Multithreading and multitasking are related—but they are not interchangeable.
Here is the mental model that finally made the difference clear for me:
🔹 Multitasking traditionally means the OS making progress on multiple processes—through time-slicing, parallel execution, or both. 🔹 In application code, “tasks” are logical units of work. A task does not automatically mean a new thread. 🔹 Multithreading means work actually executes on multiple threads, and it is most useful for parallel CPU-bound work.
Put another way: concurrency means dealing with many things at once; parallelism means doing many things at the same instant.
If an order service is waiting for inventory, payment, and shipping APIs, the goal is to overlap the waits. In C#, async/await and Task.WhenAll do that without holding a worker thread for every wait. In Java 21, virtual threads let us keep straightforward blocking-style code while the JVM efficiently schedules many logical tasks.
If the same service is doing a CPU-heavy fraud calculation, the strategy changes: partition the calculation across a sensible number of platform threads so multiple CPU cores can work in parallel.
One more source of confusion: CancellationToken.
A CancellationToken does not kill a task or thread. It carries a cooperative request to stop. The running code must observe that request, stop at a safe point, and propagate the cancelled outcome. Java's Future.cancel(true) and interruption follow the same broad principle: request, observe, stop safely.
