fix(export): bound a clip by the container duration, not a one-frame video stream - #1418
A static screen capture can hold a single video frame in a file whose audio and container run longer. The export clamped each clip to the video stream duration, so such a clip was cut to one frame, or dropped silently when it started after the frame length.
Take the longer of the stream and container durations; the decoder already holds the last frame to the end of the clip window.

Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Improved media duration reporting across supported platforms by accounting for both the video stream and the container. Playback timelines can reflect the longer valid duration when the two differ.
A valid duration is still reported when the other source is unavailable or unknown. When neither source provides a valid duration, no duration is reported.
Improved clip-start seeking for screen recordings by allowing playback to use a nearby prior frame when available. Webcam seeking retains its existing tolerance.
…video stream
A static screen capture can hold a single video frame (duration 0.067s) in a file whose audio and container run 87s. The export clamped each clip to the video stream duration, so such a clip was cut to one frame, or dropped silently when it started after 0.067s.
Take the longer of the stream and container durations; the decoder already holds the last frame to the end of the clip window.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The decoders now combine video-stream and container durations when reporting available duration. Clip-start seeking applies hold limits based on source type and known screen duration.

Summary
Container duration access and selection crates/compositor/shim.c, crates/compositor/src/ffi.rs, crates/compositor/src/timeline_walk.rs
The FFI exposes container duration in microseconds. cover_container_duration selects the greater valid duration, or the available valid duration. Tests cover duration selection.
Linux, macOS, and Windows decoders pass stream and container durations to cover_container_duration. The Windows stream-duration calculation retains its frame-count fallback.
Clip-start seeking accepts a prior frame within the supplied hold limit. Screen seeking uses an unbounded hold limit when the known screen duration covers the clip start. Webcam seeking uses the camera tolerance or the screen fallback’s hold limit.
The duration and seeking changes have no established production blocker. Add coverage for selecting the extended screen hold to protect late-start exports from regression.

Measured on macOS (M1) and Linux (Ubuntu 24.04), addon built from this head (8d189ad) and from its base main (d12d0071c), same app JS, CLI export 1080p60.
No regression
Reference projects (Mac bench-light / bench-heavy, Linux full-demo): every export pixel-identical to main (framemd5, 1800 / 1800 / 3600 frames).
Export time: Mac light 9.86 s vs 9.87 s, heavy 11.65 s vs 11.67 s; Linux 28.08 s vs 27.88 s. All within 1 %.
Video 10.0 s + audio 10.3 s, clip 0–10.3 s: main stopped at 10.0 s (the "clip shortened by 0.300s" warning). The head exports 10.3 s, holding the last frame for 18 frames (PSNR 53 dB against frame 599) with the audio tail intact. The first 600 frames are identical to main. This is the intended change.
The bug: one video frame + 20 s of audio
Clip 0–20 s: main exported 0.066 s (4 frames). The head exports 20.0 s, 1200 frames, holding the single frame (PSNR ≥ 49 dB from frame 0 to frame 1199, audio present to the end). Same result on both OSes.
Clip 5–15 s (starts after the only frame): still fails on the head, on both OSes. Main fails with "No video frames were exported". The head now fails with "Cannot export clip 1: the screen video has no readable frame at the clip's start". seek_clip_start (timeline_walk.rs:296) still rejects a held frame older than CLIP_START_TAIL_TOLERANCE_SEC, even when the container covers the clip. So the "or dropped if it started after" half of the fix is not there yet.
Thanks a lot @dropafterfree for tracking this down without a local build. The main case works as described.
A static screen capture with one video frame at 0s and a container covering 20s exported clip 0-20s since the previous commit, but clip 5-15s still failed with "the screen video has no readable frame at the clip's start": seek_clip_start refused a last frame older than the 0.5s tail tolerance.
When the screen container covers the clip start, hold the last frame without bound. The clip end is already clamped to that duration. The camera keeps the 0.5s margin, and a distant future frame still goes through the first-frame check.

Test the screen hold-tail selection directly.

Test the screen hold-tail selection directly.
The screen hold-tail choice at crates/compositor/src/timeline_walk.rs:471-475 has no direct test. The new unit tests call accepts_clip_start with an explicit limit, so they do not exercise the selection. If the call site passed CLIP_START_TAIL_TOLERANCE_SEC instead, the unit tests would still pass. The late-start case would then fail: accepts_clip_start(0.0, 5.0, 0.5) returns Some(false), and the export bails.
Move the selection into a helper and test its branches:
Suggested fix
- let screen_hold_tail = if screen_available_duration.is_some_and(|d| d > clip.source_start_sec) {- f64::INFINITY- } else {- CLIP_START_TAIL_TOLERANCE_SEC- };+ let screen_hold_tail = screen_hold_tail_sec(screen_available_duration, clip.source_start_sec);
Add this helper beside accepts_clip_start:
+/// Hold limit for a screen clip start: unbounded when the container covers the start.+fn screen_hold_tail_sec(available_sec: Option<f64>, source_start_sec: f64) -> f64 {+ if available_sec.is_some_and(|d| d > source_start_sec) {+ f64::INFINITY+ } else {+ CLIP_START_TAIL_TOLERANCE_SEC+ }+}
Import the helper in the test module and add the test:
The helper test pins the selection rule. It does not detect a call site that bypasses the helper. Only an export-level case can detect that. The existing tests/export_timing.rs cases are compiled only when target_os is not linux, skip unless OPENSCREEN_TEST_MEDIA is set, and have no one-frame screen fixture.
AGENTS.md requires "a test for every new behavior in the same package as the code under test." The screen hold-tail selection is new behavior, and no unit test exercises it.

Extract the screen hold-tail selection from the timeline walk into a
`screen_hold_tail_sec` helper and use that helper at the existing selection
point. Add unit tests for a container covering the clip start, one that does
not, and `None`, verifying the unbounded limit only in the covering case.

CI failed in main merge while I don't have GPU code modification @EtienneLescot would you mind re-running the job and test the new head for the bug fix, please?
Re-measured on macOS (M1), addon built from this head (84858e3, i.e. 12e7b75 + main) and from its base main (23f6109), same app JS, CLI export 1080p60. Linux was not re-run: the Linux test machine is offline. The new commit only touches the shared timeline_walk.rs, and the Linux decoder change was already measured on 8d189ad.
The bug: one video frame + 20 s of audio
Clip 5–15 s: fixed. Main fails ("No video frames were exported"). The head exports 10.0 s, 600 frames, holding the single frame (PSNR 49.8 dB frame 0 vs frame 599; frame 0 identical to the 0–20 s export), audio present to the end (−18.3 dB mean in the last 0.5 s).
Clip 0–20 s: still good. Main 0.066 s; the head 20.0 s, 1200 frames, audio to the end.
Truncated camera still refused
Screen 20 s + camera 10 s, clip 12–18 s: main and head fail with the same error, "the camera video ends before this clip starts".
No regression
bench-light / bench-heavy: all 6 exports per side pixel-identical to main (framemd5, 1800 frames).
Export time (median of 3): light 9.79 s vs 9.76 s, heavy 11.52 s vs 11.53 s. Within 0.3 %.
Video 10.0 s + audio 10.3 s: same as before. First 600 frames identical to main, then the last frame held to 10.3 s (PSNR 52.7 dB), audio tail intact.
cargo test -p openscreen-compositor: 492 passed on the head (486 on main, +6 new). The 14 bindgen doctest failures in ffi.rs are the same on main.
Thanks again @dropafterfree, the late-clip case now works as described.
