**Claude Desktop** — add the same command/args under `mcpServers` in your `claude_desktop_config.json`. See the [MCP quickstart](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/quickstart/user) for the file's location on your platform.
**Claude Desktop** — edit `claude_desktop_config.json` (Settings → Developer → Edit Config), then restart Claude Desktop completely:

```json
{
"mcpServers": {
"coding-guidelines": {
"command": "node",
"args": ["/absolute/path/to/build/index.js"]
}
}
}
```

The file lives at `~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json` on macOS and `%APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json` on Windows. Paths in `args` must be absolute — a relative path is the most common reason a stdio server silently fails to start.

**Any other MCP client** — run `node /absolute/path/to/build/index.js` over stdio.

Note for organisation users: MCP in Copilot is governed by the _MCP servers in Copilot_ policy, which is **disabled by default** and must be enabled by an org or enterprise administrator.

### Re-verifying these rows

The rows marked _vendor documentation only_ have not been driven against a live client. To promote one to verified, and to keep this table honest as clients change:

1. `npm run build`, then note the absolute path to `build/index.js`.
2. Configure it in the client using the snippets above.
3. Ask the assistant something only these guidelines answer — for example _"what does our styling guide say about className?"_ — and confirm it calls `search_guidelines` rather than answering from general knowledge.
4. Update the row with the client version, the date, and how you checked it.

For Copilot in VS Code, `MCP: List Servers` in the Command Palette shows whether the server was picked up, and its output channel carries the startup banner (`... running on stdio (5 guidelines from ...)`).
