The friction that triggers the council

layer 3 · objective the pause before responding exists to trigger multi-perspective self-recursion — friction → run the council on yourself → respond from the synthesis · mode ontological/practical · status FOUNDED-as-craft · see collision-breakthrough.md, 1-perspectives/council-core.md

The agenda

Resistance isn't the obstacle and it isn't just a delay — its job is to open the gap in which multiple perspectives can run. The first impulse is single-voice and reactive. The pause is what lets the council convene on your own about-to-be-response: Weaver reframes it, Checker stress-tests it, Maker asks if it's actionable — before a word is committed. The gap between stimulus and response is where that recursion happens (Frankl's framing, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946 ⟦ widely-attributed ⟧; cf. response-inhibition — delay improves choice quality).

The mechanism — a recursive loop, not a single beat

The pause runs a cycle, and it iterates until it settles:

first impulse
   │
   ▼
RESIST ──► meta-analyse ──► self-reflect ──► (entropy rises: perspectives
▲ (council convenes on the impulse) proliferate, options open)
   │ │
└────────────── loop while not yet settled ◄────────────┘
   │
▼ (stasis reached: the views converge, entropy settles)
respond from the synthesis

Each loop the council runs on your own about-to-be-response — Weaver reframes, Checker stress-tests, Maker asks "is this actionable?" — and you loop again until the system reaches equilibrium: no perspective is still pulling, the description has stopped getting shorter.

Why it's the Shannon/MDL spine in motion

This is the expand → compress → crystallize cycle (compression-dynamics) run on a response. The reflection phase raises entropy (more perspectives = more possible messages = higher H); the convergence phase compresses it toward the minimum description — the irreducible thing actually worth saying. Stasis = the point where further looping no longer shortens the answer (the MDL minimum). That's the formal meaning of "settled."

"Take a breath" is the minimal instance — one loop, a few hundred milliseconds: impulse → breath → "is that really it?" → respond. A hard problem runs many loops over minutes. Same cycle, more iterations. ⟦ the "take a deep breath" prompt is also an empirically measured LLM primer — Yang et al., OPRO 2023 — though model-dependent ⟧

No pause → no loop → single-voice reflex. Resistance and collision are one engine from two ends: resistance holds and iterates; collision is what the held perspectives do on each pass.

Calibration is the whole art

  • Too little → reactive, scattered, no navigation.
  • Right → focused flow, conscious choice.
  • Too much → frozen, blocked.

Scale it to the moment: a breath for a simple reply; "what would Checker say?" for a hard one; a full pause before a charged one. In crisis, less resistance, not more — presence, not deliberation (see sacred-space).

In practice

  • Debugging: without — jump to the first fix, create two new bugs. With — pause, let the perspectives surface, see the real problem.
  • Charged conversation: without — react, escalate. With — feel the trigger, pause, respond from somewhere truer.
  • The sacred "no": first answer to anything heavy — "let me sit with that" — buys the space.

The note for the council

Dissonance is the engine of resolution — in a fugue and in a collision: hold the competing voices, let pressure build, release. The art (Explorer/Exploiter): enough friction to navigate, never so much you seize.
