Summary

Fixes replay behavior in the editor preview when playback reaches the end of the timeline:

  • Clean timeline replay: Clicking play when stopped at or near the end of the timeline automatically restarts playback from the beginning, working reliably for full-length recordings, trimmed clips, and multi-clip timelines without stalls or button flicker.
  • Accurate transport state: Transport button state (play/pause) and playhead position stay synchronized during replay, rewinds, and end-of-timeline events.
  • Robust timeline bounds: Timeline duration and endpoint resolution accurately account for multi-clip arrangements and ignore zero-duration artifacts at the boundary.

Testing

  • Unit tests in src/components/ai-edition/VirtualPreview.playback.test.tsx:
    • Added test cases covering replay restart after a full clip ends and after a trimmed clip ends (restarts with one play event after a %s-second clip ends).
    • Added test case covering replay restart after the browser's native ended event (restarts after the browser's ended event).
    • Added test case verifying that playback is not paused while a replay seek is in flight (does not pause or cancel playback while a replay seek is in flight).
  • Unit tests in src/lib/ai-edition/timeline/virtual-preview.test.ts:
    • Added tests for non-monotonic clip ordering in totalVirtualDuration and endpoint clip resolution in locateVirtualPosition.
    • Added test for empty clips return in locateVirtualPosition.
  • Ran targeted test suites:
    • npx vitest --run src/components/ai-edition/VirtualPreview.playback.test.tsx (21 tests pass)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Playback now restarts from the beginning when you press Play at the end of the edited timeline, including timelines spanning multiple clips or assets.
    • Playback continues correctly when one clip ends and another follows, and reaches the timeline end only after the final clip.
    • Seeking during playback behaves more reliably, including when switching video sources or seeking while paused.
    • Timeline duration and end-position handling now account for clips that are out of order, including zero-length clips at the endpoint.
    • Playback handles delayed video end events more reliably.

Timeline utilities now calculate endpoints independently of clip array order. NewEditorShell and VirtualPreview handle replay from the timeline end, playback-preserving seeks, and playback updates during asset loads and clip transitions.

Changes: VirtualPreview Replay

Layer / File(s) Summary
Timeline endpoint calculation
src/lib/ai-edition/timeline/virtual-preview.ts, src/lib/ai-edition/timeline/virtual-preview.test.ts
The duration calculation returns the greatest clip end time. Position lookup assigns the inclusive endpoint to the last positive-width clip ending at that duration. Tests cover out-of-order clips and a zero-length clip at the endpoint.
Playback-preserving seek and replay entry
src/components/ai-edition/NewEditorShell.tsx, src/components/ai-edition/Preview.tsx, src/components/ai-edition/PreviewCanvas.tsx, src/components/ai-edition/NewEditorShell.togglePlay.test.tsx
Seek targets accept an optional preservePlayback flag. NewEditorShell uses timeline positions to detect replay at the endpoint and seek to zero. Tests cover replay at the endpoint and playback from an intermediate position.
VirtualPreview seek and playback handling
src/components/ai-edition/VirtualPreview.tsx, src/components/ai-edition/VirtualPreview.playback.test.tsx
VirtualPreview defers playback-position handling during seeks and loads, preserves playback across asset switches when requested, and updates virtual time at the timeline end. Tests cover replay, cross-asset seeks, and clip-boundary transitions.

The playback changes have a bounded test-coverage gap: unintended playback after a paused cross-source seek could go undetected. Adding the paused-state assertion is a small follow-up; no current playback failure is established.

bet4it marked this pull request as draft October 27, 2026 02:42
When preview playback reaches the end of the timeline, pressing play again could stall, desync, or require multiple clicks to replay because the playhead was held at or past the timeline boundary, causing the playback loop to pause immediately upon starting. When the timeline was trimmed shorter than the underlying media file, clicking play repeatedly would continually hit the trim boundary without restarting from the beginning.

1. In NewEditorShell togglePlay, when playhead is at or near the timeline end (duration - 0.05s), pre-seek the video element synchronously to the start position before calling play(), ensuring playback starts cleanly from 0 without triggering an immediate boundary pause.
2. In NewEditorShell, synchronize onPlay and onPause to !el.paused, and guard onEnded with if (!el.paused) return so in-flight playback is never falsely marked as stopped.
3. In VirtualPreview onPlay, if virtualTime is at or near virtualDuration, rewind to the beginning via seekToVirtualTime(0, true, true). In onEnded, publish the timeline duration when no next clip exists, and guard against non-paused events.
4. Derive virtual duration from maximum timelineEndSec across clips rather than array index order, and restrict timeline endpoint candidates to positive-duration clips.

Thanks for the update! The fix looks good. The one thing left is CodeRabbit's open thread on NewEditorShell.tsx: when the last clip uses a different asset than the first, the shell's handleSeek(0) could overwrite the play: true intent set by onPlay. A cross-asset replay test through togglePlay (or a fix if it fails) would close it, and then this can go in.

@EtienneLescot Thanks! Added the cross-asset replay tests and ensured playback intent is preserved through SeekTarget.preservePlayback across asset switches (in commit 3598857). All tests and typechecks pass cleanly.

Thanks @bet4it, the end-of-timeline restart works nicely. Measured on a real Mac (M1, macOS 27.0.1), main b9f9d85 vs main + this PR's two commits (they apply cleanly), driven by Playwright on a two-source project (clip A 0–15 s, clip B 15–30 s).

Fixed by this PR

  • Play at the end of the timeline: main stays stuck at 30 s; the PR restarts at 0 s and plays, switching back to source A. ✅
  • Paused seek into the other source, with a second seek while it loads: stays paused on both builds. ✅

Regression

  • Paused in B (~16–23 s), click the timeline at 14 s (A), wait 2 s, press Play.
    • main: resumes at 14 s, 6/6 runs.
    • PR: jumps back to 0 s and plays from the start, 5/6 runs. Same 1/2 when the seek happens during playback.
  • So a cross-source seek seems to leave the playhead looking "at the end" to the new rewind (togglePlay or the onPlay rewind in VirtualPreview).

Export identity and preview frame rate were not measured: they would need to be redone once this is fixed.

Thanks @bet4it for the quick rework, the paused cross-source seek is fixed now. Measured on a real Mac (M1, macOS 27.0.1), main d12d007 vs main + 9644513 + c1a0a37, same compositor addon, two-source project (A 0–15 s, B 15–30 s).

Fixed: paused in B, click at 14 s, wait 2 s, Play → resumes at 14.0 s in 12/12 runs (6 paused, 6 seeking while playing), same as main. Paused seeks across sources stay paused.

New regression: playback no longer stops at clip ends after a source switch.

  • Seek to 28.5 s (in B), Play: B keeps playing past its out-point (source 15.0 → 17.8 s after 4 s) and never stops. main stops at 14.96. Play-from-end therefore no longer restarts at 0.
  • Play from 14 s in A: A plays past 15 s (source 15.33) instead of crossing into B. main crosses into B correctly.

Likely cause: the new loadState === "loading" early return in the rAF tick. That effect only re-runs on [activeSource?.id], and the asset switch sets loading in the same render, so the tick closure keeps "loading" for the life of that source and skips every clip-boundary check. Reading it through a ref (like pendingSeekRef) should fix it; same for the onEnded guard.

Export and preview cadence not measured on this head, since the preview path will change again.

Assert playback state in the flagged playing cross-asset seek test.

The test at VirtualPreview.playback.test.tsx:1062 sets preservePlayback: true directly. Its assertions check only videoA.currentTime and the last reported time. The test title says it verifies that playback resumes, but no assertion checks videoA.paused or a play call. A regression that leaves the flagged seek paused would still pass.

Add an assertion on the paused state after the seek, for example that videoA.paused is false, and check that the flagged seek calls play.

The ordinary timeline caller omits the flag. At head, that caller pauses on an asset switch, so playing timeline seeks across sources have no coverage either. Add that case as a separate test.

Cover the preservePlayback forwarding at the Preview boundary.

The shell test mocks ./Preview, so it cannot detect a Preview change that drops the flag. No current Preview test checks a non-null seekTarget or preservePlayback. VirtualPreview.playback.test.tsx covers the resume after metadata, but it passes the flag directly to VirtualPreview.

Add a Preview test that uses the existing PreviewCanvas stub. The stub should expose the seekTarget it receives. The test should assert that a seekTarget with preservePlayback: true reaches the canvas:

 vi.mock("./PreviewCanvas", () => ({
 	PreviewCanvas: ({
 		videoSources,
 		onVideoError,
 		onVideoRecovered,
 		retryToken,
+		seekTarget,
 	}: {
 		videoSources: VideoSource[];
 		onVideoError?: (assetId: string, detail: string) => void;
 		onVideoRecovered?: (assetId: string) => void;
 		retryToken?: number;
+		seekTarget?: { timeSec: number; requestId: number; preservePlayback?: boolean } | null;
 	}) => (
 		<div
 			data-testid="preview-canvas"
 			data-sources={videoSources.map((s) => s.id).join(",")}
 			data-retry-token={retryToken}
+			data-seek-preserve-playback={String(seekTarget?.preservePlayback ?? false)}
 		>

This test closes the gap at the Preview hop with a small change. A full mount of the real Preview and PreviewCanvas would also cover the PreviewCanvas to VirtualPreview hop. That mount is heavier, because PreviewCanvas depends on the native compositor and canvas path. Use it only if that hop also needs coverage.

Check the media position in the intermediate-position replay test.

The intermediate-position test asserts the store time and the absence of a seek target. It does not assert the media element's currentTime. The Preview mock never writes currentTime, so a media rewind that leaves the store at 4 passes this test. The resume-without-rewind behavior is also asserted at the preview level in VirtualPreview.playback.test.tsx, so this gap is narrow and the suggested move is partly redundant.

To cover the gap at the shell level, capture the mocked element in the Preview mock's effect. Back its currentTime with a stored value, as the preview playback test does. Set it to 4 before pressing Space, then assert that it remains 4.

Thanks @EtienneLescot, your diagnosis was spot on!

Indeed, loadState captured in the rAF tick() closure retained "loading" across the life of the switched asset because the effect only re-runs on [activeSource?.id].

Changes made

  1. Tracked loadState via loadStateRef.current (with synchronous updates via updateLoadState), and read loadStateRef.current === "loading" in tick() and <video onEnded>.
  2. Verified against the 2-source benchmark (A: 0–15 s, B: 15–30 s) with Playwright in headless Chrome:
    • Play from 14 s in A: plays across the 15 s boundary cleanly into B, advancing smoothly.
    • Paused seek from B to 14 s in A, then Play: resumes accurately at ~14.4 s in A without jumping back to 0.
    • Seek to 28.5 s in B, then Play: plays to 30.0 s and stops cleanly at timeline end.
    • Play from 30.0 s (end of timeline): restarts playback from 0.0 s on source A as expected.
  3. Added regression unit tests in VirtualPreview.playback.test.tsx verifying that boundary advancement and timeline end checks are not blocked after asset switches.

Thanks @bet4it, this head fixes both regressions from the last two rounds. Measured on a real Mac (M1, macOS 27.0.1): main d12d007 vs main + this PR's two commits (9644513, 7004dd8). Same compositor addon for both.

Regressions from previous rounds

  • Paused in B, click at 14 s, wait 2 s, Play: resumes at 14 s, 12/12 (6 paused, 6 while playing). Same as main.
  • Seek to 28.5 s in B, Play: stops at the clip end (B 14.96 s), also after 6 source switches. Played from 13 s in A: hands off to B and stops at the end. No overrun.

The fix

  • Play at the end of the timeline restarts from 0 (A 0.7 s after 0.7 s), 4/4. main stays stuck at the end.
  • Paused cross-source seeks (two quick seeks into B, then back into A) stay paused. Same as main.

Export (MP4 1080p60, 3 reference projects, 3 interleaved runs each)

project frames differing main PR
light 0 / 1800 9.82 s 9.81 s
heavy 0 / 1800 11.54 s 11.54 s
fullcam 0 / 1800 11.58 s 11.61 s

Preview cadence (barcode probe, 6 playbacks per build, 3 interleaved sessions)

  • main: median 28.96 fps (27.48 to 29.27)
  • PR: median 28.70 fps (24.23 to 29.39), −0.9 %. The 24.23 is the very first playback of the series (cold start); the other five sit between 27.17 and 29.39.

All within ±5 %. R4 passes on this head.

Add a test that fires ended on a non-final clip.

The new boundary test reaches clip_2 only through tick(). It never fires ended, so deleting the advance in onEnded would not fail it. Add a case that pauses clip_1 at 15s, fires ended, and asserts the switch to a2 with virtual time 16.

Comment thread src/components/ai-edition/VirtualPreview.tsx
1. Pass preservePlayback through handleSeek and SeekTarget down to VirtualPreview so cross-asset replay preserves playback intent while loading the first asset.
2. In VirtualPreview rAF loop (tick()), read loadState through loadStateRef.current (gated on loadStateRef.current === "loading" and pendingSeekRef.current !== null) so in-flight seeks/loads do not evaluate stale or zero timestamps against clip boundaries, and the tick closure does not retain a stale "loading" state across asset switches.
3. In VirtualPreview seekToVirtualTime, pause the active video element immediately on paused cross-asset seeks, and ensure pendingSeekRef only carries play intent when preservePlayback is requested.
4. Restrict timeline-end fallbacks in VirtualPreview (tick() and onEnded) and rewind triggers in NewEditorShell (togglePlay) to the final clip on the timeline without following clips.
5. Add unit and regression tests in NewEditorShell.togglePlay.test.tsx and VirtualPreview.playback.test.tsx.

R4 measurement on macOS (Apple Silicon), head 1f89e4f: ok

PR = 9644513 + 1f89e4f cherry-picked on main d12d007; same compositor addon for both builds.

This commit (onEnded handled during a load)

  • Playback started in A at 12, 13, 13.5, 14, 14.5, 14.8 and 14.9 s, 13 runs: always crosses into B (B starts at 0.00 to 0.09 s), reaches the timeline end on time (−0.03 to −0.14 s vs wall clock), and stops at 14.96 s in B. No early stop, no skipped clip, no overrun. Same on main.

Earlier regressions, re-checked

  • Paused in B, click 14 s, Play: resumes at 14 s, 12/12 (6 paused, 6 while playing), same as main.
  • From 28.5 s, including after 6 source changes: stops at 14.96 s in B, 4/4. Play at the end restarts from 0 (main stays stuck at the end).
  • Play started in A passes into B and stops at the end.

Measurements

  • Export MP4 1080p60, light / heavy / fullcam, 3 interleaved runs each: 0 of 1800 frames differ from main. Export time within ±0.2 %.
  • Preview cadence, 6 interleaved playbacks per build: median 28.73 fps (PR) vs 28.60 fps (main), +0.5 %.

Thanks @bet4it!

Assert that the destination video stays paused before the simulated Play.

The paused B-to-A seek test never checks paused. The test calls videoA.play() before its assertions, so a regression that auto-resumes the seek would still pass. Add expect(videoElA.paused).toBe(true); after the metadata-load tick() and before the simulated Play.

Merged, thanks @bet4it! Replaying from the start once the timeline has ended is a nice fix, and the playback tests are very welcome.
