test(workbench): add reviewed public demo measurements - #1403
Adds a publicly committable local recording, three distinct scenario IDs and reviewed, replayable real measurements with three bound baselines for #459, reusing merged #653. This leaves #459 open.
The 16-second, 219 kB original silent browser-canvas demo includes its portable project, 402-sample cursor sidecar, capture source, MIT licence and provenance. It is explicitly public-recorded, with exact allowlisted files/hashes. Original private files, real-* IDs and missing-fixture failures remain unchanged. New material does not validate the private take or narrated speech.
The branch includes upstream main 06bd7f2e; final measurements pin clean source d1e2d9a4faf53d5a0fd77f177b01edde9c602569 and effective source hash df44d2c0e1dc96f64a24d5b396b4e1d643226a5d9868032a1e294f9ed1247898. Subsequent evidence/documentation commits leave those relevant bytes unchanged.
Changes
Adds public-demo-enhance, public-demo-zooms, public-demo-grounding, assertion-only editorial truth and negative controls for placement, scope, destructive trims, leaked labels, failed/late/same-batch reads, wrong focus and coverage/tolerance boundaries.
Extends recorded-input export only for those exact registered IDs. Existing synthetic/privacy barriers stay strict.
Prospectively fixes strict create-then-update replay with a versioned per-turn document-ID allocation ledger. Workbench builds/tests wrap the unchanged production generator; replay validates exact prefix/order/uniqueness/collisions/consumption. Model arguments and genuine wrong-ID errors are untouched. Historical missing ledgers are not invented.
Preserves last actually observed tool documents on interrupted turns while keeping them failed. Adds bounded, path-safe response diagnostics and a configurable response cap.
Binds forwarded Chat output caps and zero retries into cassette transport policy. No prompt/tool description was tuned to fit the fixture.
Keeps automatic spatial checks indeterminate where stored focus cannot measure pointer following. Adds actual production-compositor samples and hash manifests, without claiming full-trajectory certification. The inclusive 0.15 manual tolerance only absorbs floating-point subtraction rounding; 0.150001 still fails.
Actual results and adoption
Model requested/observed: deepseek-flash, provider openai-compatible; endpoint fingerprint only. Local .env.workbench and keys remain ignored. All nine agent turns completed normally; 49 agent requests and nine judge requests were recorded with complete observed usage.
IDs share prefix public-demo- and suffix -deepseek-flash-20261028-v9:

Enhancement rep1 and grounding reps1/2 genuinely miss the sustained sweep. Enhancement's indeterminate judge ends at its cap without final JSON. Zooms rep0's raw fautif is a judge false positive: the actual successful document read says hasTranscript:false, but cursor-only judge facts omitted that evidence. Its verdict/score remain unchanged; it is not presented as a demonstrated model behaviour failure. Judge facts/accuracy need further work. The judge evaluates limitation attribution, uses the same model and is distinct from the independent adoption reviewer. n=3 cannot establish small differences.
The independent agent inspected all nine actual edits/answers/tool results and judges, checked scalar usage and hashes, verified all nine native manifests and viewed twelve actual native frames. Genuine temporary rejected exports passed full strict agent-plus-judge replay before final approved receipts were issued. Final public exports then passed official CLI verify/replay/baseline and API baseline binding verification; regenerated baseline JSON matches all three committed files semantically. Failures and indeterminate counts remain bound.
Seven earlier rejected bundles remain immutable in the published evidence archive, tag wb/public-demo-459-evidence-20261028, and refuse baseline adoption. The final diff keeps only the three adopted v9 bundles, three bound baselines, review/validation records and contact sheets. Transport-failure and superseded unjudged evidence remains separately labelled in the archive; no failed request is silently turned into a pass. Legacy replay correctly refuses incompatible later source. The prospective fix is demonstrated by fresh measurements, not retroactive changes to historical signed artifacts.
Reproduce offline
Node 22.22.1, npm 10.9.4, npm ci; use this PR's pinned effective source. These commands require no provider key or upstream calls:
The runbook includes actual paid request/token/timeout caps, export steps and native-frame reproduction. Future relevant source/input changes must refuse freshness rather than bypass it.
Validation and remaining limits
App suite on current-main source: 368 files; 5,085 passed, 2 skipped.
Full Workbench: 581 passed, 66 failed, 1 skipped. 65 failures are absent original private fixtures; one unchanged editorial orphan-duration assertion expects 0.31s and observes 0.45s. Both are separate from the new fixture's results.
Three retained public-demo bundles verify/replay/bind; seven archived historical bundles verify and reject adoption. Public JSON privacy checks include configured-secret detection; native frame hashes match.
Locally rebuilt macOS arm64 native compositor produced 78 actual sample JPEGs, nine hash manifests and three contact sheets. Full native outputs remain byte-identical in the pinned archive; the current diff keeps the three contact sheets. This is sampled development rendering, not a native capture/export release smoke test or full-video review; WebM native duration warnings and platform/FFmpeg reproducibility limits are documented.
Human annotation review, narrated enhancement/speech preservation, quantitative full automatic trajectories, native/human capture, other platforms and the original private take remain unvalidated. No human or unexecuted review receipt is claimed. Known judge limitations remain visible.

Walkthrough
The Workbench adds three recorded public-demo scenarios and support for measuring, validating, and replaying them. It also records production document IDs for strict replay, adds transport limits and Chat Completions token policies, and stores measurement, review, and validation evidence.
The Workbench instruments production document-ID allocation and records validated ledgers in scenario runs and cassettes. Replay consumes those IDs in order. Failed turns retain the last observed document while remaining failed.
Transport limits and cassette behavior workbench/lib/transport.ts, workbench/lib/cassette.ts, workbench/cli.ts, workbench/lib/runner.ts, workbench/l0/chat-budget.wb.ts, workbench/l0/cli-bounds.wb.ts, workbench/l1/cassette.wb.ts, workbench/README.md
The default request-body limit increases to 128 KiB. The CLI accepts a response-byte limit. Chat Completions can apply max_tokens when an output-token limit is set; cassette identity and request evidence include that policy. Forwarding failures record classified details and phases.
Public demo fixture and scenarios workbench/public-fixtures/local-demo-v1/*, workbench/lib/public-demo.ts, workbench/scenarios/public-demo.scn.ts, workbench/scenarios/registry.ts, workbench/render-public-demo.ts, workbench/l0/public-demo.wb.ts, workbench/l1/public-demo.wb.ts, workbench/README.md
The local fixture contains a demo video, cursor sidecar, and project document. Three registered scenarios check zoom placement, activity preservation, scope, and telemetry grounding. The renderer writes sampled frames and a provenance manifest.
Public-recorded measurement support workbench/lib/measurement.ts, workbench/l1/measurements.wb.ts, workbench/README.md
Measurement generation, validation, export, and replay now accept registered public-recorded scenarios. Recorded fixtures bind the registered file roster and hashes, and replay checks the fixture input hash.
Measurement records and baselines workbench/measurements/public-demo-*/**, workbench/baselines/public-demo-*.json
The three public-demo scenarios have recorded measurement reports, per-check results, independent review records, and bound baselines. The records retain reported failures and indeterminate checks.
Validation and review evidence workbench/docs/evidence/public-demo-459/*, workbench/docs/public-demo-459.md, workbench/docs/public-demo-independent-review.md, workbench/docs/public-demo-replay-plan.md, biome.json, .gitattributes
The added evidence records validation outcomes, historical rejections, review qualifications, and archive contents. Documentation describes reproduction and remaining validation limits. Generated measurement and evidence paths are excluded from Biome’s file list and marked generated for Linguist.

Thanks for using CodeRabbit! It's free for OSS, and your support helps us grow. If you like it, consider giving us a shout-out.
Thanks for the detailed evidence, and for keeping this in draft until the replay and review gaps are closed. One small thing: GitHub parses the phrase "does not close #459" in the description as a closing keyword, so #459 is currently linked to be closed on merge (see the Development sidebar). Could you reword it (e.g. "leaves #459 open") so only "Refs #459" remains?
Thanks for catching that, @EtienneLescot! I've reworded it to “This leaves #459 open” and kept the non-closing reference. I also checked GitHub's closing-issue references: the list is now empty. The PR remains in draft while the replay and review gaps are addressed.

Give the judge the transcript state before it scores a no-transcript answer.
beh.attributes-the-limit in workbench/scenarios/public-demo.scn.ts is judged with facts: pointerReadFacts. That helper reports only getCursorTrack calls. The judge never receives the project's transcript state. When the agent correctly says the fixture has no transcript, the judge has no fact that supports the statement. The recorded v9 zooms review retains one such verdict as a judge false positive that lowers the observed score. Include the transcript state in the judged facts for the public-demo scenarios, then re-measure the baseline before binding it.

The recorded canvas already paints a yellow pointer, while the separate sidecar supplies visible pointer samples; a compositor that also paints the sidecar cursor may produce two pointers or a doubled pointer image.
Rendered demo frames may show a duplicated or offset cursor and misrepresent the visual quality of zooms.
This can occur when: Native preview or export renders this WebM with its adjacent cursor sidecar enabled, particularly while the pointer moves.

Gate annotation image paths in the public-demo renderer.
workbench/render-public-demo.ts rejects non-public image backgrounds, but it does not apply the same check to annotation imagePath values. A schema-valid document with an image annotation that points at a local file reaches renderFrames. The addon then loads that file, and render.json does not record it in publicAssets. Add the same public-prefix check used for backgrounds to each annotation imagePath in resolvedScene. Allow data: URIs only if they are intended inputs. Otherwise, throw before rendering.

Minor · Add a test that passes --max-response-bytes through the CLI. · cli-bounds.wb.ts:4-10
Add a test that passes --max-response-bytes through the CLI.
The new parseArgs test covers parsing only. No inspected test passes --max-response-bytes through run or judge and checks the transport limit. The subprocess test in workbench/l1/responses-cli.wb.ts runs the bundled CLI, but it does not pass the flag. Removing either maxResponseBytes spread in commandRun or commandJudge leaves the inspected tests passing, and an explicit bound is silently ignored. The repository requirement to test every new behavior covers this forwarding.
Add coverage that runs the run path with --max-response-bytes and asserts that the value reaches the transport limits. This can use a transport stub with commandRun, or a subprocess test that observes the limit.

Add a test for the canonical documentIds write in runScenarioReps.
workbench/lib/runner.ts:262 writes documentIds into the canonical cassette. AGENTS.md:78 requires a test for every new behavior in the same package. No test reaches this line. The strict replay test in workbench/l1/document-ids.wb.ts:87-90 writes documentIds itself and never calls runScenarioReps. Removing the line leaves the current test outcomes unchanged.
Without this write, a CLI --record cassette has no ledger. Replay then runs without replayDocumentIds (workbench/cli.ts:422), and replay results can differ from the recording without any test failing.
The live path requires requireLiveEnv() and startLiveEndpoint(...) (workbench/lib/runner.ts:198-200, 233-240). The test needs a seam that supplies a substitute endpoint and a live.record callback that returns a temporary file. It should then assert that the canonical cassette contains documentIds.

Summary
Adds a publicly committable local recording, three distinct scenario IDs and reviewed, replayable real measurements with three bound baselines for #459, reusing merged #653. This leaves #459 open.
The 16-second, 219 kB original silent browser-canvas demo includes its portable project, 402-sample cursor sidecar, capture source, MIT licence and provenance. It is explicitly
public-recorded, with exact allowlisted files/hashes. Original private files,real-*IDs and missing-fixture failures remain unchanged. New material does not validate the private take or narrated speech. The branch includes upstream main
06bd7f2e; final measurements pin clean sourced1e2d9a4faf53d5a0fd77f177b01edde9c602569and effective source hashdf44d2c0e1dc96f64a24d5b396b4e1d643226a5d9868032a1e294f9ed1247898. Subsequent evidence/documentation commits leave those relevant bytes unchanged.Changes
public-demo-enhance,public-demo-zooms,public-demo-grounding, assertion-only editorial truth and negative controls for placement, scope, destructive trims, leaked labels, failed/late/same-batch reads, wrong focus and coverage/tolerance boundaries.Actual results and adoption
Model requested/observed:
deepseek-flash, provideropenai-compatible; endpoint fingerprint only. Local.env.workbenchand keys remain ignored. All nine agent turns completed normally; 49 agent requests and nine judge requests were recorded with complete observed usage.IDs share prefix
public-demo-and suffix-deepseek-flash-20261028-v9:enhancegroundingzoomsEnhancement rep1 and grounding reps1/2 genuinely miss the sustained sweep. Enhancement's indeterminate judge ends at its cap without final JSON. Zooms rep0's raw
fautifis a judge false positive: the actual successful document read sayshasTranscript:false, but cursor-only judge facts omitted that evidence.
Runbook, actual results and limits, independent review, executed lifecycle validation.
Seven earlier rejected bundles remain immutable in the published evidence archive, tag
wb/public-demo-459-evidence-20261028, and refuse baseline adoption. The prospective fix is demonstrated by fresh measurements, not retroactive changes to historical signed artifacts.Reproduce offline
Node 22.22.1, npm 10.9.4,
npm ci; use this PR's pinned effective source. These commands require no provider key or upstream calls:The runbook includes actual paid request/token/timeout caps, export steps and native-frame reproduction. Future relevant source/input changes must refuse freshness rather than bypass it.
Validation and remaining limits
Human annotation review, narrated enhancement/speech preservation, quantitative full automatic trajectories, native/human capture, other platforms and the original private take remain unvalidated. No human or unexecuted review receipt is claimed. Known judge limitations remain visible.
