Historical Ignored Classifications — Re-audit Required

This file preserves the reasons that 67 of the 153 physical directories in /rv/tmp/XNAGameStudio/Samples were previously excluded. It is no longer an exclusion list or source of truth. The authoritative plan.md assigns every directory an individual fresh audit (SAMPLE-001SAMPLE-153), including every entry below. No row may be rejected merely because it appears here, and earlier phrases such as “never”, “permanently out of scope” or “redundant” are historical decisions that must be re-examined from the files.

The old classifications were:

  • Not an XNA 4.0 sample at all (older XNA 2.0/3.0/3.1 archive, Silverlight/WP7 native code, art-only asset pack, third-party community kit, etc.) — outside this repo's stated scope of porting the XNA Game Studio 4.0 collection.
  • Not a runnable Game (a WinForms design-time tool, a content-pipeline extension with no executable, a font/asset/documentation-only directory).
  • Redundant — a "training kit" exercise variant of a game this repo has already ported in its normal form (e.g. HoneycombRushTrainingKit vs. the already-ported HoneycombRush), or a duplicate phone/VB/Mango variant of a sample already listed elsewhere in plan.md.
  • Tied to a platform/service CNA (a desktop C++ game framework) will never provide: WinForms hosting, Windows Phone OS APIs (push notifications, phone media library, phone GPS), the Xbox LIVE Avatar body/animation content system, or a third-party web API (Bing Maps).

When an audit closes, retain useful evidence here only as history and record the current outcome in plan.md. A large tool, platform-service or non-XNA-4 scope decision must go through that plan's owner decision queue.

Not XNA 4.0 (out of this repo's stated scope)

XNA 2.0 / 3.0 / 3.1 archive samples

Not a runnable Game (tool / library / content-pipeline-only, even within XNA 4.0)

# Name Source Directory Reason
004 StockEffects StockEffectsSample_4_0 Ships an effect-source + CLI compiler, no runnable Game
090 BitmapFontMaker BitmapFontMaker_4_0 Fresh 2026-09-01 audit: it is indeed a standalone WinForms design-time tool, but that is now measured rather than dismissed. The unchanged .NET 2 project builds and its UI/export dialog run; its defining output is a GDI+-rasterized magenta-marker BMP for XNA's FontTextureProcessor. Sharp Runtime lacks WinForms/System.Drawing, CNA lacks the matching marker-BMP font importer, and browser scope is undecided. It is 🛑 under SAMPLES-DEC-002/005; see samples/BitmapFontMaker/missing.md.
092 ContentManifestExtensions ContentManifestExtensions_4_0 Content-pipeline extension only, no executable
093 CurveEditor CurveEditor_4_0 WinForms animation-curve editing tool, not a Game
097 MemoryMadnessLab MemoryMadnessLab_4_0 WP7 "Multi-touch Game Development" teaching lab + accompanying Word doc, not a standalone runnable sample

111 XnaGraphicsProfileChecker XnaGraphicsProfileChecker_4_0 WinForms diagnostic tool, not a Game

Redundant "training kit" duplicates of an already-ported sample

# Name Source Directory Reason
064 HoneycombRushTrainingKit HoneycombRushTrainingKit_4_0 Multi-exercise teaching variant (Sources/Starter, Ex1, Ex2) of the already-ported HoneycombRush (#063) — not one clean sample, just exercises building toward the same game
068 CatapultWarsTrainingKit CatapultWarsTrainingKit_4_0 Multi-exercise teaching variant (Exercises/Ex1Ex6, Advanced) of the already-ported CatapultWars (#067)

Would only ever demonstrate an empty stub

# Name Source Directory Reason
075 NGSMSample NGSMSample_4_0 ~1900 of its ~2900 lines are Xbox LIVE lobby/session/gamer-profile networking (item 17 in DEFERRED.md); even once that exists, the sample's own "Single Player" path is an intentionally empty GameplayScreen stub per the original's own documentation ("there is no actual game code included here") — porting it would only ever produce a hollow lobby demo, never real gameplay

Tied to a platform/service CNA will never provide

# Name Source Directory Reason
085 AvatarAnimationBlending AvatarAnimationBlendingSample_4_0 Historical note: the 2026-07-10 owner go/no-go rejected CNA's opt-in substitute Avatar visual as insufficiently faithful. The fresh 2026-09-01 source/build/live-API audit is authoritative for the current campaign: the unchanged Xbox-only original builds, the normal CNA XNA route is intentionally unavailable/no-op, and the CNAEXT route is explicitly not the proprietary body. The row is therefore 🛑 under SAMPLES-DEC-004, with exact evidence and resume options in samples/AvatarAnimationBlending/missing.md; this legacy file does not independently turn that history into a new current-plan completion ruling.
086 AvatarMultipleAnimations AvatarMultipleAnimationsSample_4_0 Historical grouping under #085 is not a current audit result. The fresh 2026-09-01 audit proves this is a distinct 392-line lesson that composes Celebrate and Wave over different parts of the authentic 71-bone hierarchy; exact source and XNB build, but normal CNA presets/rendering remain zero/unavailable and the substitute extension cannot consume the composed transform list. It is now 🛑 under SAMPLES-DEC-004; see samples/AvatarMultipleAnimations/missing.md.
087 AvatarShadows AvatarShadows_4_0 Historical grouping under #085 is incomplete. The fresh 2026-09-01 audit proves a distinct four-unit planar-shadow sample whose exact shader/texture/font XNBs build: 16 bodies are flattened into an Alpha8 render target and composited on the ground. Normal CNA Avatars draw nothing, and real OPENGLES3 evidence independently shows EasyGL lacks truthful Alpha8 targets. It is now 🛑 under SAMPLES-DEC-004; see samples/AvatarShadows/missing.md.
094 CustomAvatarAnimation CustomAvatarAnimation_4_0 Same Xbox LIVE Avatar system dependency as #085 — same permanent-skip decision applies
101 ObjectPlacementOnAvatar ObjectPlacementOnAvatarSample_4_0 Historical grouping under #085 hid a distinct 361-line moving-bone attachment lesson. The fresh 2026-09-01 audit proves the unchanged Xbox source and stock baseball-bat XNB build; the product composes all 71 animation/bind/parent matrices and attaches the model to SpecialRight, but normal CNA has no ready body, bind pose or preset data and its extension uses a substitute skeleton. It is 🛑 under SAMPLES-DEC-004; see samples/ObjectPlacementOnAvatar/missing.md.
088 BingMaps BingMaps_4_0 Fresh 2026-09-01 correction: this is not a Silverlight/AJAX-control sample. It is a 1,452-line XNA Phone client using Bing Maps REST imagery and Locations endpoints, a 5x5 asynchronous in-memory tile plane and an intentional compile-time key guard. Exact content/support code builds, but free Bing Basic accounts are retired, Enterprise sunsets in 2028, and Sharp Runtime lacks the reusable async HTTP/GeoCoordinate surface. It is now 🛑 under SAMPLES-DEC-004; see samples/BingMaps/missing.md.
089 BingMapsPathFinding BingMapsPathFinding_4_0 Fresh 2026-09-01 correction: not a duplicate of #088. It is a distinct 2,612-line Phone route game with ordered pushpins, Driving/Walking REST Routes, returned-road traversal, tank motion and indexed route rendering. Five exact XNBs and eight support units build, but the intentional key guard, retired free Bing service, reusable HTTP/GeoCoordinate/XML gaps and current Azure POST/GeoJSON migration make it 🛑 under SAMPLES-DEC-004; see samples/BingMapsPathFinding/missing.md.
095 GeolocationSample GeolocationSample_4_0 Real phone GPS hardware; unlike the accelerometer (SDL_Sensor covers that generically, see AccelerometerSample below), SDL has no portable geolocation API to build on
096 InvitesSample InvitesSample_4_0 Xbox LIVE friends/invite/presence system — tied to a real Xbox LIVE account, not just LAN NetworkSession discovery (contrast with ClientServerSample/NetworkPrediction/PeerToPeer, which are future candidates — see plan.md)
105 PushNotifications PushNotificationsSample_4_0 Windows Phone push notification service; no desktop analog
106 SavingEmbeddedImages SavingEmbeddedImages_4_0 Windows Phone media library API; no desktop analog
110 WP7MusicManagement WP7MusicManagement_4_0 Windows Phone 7 media-library management API; no desktop analog (contrast with the already-ported SoundAndMusic/Audio3D, which use the portable SoundEffect/Song APIs)
