Backtrail is a live system: each release is a new ISO, and fixes ship in a new release rather than as updates to a running system.
| Version | Supported |
|---|---|
| Latest 5.x release | Yes |
| Earlier releases | No; use the latest release |
| Redo Rescue (any version) | No; Redo Rescue is no longer maintained |
The 32-bit system is based on Debian 12 and can receive security fixes only until Debian 12 LTS ends (expected mid-2028).
Each release file has a signed build provenance attestation. With the GitHub CLI, check that an ISO was built by this repository's release workflow:
gh attestation verify backtrail-5.0.2.iso --repo johnhsb/backtrail
Please report vulnerabilities privately through GitHub: Report a vulnerability (Security tab → "Report a vulnerability"). Do not open a public issue.
Include the Backtrail version (shown on the boot menu), whether the 64-bit or 32-bit system was running, and the steps to reproduce. You should receive a reply within 7 days. Once a fix is released, the advisory is published with credit to the reporter unless you ask otherwise.
Vulnerabilities in Debian packages included in the image (the kernel, PHP, nginx, WebKitGTK and others) should also be reported to Debian; Backtrail picks up their fixes in the next release.
Backtrail is meant to run for a short time on a machine you control, on a network you trust. It needs full access to the disks, so:
- The desktop logs in automatically as
root. Therootpassword isredo, as documented in the README, for logging in at the machine. - SSH is off until
/root/enable-sshis run from the desktop. It sets a new random root password, so the documented one does not work over the network, and shows the host key fingerprints to compare with the client. - The VNC server for remote assistance is off until "Allow remote assistance" is pressed in the app bar. It then gets a new random 8-character password, shown in the app bar, and stops again with the button next to it. VNC sends its traffic unencrypted.
- The backup and restore app's PHP backend runs as
rootand has no login. nginx serves it only on the loopback address (127.0.0.1:80), so it can be used only from the machine itself, or through VNC. nginx also refuses other host names and backend requests that are not the app's own (X-Requested-With), so web pages cannot drive it. - The web browser (
backtrail-browser) and the app window run as the unprivilegedredouser, which has no password and no sudo rights. The browser keeps no data after it closes and blocks every request to this machine's loopback addresses. - The firewall (IPv4 and IPv6) drops incoming connections except SSH (22) and VNC (5900).
Run Backtrail on a network you trust, or disconnect the network cable when you back up to a local disk.
