/after the planner call, and before committing the plan). If paused, it halts planning and leaves the task in planning status with the note "Paused before the plan was ready. Resume the task to continue." (PLAN_PAUSED_NOTE). Resuming the task clears the note and proceeds with planning.
Watch check finishing on paused task: When a scheduled watch check (task_type="script") was in flight while the task was paused, finishing the check started a new run that wasn't held. Now, _paused_scripts tracks active checks on paused tasks so in-flight checks do not start runs or send alerts, while manual "Run now" (manual=True) on a paused task continues to work.
Validated changelog fragment drafting with python packaging/release_changelog.py 3.0.0-alpha.1 --draft
Real test
Setup: Standalone engine test with SentientApp using an isolated temporary database.
Model: ollama_chat/qwen3:8b running locally via Ollama.
Steps & Output:
Created task "Summarize download folder".
While planning was in flight, paused the task (app.tasks.update(t_id, {"enabled": False})).
Confirmed status stayed in status: "planning", enabled: False, with note: Paused before the plan was ready. Resume the task to continue.
Resumed the task (app.tasks.update(t_id, {"enabled": True})).
Verified the note was cleared and the task continued planning.
What could not be tested: A live watch script on an external HTTP endpoint over multiple hours; covered by offline async tests using simulated delays.

Bug Fixes
Pausing a task during planning stops further model calls and preserves progress for when planning resumes.
Scheduled checks that finish while a task is paused won’t launch a task run or send follow-up notifications. In-flight errors are recorded without sending failure notifications.
Manual checks can still proceed while a task is paused, and an explicit manual run can still start the task.
Checks discard decisions if their settings change while they are running.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Planning now stops at pause checkpoints and can continue when the task resumes. Paused script checks retain check state but do not trigger automatic actions. An explicit run_now remains a manual run.
Changes: Task Pause Handling

Summary
Planning pause and resume checkpoints sentient/tasks/repo.py, sentient/tasks/service.py, tests/tasks/test_pause_stops_run.py, changes/413.fixed.md
Task updates can filter on enabled state. Planning checks for pauses and task-state changes around model calls and before saving results. Tests cover pause and resume behavior. The changelog describes planning pauses and checks that finish while paused.
Script checks distinguish manual checks and verify that task and script settings remain current. Checks that finish while paused suppress automatic actions and notifications. Tests cover paused checks, manual runs, and in-flight errors.
Pausing a task is mostly honored, but a few narrow timing windows remain. A planning model call or a scheduled script run can still fire right after a Pause, and a task resumed at the wrong moment can stay stuck in planning. These are low-probability races with bounded impact, but they undercut the PR's stated goal, so they should be fixed before merge.

Explanation
Issue #413 is open and directly linked. In sentient/tasks/service.py, planning checks pause state before and after model work and before plan commits. A paused task remains in planning with PLAN_PAUSED_NOTE. Resume clears the note and continues planning. Scheduled script checks recheck pause state before follow-up runs and notifications. Manual run_now passes manual=True and remains allowed. The added tests cover both pause cases, resume behavior, commit races, error handling, and manual execution.

Explanation
The changes stay within issue #413. The enabled filter in TaskRepo.update_task_if_status supports safe plan commits after a pause. Script-state freshness checks and the added tests support the requested race handling. The changelog documents the requested behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated.

Thanks @Rishaan-Saini, nice work. Both cases from #413 behave correctly in a real run. Three CodeRabbit threads are still open, though, and two of them point at small real gaps, so I'm asking for one more round before it can go into the merge queue.
Real test (engine from main, then from this branch, fresh data folders, planner/executor/fast on ollama_chat/qwen3:8b, main model claude-code/sonnet, a watch task whose check takes 30 s, changed condition, then: run):
main
this PR
Scheduled check running, task paused 3 s in
the check finished and started a run on the paused task (runs: [processing], enabled: false)
the check finished, recorded changed, no run, task active, paused
Run now on the paused task
runs
the check ran and started a run that completed (still works)
Pause 1 s after a new task starts planning
a new planner call started 6 s after the pause and the paused task got a 2-step plan (approval_pending, enabled: false)
the call in flight finished, no planner call after it, still planning with "Paused before the plan was ready. Resume the task to continue." after 75 s
Resume
the note cleared, one planner call, approval_pending with a 2-step plan
(On this branch one model job started after the pause, but it had already been waiting 10.1 s, so it was queued before the pause by the watch task's run that had just finished. It wasn't a planner call: the task still had no plan afterwards.) pytest tests/tasks gives 416 passed and ruff is clean locally. CI is green and the CLA check passes.
Please address the open threads
Planning commit while paused (Major, line 1746, also 1805): CodeRabbit is right. Between the last _planning_paused() and update_task_if_status() there are awaits (get_task, and the update itself), so a pause landing there still commits the clarification or the plan. With tasks.require_plan_approval off it would even approve() a paused task. Making the conditional update also require enabled = 1 (an extra condition in the repo method, or a variant of it) closes that in one atomic step. It's a small change.
Pause decision cached before an await (Major, line 2495): same thing on the watch side. paused is computed before _save_script_state, so a pause during that save still alerts or starts the run. Re-checking task_id in self._paused_scripts and the task's enabled right before if act and not paused: (after the save) is enough.
Early exits still notify (Minor, line 2483): a paused check that errors still sends "script_failed", and the missing-source branch still sends its notification. Please either apply the same pause check there or reply on the thread saying why you'd rather leave it. Both are fine with me.
Every thread has to be resolved (fixed, or replied to and resolved) before the merge queue will take the PR. Optional while you're in there: the second stale-settings block in _script_check repeats the first one, so a small helper would keep the two from drifting apart.
Thanks @itsskofficial . I have addressed all open review items and resolved the three CodeRabbit threads:
Atomic planning commit: Added enabled=True to update_task_if_status (AND enabled = 1), preventing paused tasks from committing plans or auto-approving if paused during awaits.
Re-checked pause after state save: Freshly re-evaluated _script_paused() after _save_script_state() before triggering runs or recovery notifications.
Suppressed early exit notifications on pause: Suppressed script_failed and missing-source notifications if the task was paused.
Helper refactor: Deduplicated the repeated stale-settings check using a helper (_stale_check).
Added 3 offline regression tests in tests/tasks/test_pause_stops_run.py. All 419 task tests pass and ruff is clean. Ready for the merge queue!

Restart planning when Resume overlaps a paused checkpoint.
If _planning_paused reads enabled=False, Resume can run while the helper awaits its note write or publication. _carry_on then sees the existing planner job and skips starting another job. The planner exits after the checkpoint, leaving the enabled task in planning without a planner job.
Coordinate Resume with planner-job exit, and test Resume before drain().

Update the Resume flow around `_planning_paused` and `_carry_on` to coordinate
with the existing planner job’s exit, ensuring a task resumed during a
paused-checkpoint write or publication starts or retains a planner job after
that checkpoint. Add a test that exercises Resume before `drain()` and verifies
planning continues with an active planner job.

Thanks @Rishaan-Saini, the planning side is solid now, and most of the watch side is too. One CodeRabbit thread is still open, and I could reproduce it on a real engine, so I'm asking for one more small round.
Re-test of c40b010 (engine from this branch, fresh data folder, planner/executor/fast on ollama_chat/qwen3:8b, tasks.require_plan_approval = false). It's plain sentient serve with one test-only change: a launcher adds a 10 s sleep at three points, so I can pause inside windows that are normally a few milliseconds wide.
Case

Pause while a watch check saves its state (sleep in _save_script_state)
the check is recorded as changed, no run, no alert, task active and paused ✅
Pause while a failing check runs (raise RuntimeError)
failed is in the check history, no "Check failed" notification ✅
Run now on the paused watch task
the check ran and started a run, which completed ✅
Resume
enabled: true, active, next check scheduled ✅
Approval off: pause while the planner's plan commit waits (sleep before update_task_if_status)
the log says the commit returned False. The task stayed planning, paused, with "Paused before the plan was ready. Resume the task to continue.", no plan, not approved, no run ✅
Resume that task
one planner call, then the commit succeeded. It was auto-approved to active with a 2-step plan, next run 09:00 IST ✅
Pause during the "working again" notification (a check whose last run had failed, sleep in _notify for script_recovered)
❌ a run started on the paused task (enabled: false, runs: ['processing'], later completed)
pytest tests/tasks gives 419 passed, and ruff is clean. CI is green and the CLA check passes.
Please fix: the open thread at service.py ~2495 (CodeRabbit's follow-up, unresolved). The last row is that thread. paused is worked out before await self._notify(... "script_recovered"), and nothing checks it again after that await. The fresh = await self.repo.get_task(...) read just before _start_run isn't checked either. A small fix is enough: check again right before acting, for example if self._script_paused(task_id, fresh, manual): skip after reading fresh (and the same for the alert branch). Or send the recovery note after the run or alert decision. A regression test that pauses during the recovery notification would pin it. Then please reply on the thread and resolve it, because the merge queue won't take the PR while it's open.
Everything else from last round checks out. Thanks for the quick turnaround and the tidy _stale_check helper!

Hi @Rishaan-Saini, I merged the latest main into your branch so it is up to date: merge commit 2ded7fb7. There was one conflict, in sentient/tasks/service.py where the planner saves the plan: main had added a check so a plan an MCP app asked for always waits for approval (#443), right where you added the pause checks. I kept both: your _planning_paused checks and enabled=True are unchanged, and the approval condition now also has main's not mcp_tasks.is_mcp_task(task). After the merge, ruff check sentient tests packaging is clean and all 457 tests in tests/tasks pass locally. You don't need to do anything for this; any earlier review points still stand where they are.
Thanks @itsskofficial! Both gaps and CodeRabbit threads are now closed:
Freshly re-evaluated _script_paused() after the recovery notification await and guarded _start_run() with if not self._script_paused(task_id, fresh, manual):.
Re-checked _stale_check() after state save to discard stale decisions if settings changed.
Checked not task.get("enabled", True) before starting refinement.
Added regression tests test_pause_during_recovery_notification_does_not_start_a_run and test_pause_before_refine_leaves_task_in_planning.
All 459 task tests pass and ruff check sentient tests packaging is clean. Ready for the merge queue

Thanks @Rishaan-Saini, that closes the last gap. The run I could reproduce last round no longer happens, and everything that passed before still passes. Approving.
Re-test of 0c55fb4 (engine from this branch, fresh data folder, planner/executor/fast on ollama_chat/qwen3:8b, chat on claude-code/sonnet, tasks.require_plan_approval = false). Pause during the "working again" notification (a check whose last run had failed, sleep in _notify for script_recovered)
✅ now fixed: the task is active, enabled: false, runs: [], and the check is recorded as changed. No model job started (the log shows none between the pause and the next case). The only notification is "Check recovered", which was already being sent when I paused. Last round this started a run.
Pause while a watch check saves its state
✅ check recorded changed, no run, no alert, task active and paused
Pause while a failing check runs (raise RuntimeError)
✅ failed is in the check history, no "Check failed" notification
Run now on the paused watch task
✅ the check ran and started a run, which completed
Resume
✅ enabled: true, active, next check scheduled
Approval off: pause while the planner's plan commit waits
✅ the commit returned False. The task stayed planning, paused, with "Paused before the plan was ready. Resume the task to continue.", no plan, not approved, no run
Resume that task
✅ the commit then succeeded, auto-approved to active with a 3-step plan, next run 09:00 IST
Chat turn on claude-code/sonnet
✅ replied "ready", done with no error
No tracebacks or errors in the engine log.
Locally:pytest tests/tasks gives 459 passed, and ruff check sentient tests packaging is clean. I also ran your new test_pause_during_recovery_notification_does_not_start_a_run against the previous service.py (2ded7fb): it fails there and passes on this commit, so it really pins the bug. CI is green and the CLA check passes.
Review threads: all 6 are resolved, and none are left open.

Closes #413
What and why
Addresses two remaining pause edge cases following #408 and #410:
Task being planned: Pausing a task while it was being planned did not stop planning within the same session (it only stopped across engine restarts via fix(tasks): a paused task stays paused when Sentient restarts #405). Now,
_planning_paused(task_id)checks before each model call (_refine,_plan_job, before/after the planner call, and before committing the plan). If paused, it halts planning and leaves the task inplanningstatus with the note"Paused before the plan was ready. Resume the task to continue."(PLAN_PAUSED_NOTE). Resuming the task clears the note and proceeds with planning.Watch check finishing on paused task: When a scheduled watch check (
task_type="script") was in flight while the task was paused, finishing the check started a new run that wasn't held. Now,_paused_scriptstracks active checks on paused tasks so in-flight checks do not start runs or send alerts, while manual "Run now" (manual=True) on a paused task continues to work. How I tested it
