Pay for a [Non standard] Zulip Plan ?

As a followup to #153, I think we should talk with zulip sales and consider paying at least a small amount as it seem successful, plus it's a python project.

I am not suggesting a specific plan as there is nothing on the website listed between Free and 8/user/month (business), which is of course unsustainable for us.

I would either suggest a Flat Fee, or go with paying per (admin|moderators)/month - which incentivize us to also do some audit of zulip permissions.

I'm happy to pay them. That said, I think our voice is more useful to them than our $$. Could I suggest that we find a way to prominently give them thanks or recognition? It might be simpler than spending money and I think it'd help them more - Jupyter has a big platform and Zulip's company ethos aligns nicely with our values, I think

We can ask @timabbott about what is most useful for an open source project with some resources to do. I know Tim is very eager to help open source projects, and Zulip's generosity in the open source space shows its values.

Us doubling down on Zulip and doing a bit of a media blitz to get more Jupyter people on our Zulip channel sounds like a win-win. Anecdotally, one huge thing Slack has going for it is that it seems that everyone is on slack - the network effects are very real. Bringing in hundreds to thousands of users from all different orgs onto zulip, i.e., getting them to install the zulip app or interact with zulip on a weekly basis helps both of us (though maybe these kinds of numbers are just rounding errors for Zulip?)

Using your reach to spread the word about Zulip would be a huge help for us. When we chat with folks at OSS projects about why they're on Discord, a common answer is "because that's what everyone uses", and we'd love to shift that perception. And many of our business customers first learned about Zulip because someone on the team used it in an open-source community.

My understanding from recent emails is that individually you can

• Go to Zulip’s listing as a Discord alternative on AlternativeTo.
• Sign in or make an account.
• Add your 🩷 like.
• Mark Zulip as a 👍 good alternative to Discord.
• Post a comment/review about your experience with Zulip.

You could also follow the same process on the comparison pages for Slack or Microsoft Teams.
