Overview

The main reason to have PlexConnect installed in a jailbroken ATV was to have a portable device that could access Plex servers remotely. But when Plex implemented TLS 1.1 this capability vanished because the python version that can be installed in the ATV does not support TLS 1.1.

Therefore, if PlexConnect is installed in a jailbroken ATV, its capabilities are less powerfull than having PlexConnect installed elsewhere.

But if you still want to install PlexConnect in a jailbroken ATV please note that:

• You cannot login in your Plex account, therefore you can only access your local Plex server, and without any of the Plex pass features
• python for ATV does not include PIL/pillow, therefore you can't use fanart
• the ATV can become unstable and need frequent restarts

Installing PlexConnect in ATV's should be done only when you can't install it on the computer running Plex server.

Install PlexConnect in the ATV

Login and install some prerequisites:

apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install python
apt-get install git (this no longer works. Use filezilla instead)
reboot

Login to install PlexConnect:

cd /Applications/
git clone https://github.com/iBaa/PlexConnect.git (this no longer works. Use filezilla instead)
cd PlexConnect/support/aTV_jailbreak/
./inst_atv3.sh
reboot

Then it's time to install certificates. If certificates are not properly loaded you will see a 'no available' message when trying to access Plex. Apple removed the trailers app which was intercepted by PlexConnect in the past, and is still parametrized as the default. Use another app instead.

You have to authorize the ip used by the ATV to access Plex Media Server as explained here.

A note about certificates

You need to generate your own certs. Here is an example:

openssl req -new -nodes -newkey rsa:2048 -out iMovie.pem -keyout iMovie.key -x509 -days 7300 -subj "/C=US/CN=www.icloud.com" -config /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf
openssl x509 -in iMovie.pem -outform der -out iMovie.cer
cat iMovie.key >> iMovie.pem

Do not use the ATV to generate certificates. They will not work.

How to update PlexConnect

Login the ATV and give following commands:

cd /Applications/PlexConnect/
launchctl unload /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.plex.plexconnect.bash.plist
git pull
launchctl load /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.plex.plexconnect.bash.plist
