Test failures with Matplotlib 3.11.0rc1

I re-ran the latest CI job to trigger against 3.11.0rc1, and most tests seem to be failing:

PS, you may want to put this job into a weekly scheduled job or similar, and run with actual nightlies.

I'm quite confused by the job output; there appear to be 41 invocations of pytest, even though on the passing jobs there's only 2.

Thanks for running the tests, and yes we should set up a weekly scheduled job! We're running pytest subprocesses within pytest to test various config options and ensure failures are handled correctly, which unfortunately makes the pytest output difficult to interpret when there are failures.

It looks like the tests are failing due to the font updates in 3.11, so we'll need to update our baseline images.
