I am a clinical neuropsychologist and and scientist in the field of Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders (ADRD). I conduct translational research at the intersection of clinical neurology, neuropsychology, multimodal imaging, and artificial intelligence (AI). The central theme of my research revolves around the comprehensive phenotyping of neurodegenerative dementia syndromes. A major and longstanding line of my research focuses on the use of task-based and task-free functional MRI to characterize functional brain network dynamics across the AD spectrum, spanning its asymptomatic and symptomatic phases, as well as its typical and atypical clinical variants. The overarching objectives of this work are to inform disease models from a complex systems perspective and to develop therapeutic interventions incorporating or aimed at the functional pathophysiology of AD. I have also made significant contributions to the characterization of relatively less common dementia syndromes, particularly early-onset progressive dysexecutive syndromes due to AD, disorders due to genetic frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), and late-onset amnestic syndromes due to TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43). These syndromes are often underrecognized in clinical practice and neglected in large-scale clinical trials, underscoring the critical need for their exploration. Additionally, I am the Associate Director of Research of the Biological Intelligence Laboratory (BIL) at Mayo Clinic, which is a highly innovative translational research team spanning clinical practice, operations, data science, software engineering, and information technology. BIL aims to transform neurological care with equitable, high-quality, and widely accessible care models through validated institutional and departmental technology platforms. My role within BIL is to support the clinical and scientific validation of AI algorithms aimed at enhancing clinical decision-making at the point of care at Mayo Clinic. Most of my work stems from firm collaborative ties with the Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (ADRC), Mayo Clinic Study of Aging (MCSA), Neurodegeneration Research Group (NRG), Human Connectome Project-Aging (HCP-A), and ARTFL-LEFFTDS Longitudinal Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration (ALLFTD).
