Adds a Camera only mode: a take that records the camera alone, with no screen or window.
A new toggle on the recording bar, next to the source button, persisted as the cameraOnly recording preference. Turning it on also turns on the camera, through the same canTurnCameraOn check as the camera toggle, so a camera that check refuses also refuses camera only. Turning the camera off also turns camera only off.
While camera only is on, the source button, system audio and the cursor toggle are hidden, because all three belong to screen capture. Record never opens the source picker.
The take uses the browser pipeline on all three platforms. No native helper starts, no source is needed, no Linux portal is raised, and the macOS Accessibility preflight is skipped. Native code is unchanged.
The camera is recorded as the session's screenVideoPath, with no webcamVideoPath. The editor therefore treats it as the main video, so background, padding, roundness and shadow apply to it the same way they apply to a screen recording.
The recorder gets a clone of the preview's camera track. Stopping the take stops only the clone. Stopping the preview's own track would fire its onended, which reports "Webcam disconnected" and switches the camera off.
The take stores cursor mode "system" and writes no cursor telemetry, because the recording has no screen for a cursor to be on.
useScreenRecorder now has two shared helpers: captureMicrophone and beginBrowserTake (starts the clock, sets the stop and finalize listeners). The screen take and the camera-only take both use them, so the existing browser path's behavior is unchanged.
Known limitation: the camera-layer tools (background cutout, blur, crop, Full Camera) apply to the webcam layer. A camera-only take has no webcam layer, so these tools do not apply to it. Supporting them would mean changing the editor, so I left it out of this PR.
src/hooks/useScreenRecorder.cameraOnly.test.tsx: a camera-only take records the cloned camera track as the main video. It makes no native or getDisplayMedia call, saves with webcam: undefined and cursorCaptureMode: "system", and leaves the preview track running. A take with no camera reports recording.cameraOnlyNeedsCamera and records nothing.
LaunchWindow.test.tsx: the toggle turns the camera on and stores both preferences, and stays off when the camera is refused. With it on, the source, system audio and cursor controls are hidden and Record never opens the picker. Turning the camera off turns camera only off.
app-settings.test.ts: cameraOnly is persisted. A missing or invalid value reads as off, and a non-boolean write is rejected.
npx tsc --noEmit and npx tsc -p tsconfig.test.json --noEmit are clean. Biome is clean on all changed files, and npm run i18n:check passes. The new strings are translated in all 15 locales.
npm run test: 5013 passed. The only failures are 4 tests in .github/scripts/stable-release-notes.test.mjs, which fail the same way on an unmodified main on this Windows machine.
Manual, Windows 11, built app from this branch (vite build + Electron), with the real webcam and microphone
Native binaries were copied from the installed 2.1.2 Store build, as the dev-build notes in AGENTS.md describe. The HUD was driven through CDP, so these runs confirm the renderer wiring but do not test click-through reachability.
Camera only on: the camera turns on, and source, system audio and cursor disappear from the bar.
Record: no source picker appears. The countdown runs, then recording starts.
Stop: the editor opens with the camera as the main video, on the wallpaper. The timeline shows "No webcam". Padding 10% and 85% visibly resize the camera within the frame.
Saved session: a single .webm (1920×1080), no webcamVideoPath, cursorCaptureMode: "system", no .cursor.json.
With the microphone on, the take has a stereo audio track with live signal throughout (half-second RMS 0.0014 to 0.0239, with peaks where a test tone played).
Export MP4 720p: 1088×720, 7.15 s, with an audio track (peak 0.451). The exported frame shows the camera framed on the wallpaper.
Regression: with camera only off, the source, system audio and cursor controls return, and Record opens the source selector as before.
Not tested: macOS and Linux (the code path is the shared browser pipeline, but it has not been run there), and GIF export.
One observation that may be unrelated: on the first two launches the main process sat at 100% of one core and answered no IPC, so no HUD toggle worked, the plain camera toggle included. It did not reproduce on four later launches, and I could not capture a stack while it happened. This change adds only a preference field to the main process, so I suspect the borrowed 2.1.2 binaries running against main. I am mentioning it in case it matches something you have seen.
Record camera-only takes without capturing the screen. Enable the camera-only option in the recording controls; it turns on the camera and requires a working camera.
Camera-only mode hides the source, system-audio, and cursor controls. Microphone audio can still be included when enabled.
Recording is unavailable while camera activation is pending. Turning off the camera also turns off camera-only mode.
Camera-only recordings can be edited in the editor, including setting a background.
Documentation
Added guidance on camera-only recording and its editor behavior.
Adds a Camera only toggle to the recording bar. While it is on, Record
starts a take of the camera alone: no screen or window is picked, no
native capture helper starts, and no Linux portal is raised. The camera
is recorded through the browser pipeline as the take's main video, so
the editor's background, padding, roundness and shadow frame it like a
screen recording.
- The choice is persisted as the `cameraOnly` recording preference.
- Turning it on turns the camera on, and is refused when the camera
check refuses; turning the camera off leaves camera only.
- Source, system audio and cursor controls are hidden while it is on,
since all three belong to screen capture.
- The take records a clone of the camera track, so stopping it never
fires the preview track's `onended` (camera disconnected).
- The take stores cursor mode "system" and writes no cursor telemetry.

Adds a persisted camera-only recording mode. The HUD can enable the mode and hides screen-capture controls while it is active. The recorder uses a cloned camera track in the browser recording pipeline and stores the resulting take as the main video.
Adds cameraOnly to recording preferences with a false default, boolean validation, and preference loading. Camera acquisition failures clear both camera settings. Tests cover persistence, fallback behavior, and updated preference fixtures.

Adds a camera-only HUD control. Enabling it turns on the camera and persists both settings; turning off the camera clears camera-only mode. Pending activation disables Record, and stale activation does not apply the mode. The source, system-audio, and cursor controls are hidden while camera-only mode is active. Launch labels and tooltips are translated.

Records a cloned camera track through the browser pipeline, with optional microphone audio. The take uses the screen-video path and system cursor mode. IPC clears pending cursor telemetry when recording starts without editable-overlay cursor capture. Client takes disable camera-only mode. Tests cover camera-present and camera-missing cases; documentation describes the behavior and output.

Thanks for this, @MMArephinAbid! CI is green. Two CodeRabbit threads are still open before we can move on:
LaunchWindow.tsx: Record stays clickable while the camera-only activation is pending, so a screen take can start and the HUD then flips to camera-only mid-recording. Please block Record during the transition and recheck the recording state before applying the result.
useScreenRecorder.ts: when camera acquisition fails, camEnabled is cleared but a saved cameraOnly: true is restored, leaving the HUD with no source picker and a Record that always fails. Please clear both flags together.
Could you address them, or reply in the threads if you disagree?
…he camera
Two review findings on getopenscreen#1398:
- Record was clickable while camera only waited on the camera check, so a
screen take could start and the answer then switched the HUD to camera
only mid-take. Record is now disabled until the check answers, and the
answer is dropped if a take started in the meantime.
- A failed camera cleared camEnabled but left a stored cameraOnly, which
restored a HUD with no source picker and a Record that always failed.
Both flags are now cleared together wherever the camera is switched off
for the user, and a stored pair with the camera off never restores
camera only.

Prevent stale cursor telemetry from being saved with camera-only recordings.
The system-cursor contract requires no .cursor.json sidecar. A prior editable-overlay stop can complete after its save checks the shared pending buffer, leaving those samples pending. The next camera-only save can then write them to its sidecar.
Await setRecordingState(false) before saving the browser take.

A take that records no cursor (system mode, or camera only) called only
stopCursorRecording(), which returns early when no session runs and left
any samples an earlier, unsaved take had pending. store-recorded-session
then wrote them beside the new take as its .cursor.json. Clear them at
that start, as startCursorRecording already does for the editable-cursor
take. Raised in review on getopenscreen#1398.

@coderabbitai re the outside-diff finding on useScreenRecorder.ts:673-678 (stale cursor telemetry on a camera-only take): confirmed and fixed in 0a04e5e, at a different point from the one suggested.
The stale data came from the start of the take, not the stop. A take that records no cursor (camera only, or system mode) calls set-recording-state(true, …, "system"), which only ran stopCursorRecording(). That function returns early when no session runs, so it left behind any samples an earlier unsaved take had pending, and store-recorded-session then wrote them as this take's .cursor.json. That start now clears pendingCursorRecordingData, the same as startCursorRecording already does for the editable-cursor take. A camera-only take never starts a cursor session, so after this, nothing can be pending when it is saved, whatever the order of the stop IPC.
I did not await setRecordingState(false) in the finalizer. That stop-side ordering applies to every browser take, not just this feature, and changing it is outside the scope of this PR. Test: electron/ipc/recordingStateRouting.test.ts, which follows that file's syntactic convention because registerIpcHandlers needs all of Electron to run.

Persist the cleared camera preference when the camera track ends.
The onended handler clears only the local webcamEnabled and cameraOnly state. It does not write the stored camEnabled and cameraOnly values, so both remain true after the camera disconnects. The camera-acquisition failure path clears the stored values for the same loss of camera, and its comment says the stored preference must follow the HUD state.
No recording-prefs-changed event is sent from this handler. Other open windows therefore keep their earlier camera-only and camera-enabled state. A later launch restores the stored pair. The stored state clears only when the next camera acquisition fails with a non-recoverable error. A recoverable restored-identity error returns before the clearing write.
Clear the stored pair in the same branch. Keep the call inside the !restarting.current guard so a camera restart does not clear the preference:

Do not overwrite a newer recording preference snapshot.
While cameraOnlyPending is true, another renderer can publish { camEnabled: false, cameraOnly: false }. This renderer applies that snapshot, but the pending callback can then call setCameraOnly(true) and persistRecordingPrefs({ camEnabled: true, cameraOnly: true }). The callback therefore restores camera-only mode and overwrites the user's cross-window change in the durable preferences.
Invalidate the pending activation when a newer camera preference snapshot arrives, or re-check the latest snapshot immediately before these calls. This is separate from camera-track disconnect cleanup.

@MMArephinAbid Thanks for the correction. The inspected code supports your explanation.
In electron/ipc/handlers.ts, the non-editable-overlay start branch awaits stopCursorRecording() and then clears pendingCursorRecordingData. This removes earlier samples even when no cursor session is active. The regression test checks that reset and the existing reset in startCursorRecording().
This also matches the supplied cursor-lifecycle Learning. My proposed stop-side change was not needed to address stale telemetry on camera-only takes. I accept the start-side fix. No finalizer-ordering change is needed for this finding.
I inspected the source and test assertions. I did not run the tests.
📝 I couldn't check this conversation for new learnings, so no new learning was saved.

Learning: In `electron/ipc/handlers.ts`, `pendingCursorRecordingData` from a previous native Windows recording cannot be written to a later recording because `startCursorRecording()` clears the buffer before it starts an editable-overlay cursor session, and the non-editable-overlay start branch also clears the buffer. Failed-stop cleanup should still clear the buffer promptly to discard lost-take telemetry and maintain symmetry with the discard path.
Review follow-ups on getopenscreen#1398:
- An MCP client's take writes the recording prefs it needs, but not
cameraOnly, so a camera only left on in the bar recorded the camera
instead of the screen the client asked for. cameraOnly is now one of
the take prefs: off for the take, put back afterwards.
- A take started from elsewhere (MCP, or the editor's Record mode) now
drops a camera only still being switched on in the HUD, instead of
that activation writing over the take's prefs, and is no longer held
back by it. Only the user's own Record click waits.
- A camera disconnect stores camEnabled and cameraOnly as off, as a
camera that fails to open already did.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
@coderabbitai both outside-diff findings from the last review are addressed in b3e9e93.
useScreenRecorder.ts:527-533, persist on disconnect: agreed. The onended branch now stores camEnabled: false, cameraOnly: false, the same as the failed-acquisition path. It is still inside the !restarting.current guard, so a restart keeps the preference. Test: stores camera only and the camera as off when the camera disconnects.
LaunchWindow.tsx:1023-1031, newer snapshot overwritten: agreed, and it is more than hypothetical. The HUD and the editor never share the screen, so another renderer cannot write while the HUD is waiting. The main process can, though: an MCP take writes its prefs and then sends hud-auto-start-recording to the existing HUD. While looking at that path I found a related bug: TAKE_PREF_KEYS did not include cameraOnly, so a user who left camera only on would have given an MCP client a camera take instead of the screen it asked for. Fixes:
cameraOnly is now a take pref. It is set to false for a client's take and restored with the others afterwards (electron/mcp/app-recorder.ts).
An auto-start invalidates a pending camera-only activation (an activation counter checked before setCameraOnly/persistRecordingPrefs), and the pending guard no longer drops the auto-start. Only the user's own Record click waits for the camera check. Test: drops a pending camera only when a take is started from elsewhere.

- Around line 887-888: Update the external auto-start flow around
cameraOnlyActivation and setCameraOnlyPending to invalidate any pending
setWebcamEnabled(true) completion before awaiting getSelectedSource, so it
cannot enable or acquire the webcam or affect the recording handler’s webcam
state. Preserve accepted completion behavior for ordinary camera toggles.

@MMArephinAbid Thanks. The inspected source and regression test assertions support both fixes.
Camera disconnect:onended clears and persists both camEnabled and cameraOnly. The updates remain inside !restarting.current, so a restart preserves the preferences.
Pending activation: auto-start invalidates the activation counter before starting the take. The camera-check callback checks that counter before changing state or persisting preferences. Auto-start bypasses the pending guard; the user’s Record click still waits.
MCP take preferences:TAKE_PREF_KEYS includes cameraOnly. takePrefs() sets it to false, and pickTakePrefs() preserves the previous value for restoration.
The regression assertions cover disconnect persistence, auto-start during pending activation, and MCP preference selection. These changes address the two reported findings. I inspected the source and assertions; I did not run the tests.

Learning: In electron/ipc/handlers.ts, pointHudAtTake uses the persistent recordingPrefs shared with the HUD for temporary MCP recording settings. Restoration on normal cleanup and will-quit is required. Crash recovery remains an accepted limitation; do not require a separate in-memory preference source solely to handle this case.

…sewhere
An auto-start dropped a pending camera-only activation, but not the camera
check inside setWebcamEnabled(true). Answering late, it still switched the
camera on, and a take set up without a camera could record one.
setWebcamEnabled now answers false, without turning the camera on, when a
later call or cancelPendingWebcamEnable() has superseded it while the
check ran; the HUD's auto-start cancels it. A turn-on nothing supersedes
behaves as before. Raised in review on getopenscreen#1398.

Read the live camera track after microphone capture.
If the user changes cameras while captureMicrophone() waits, the preview effect stops the track read at Line 1767. Line 1782 then clones that ended track, so the take starts without camera video. An ended track remains ended when cloned. Re-read webcamStream.current after the await and reject the start unless its video track is live. (w3.org)

E2E on real macOS and Linux at head b03a836. Renderer built from the PR. Native binaries came unchanged from an existing build, since the PR touches none of them. Thanks @MMArephinAbid, this works well.
macOS 27.0.1, M1 Mac mini (OBS Virtual Camera)
Camera-only take: ✅ 10 s take → 10.08 s WebM, H.264 1920×1080 at 30 fps (298 frames) + Opus mic track. Session cursorCaptureMode: "system", no .cursor.json or webcam sidecar. The editor opens with the camera as the main clip (0:10.1) and frames it with the background.
Record gating: ✅ With camera only on, Record reads "Start recording" and the source, system-audio and cursor buttons are hidden. With no camera listed, camera only refuses to switch on and Record stays a screen take.
Persistence: ✅ Still on after a relaunch. Switching the camera off clears it too.
Screen mode: ✅ An ordinary screen take still works (10.12 s MP4).
Pending camera check + take started elsewhere (the hud-auto-start-recording path the editor and MCP use, camera check slowed to 4 s): ✅ Record is disabled while the check is pending. The screen take starts, camera only stays off, and getUserMedia is never called, so no camera comes on.
MP4 export (CLI, real pipeline): ✅ Done in 4 s: 1752×1080, 10.08 s, AAC. Decodes cleanly.
Camera-only take: ✅ 10.12 s WebM, 1280×720 (camera max), 303 frames, live mic (−31 dB mean). The editor opens on the camera clip.
Record gating, no-camera refusal, persistence: ✅ Same results as on macOS.
Pending check + auto-start: ✅ Record is disabled while pending, camera only stays off and the camera is never opened.
MP4 export: ✅ Done in 5 s: 1752×1080, 10.13 s, AAC with audio. Decodes cleanly.
Screen mode:⚠️ Not verifiable here. The portal picker was answered (Share), but no take started, and the same happens on the PR's base 2159f42. So it is a limit of my headless setup, not this PR.
Not covered
HUD clicks: sent through Playwright, so this proves the wiring, not real-pointer reachability of the new button.
No-camera case: simulated by filtering enumerateDevices. No camera was unplugged.
Mac mic: the default input is a silent virtual device, so the Mac track is present but silent.
Tray "Stop": not exercised.

Summary
Adds a Camera only mode: a take that records the camera alone, with no screen or window.
cameraOnlyrecording preference. Turning it on also turns on the camera, through the samecanTurnCameraOncheck as the camera toggle, so a camera that check refuses also refuses camera only. Turning the camera off also turns camera only off.screenVideoPath, with nowebcamVideoPath. The editor therefore treats it as the main video, so background, padding, roundness and shadow apply to it the same way they apply to a screen recording.onended, which reports "Webcam disconnected" and switches the camera off."system"and writes no cursor telemetry, because the recording has no screen for a cursor to be on.useScreenRecordernow has two shared helpers:captureMicrophoneandbeginBrowserTake(starts the clock, sets the stop and finalize listeners). The screen take and the camera-only take both use them, so the existing browser path's behavior is unchanged.Known limitation: the camera-layer tools (background cutout, blur, crop, Full Camera) apply to the webcam layer. A camera-only take has no webcam layer, so these tools do not apply to it. Supporting them would mean changing the editor, so I left it out of this PR.

Automated
src/hooks/useScreenRecorder.cameraOnly.test.tsx: a camera-only take records the cloned camera track as the main video. It makes no native orgetDisplayMediacall, saves withwebcam: undefinedandcursorCaptureMode: "system", and leaves the preview track running. A take with no camera reportsrecording.cameraOnlyNeedsCameraand records nothing.LaunchWindow.test.tsx: the toggle turns the camera on and stores both preferences, and stays off when the camera is refused. With it on, the source, system audio and cursor controls are hidden and Record never opens the picker. Turning the camera off turns camera only off.app-settings.test.ts:cameraOnlyis persisted. A missing or invalid value reads as off, and a non-boolean write is rejected.npx tsc --noEmitandnpx tsc -p tsconfig.test.json --noEmitare clean. The only failures are 4 tests in.github/scripts/stable-release-notes.test.mjs, which fail the same way on an unmodifiedmainon this Windows machine.Manual, Windows 11, built app from this branch (
vite build+ Electron), with the real webcam and microphoneNative binaries were copied from the installed 2.1.2 Store build, as the dev-build notes in AGENTS.md describe. The HUD was driven through CDP, so these runs confirm the renderer wiring but do not test click-through reachability.
.webm(1920×1080), nowebcamVideoPath, cursorCaptureMode: "system", no.cursor.json.Not tested: macOS and Linux (the code path is the shared browser pipeline, but it has not been run there), and GIF export.
One observation that may be unrelated: on the first two launches the main process sat at 100% of one core and answered no IPC, so no HUD toggle worked, the plain camera toggle included. It did not reproduce on four later launches, and I could not capture a stack while it happened. This change adds only a preference field to the main process, so I suspect the borrowed 2.1.2 binaries running against
main. I am mentioning it in case it matches something you have seen.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
