☭ Values

unifi-map is a socialist free-software project. It exists to put useful technical means in the hands of the people who use them, rather than create private leverage over them.

The hammer and sickle marks this commitment to worker ownership, solidarity, and the public good. It is not a condition of use or contribution.

What that means here

  • The project is AGPL-3.0-only. People can use, study, modify, and share it. A modified version distributed to others, including through a network service, must make its corresponding source available under the same license.
  • There will be no proprietary edition, feature-gated "open core", mandatory account, telemetry business model, or private sponsor channel that controls the public roadmap.
  • The project is local-first. It does not require a cloud relay, and it does not send network data to a service this project operates.
  • Everyone may use or contribute to the project. No political identity, affiliation, or vocabulary is required.

Governance

Today, the project has one maintainer. If a sustained, good-faith contributor collective forms, governance should become collective and public: decisions, their rationale, and the people who make them should be visible to the community.

Participation in governance requires commitment to these values in practice. That means you reject attempts to privatize, capture, or exploit the project, and you treat other participants with respect. Disagreement about technical design or politics is welcome. Harassment, discrimination, sabotage, and bad-faith obstruction are not.

This is an intention to build real collective governance when there is a collective to govern with, not a promise of a paper bureaucracy in advance.
