Implementation Summary: Maximal Compression Feature

Overview

Successfully implemented a maximal compression feature for Prolog to Starlog conversion that automatically nests expressions to create more concise, readable code.

What Was Done

1. Core Implementation

File: starlog.pl

New Predicates:

  • compress_starlog/2 - Main entry point for compression
  • compress_goals_iterative/2 - Iteratively applies compression
  • compress_one_pass/3 - Performs one compression pass
  • compress_one_pass_helper/4 - Helper for single pass
  • try_nest_goal/3 - Attempts to nest a goal into later goals
  • count_var_uses/3 - Counts variable usage
  • find_and_replace_use/3 - Finds and replaces variable usage
  • uses_var_as_input/2 - Checks if goal uses variable as input
  • is_output_of_goal/2 - Checks if variable is output of goal
  • contains_var/2 - Checks if term contains variable
  • is_control_structure/1 - Identifies control structures
  • is_control_goal/1 - Identifies control goals
  • substitute_term/4 - Substitutes variables in terms

Extended API:

  • starlog_output_code/3 - Added Options parameter
  • starlog_output_file/3 - Added Options parameter
  • Updated internal predicates to support compression option

2. Algorithm Design

Key Features:

  1. Iterative Compression: Applies nesting repeatedly until stable
  2. Single-Use Detection: Only nests variables used exactly once
  3. Multi-Use Preservation: Variables used multiple times remain separate
  4. Control Structure Exclusion: Skips if-then, or, not, cut
  5. Circular Reference Prevention: Avoids creating invalid references

Example Transformations:

% Before compression
A is "hello":" ",B is A:"world",C is B:"!"

% After compression  
A is "hello":" ":"world":"!"

3. Testing

New Test Files:

  • tests/test_compression.pl - 8 comprehensive tests for goal compression
  • tests/test_file_compression.pl - 3 tests for file-level compression
  • tests/sample_for_compression.pl - Sample file for testing

Test Coverage:

  • ✅ Simple nesting
  • ✅ List operations
  • ✅ Multiple variable uses (no nesting)
  • ✅ Multi-level nesting
  • ✅ Default behavior (no compression)
  • ✅ Long chains
  • ✅ Mixed operations
  • ✅ Atom concatenation

  • ✅ Backward compatibility

4. Documentation

Updated Files:

  • README.md - Added "Maximal Compression" section with examples
  • COMPRESSION_FEATURE.md - Comprehensive feature documentation

  • Benefits and use cases
  • Future enhancement ideas

5. Code Quality

Addressed:

  • Added module-level overview comments
  • Improved inline documentation
  • Clarified variable substitution logic
  • Fixed quote handling in examples
  • All existing tests still pass

Performance Characteristics

Time Complexity: O(n²) where n is the number of goals

  • One pass: O(n) to process goals
  • Iteration: Worst case O(n) passes for deeply nested expressions
  • Variable usage counting: O(n) per goal

Space Complexity: O(n)

  • Stores list of goals during processing
  • No additional significant space overhead

Backward Compatibility

Fully Backward Compatible

  • Compression is opt-in via compress(true) option
  • Default behavior unchanged
  • All existing code continues to work
  • No breaking changes to API

Usage Examples

Basic Usage

% With compression

% Without compression (default)
?- starlog_output_code((string_concat("hello"," ",T1),

File Compression

% Compress entire file
?- starlog_output_file('input.pl', user_output, [compress(true)]).

% Write to file
?- open('output.pl', write, Stream),
   starlog_output_file('input.pl', Stream, [compress(true)]),
   close(Stream).

Test Results

All tests passing:

test_basic.pl                    ✅ 6/6 tests passed

Total: 39/39 tests passing

Benefits

  1. More Concise Code: Eliminates unnecessary intermediate variables
  2. Better Readability: Nested expressions easier to understand
  3. Functional Style: Makes Starlog look more functional
  4. Opt-in Feature: Users choose when to apply compression
  5. Flexible: Works at both goal and file level

Future Enhancements

Potential improvements for future versions:

  1. Configurable nesting depth limit
  2. Smart heuristics for when to nest vs. preserve variables
  3. User-defined nesting rules
  4. Pretty-printing with line wrapping
  5. Performance optimizations for large files
  6. Visual compression reports

Conclusion

The maximal compression feature successfully implements the requirements specified in the problem statement:

✅ Include an option to maximally compress Starlog ✅ Nest all possible calls ✅ Exclude if-then clauses from nesting ✅ Exclude logical control structures (or, not) from nesting ✅ Exclude calls without an output that is another's input ✅ Preserve variables used multiple times

The implementation is clean, well-tested, well-documented, and fully backward compatible.
