Hi everyone
The rumors of our deaths have been greatly exaggerated.
First of all, @asbiin and I are deeply sorry about our silence. I don't think we can really explain why we were silent the way we were, but I think it's around the pressure of this tool and the expectation from the community.
We really don't want this project to die. We care about Monica deeply. This is so far the project of our lives.
I think the direction of Monica v1 was good, but not enough. Then we wrote Chandler (which is the version available on beta), but it sucks - the technical direction is a mess, I personally dislike JS frameworks, the UI is not ideal, and it has 1000000 unfinished features.
Thanks to AI now, we are now able to rebuild something really quickly, while maintaining a very high level of quality and reviewing everything. We are not talking about AI slop here. We do care about code more than we care about everything else.
Therefore we'd like to announce several things:
- Monica v1 (the version accessible on https://monicahq.com) will stop accepting registration in the fall '26.
- Beta (beta.monicahq.com) will remain available for some months but then we will disable the instance entirely.
- We have started to build a new version which we will be released before the end of '26.
- We will probably have to archive the current issues that are specifically linked to a bug in the two previous versions and keep the ones about ideas and feature requests.
- During the building of the new version, we will have to refuse pull requests.
Bare with us for a little while, we are not the best at communication with the community, but we will try to be better.
