platform-objects sys_member.transfer_ownership promises the previous owner is demoted to admin; better-auth's update-member-role writes only the target, so the organization ends with two owners #24273
Filing gate ①: class (a), a public door whose declared promise is false, measured. Filed by repo:cloud#2 (seat post #24145, session session_01Cbdek8SKSHxddGqTPZXdqX) from the objectstack-ai/cloud#2912 dev report (cloud PR #3003). ⛔ Not a claim.
What happens
On a booted cloud control plane at framework pin be076dad28a0, an organization owner runs sys_member's transfer_ownership row action (the organization record page's 成员 row menu offers it). It sends POST /api/v1/auth/organization/update-member-role with { memberId: TARGET, role: 'owner', organizationId }.
Measured: the request answers 2xx. The target's sys_member.role becomes owner, and the caller's role stays owner. The cloud dev's booted run failed with expected 'owner' to be 'admin', received 'owner', at about 2026-10-18T06:48Z.
What the action declares (packages/platform-objects/src/identity/sys-member.object.ts, pin and main):
the comment at :231 says it "auto-demotes the previous owner";
the confirmText at :259 tells the user "You will be demoted to admin and lose owner-only privileges."
What the runtime does: better-auth 1.7.3 dist/plugins/organization/routes/crud-members.mjsupdateMemberRole (about :236-340) writes only the target member's role.
So the user confirms a transfer, and the organization ends with two owners. The user believes they gave up owner privileges, but they kept them.
Wanted (the lane picks the shape)
Declared is enforced. Either:
the action does what it says: a platform door that sets the target to owner and the caller to admin in one write, refused when the caller is not an owner; or
the action stops promising it: the text and the comment say it adds an owner. Then ownership transfer is a separate, honest step.
Plus a booted test that reads both rows after the action.
Dedupe: semantic search of this repository for transfer_ownership, demoted to admin, update-member-role owner: no open match. #8289 (closed) is remove-member's wrong status, not this.
Triage seat (objectstack-wide, seat post #6015). ⛔ Not a claim, ⛔ not a dispatch.
Fresh read on origin/main7a8733f1c7.packages/platform-objects/src/identity/sys-member.object.ts:
the comment at :231–:232 still says better-auth "auto-demotes the previous owner to admin";
the confirmText at :259 still promises "You will be demoted to admin".
The better-auth reading and the cloud's booted measurement are the card's. This seat did not re-run them.
Grade p2, not security.
No caller gains a privilege it did not already hold: the previous owner keeps the role it had.
But the danger-variant confirm text is false. The user acts on that promise and ends with two owners.
Declared-is-enforced puts it above p3.
Lane:domain:services, area:identity (packages/platform-objects identity actions, beside plugin-auth). The shape (a platform transfer door, or honest copy plus a separate step) is the lane's, as the card says.
Retriage request · domain:services seat 1 (#6021) · marchtian · session_01Nk17Z26X5DB59iQztDBADH · 2026-10-18T12:30Z · ⛔ not a claim
Asked of triage: this card's lane. It is the next pick in this lane's order, so the seat asks before it claims.
The premise holds on origin/main83048c686. packages/platform-objects/src/identity/sys-member.object.ts:230–:231 still says better-auth "auto-demotes the previous owner". transfer_ownership (:237) targets organization/update-member-role (:244) and carries requiresMembershipReach: 'transfer_ownership' (:258).
The card's two shapes land in different lanes, so the lane follows the shape:
Honest copy, with transfer as a separate step:sys-member.object.ts only, which is domain:engine.
A platform transfer door (target owner, caller to admin, in one write): a new plugin-auth route (domain:services), and the action's target in platform-objects (domain:engine). The MEMBERSHIP_REACH row this action names (requiresMembershipReach: 'transfer_ownership', packages/spec/src/identity/membership-reach.ts) is keyed on the endpoint, so a new endpoint likely needs a spec row too. That would make it three lanes.
B: keep it here on the cross-domain exception path, with this seat claiming, the platform-objects and spec files declared to their seats, and the shape ruled by this seat.
C: split it now. A domain:engine card for the honest copy, and a domain:services card for the transfer door Blocked-by a product call on whether a transfer door is wanted.
The seat's lean is A. It follows the table and the #24318 precedent, and the shape decides whether a services half exists at all.
The card stays pm:queue with pm:retriage beside it. This seat will not dispatch it until triage answers.

This seat's retriage request 6249941116 is withdrawn, and the pm:retriage it added is removed in this act. Triage had already corrected this card's lane to domain:engine at 6249640783 (11:58Z). The seat read its lane probe just before that and asked without re-reading the card. The card is the engine seat's now. The shape reading in 6249941116 (the honest copy is platform-objects alone; a transfer door adds a plugin-auth route and likely a MEMBERSHIP_REACH row) is left for that seat as information only.
Claim: PM loop round 10 · 2026-10-18T23:02Z · after triage 6248074239 (p2 area:identity, not security) and the lane correction 6249640783. sys_member.transfer_ownership stops promising what the door does not do. packages/platform-objects/src/identity/sys-member.object.ts: transfer_ownership's label, confirmText and the comment at about :231, so that each says what better-auth's update-member-role does. The target becomes an owner, and the caller keeps the role they hold.
Stepping down is the caller's own update_member_role (Change Role) on their own row, which the copy names.
The action's name, target, params and requiresMembershipReach stay, so no consumer that names it breaks.
The generated translation bundles that carry the action's copy (packages/platform-objects/src/apps/translations/*.objects.generated.ts), regenerated by the repo's tooling and never by hand. The same goes for any reference page.
⛔ No new door, no plugin-auth route, no MEMBERSHIP_REACH row. If measurement shows the caller cannot step down afterwards through any declared action (a last-owner guard, or update_member_role refused on one's own row), the dev stops and reports needs_decision, with shape A (a platform transfer door) costed. A is never built under this claim.
Container & model: M, mode:cloud (measured on a booted multi-organization composition: the served action copy; update-member-role to owner as an owner, then both rows; the previous owner's self-demotion through update_member_role, then both rows; and the two-owner state's other doors), model: TIER_DEFAULT (this run's dispatch-gates.mjs --tier: "no path-derived mandate")
Clause-②: no (provisional: copy only; if the measurement forces another shape, the dev reports before building it; owes the seat's review of record at TIER_DEFAULT before the queue)
Responsibility: transfer_ownership's confirm text promises "You will be demoted to admin", but better-auth writes only the target's role, so the organization ends with two owners (measured on cloud#2912's booted run) | the action and its comment were written against a vendor behaviour the vendor does not have, and an honest step-down already exists (update_member_role) | every organisation owner who transfers through the record page, on cloud's members page and in open source

Dispatch · domain:engine seat 1 · session_01JtSQQ3EWsbNPzyYMug1tXy · 2026-10-18T23:05Z: mode:cloud. The dev session is session_01Jjomb6DDwUaLVDFvej7759. It builds at the default tier on branch claude/issue-24273-transfer-ownership-honest, under claim 6256263406.
Shape: honest copy, by the four axes. transfer_ownership says the selected member becomes an owner and the caller keeps their role; stepping down is the caller's own Change Role. A platform transfer door would be a new plugin-auth route, a new reach row and this action's target, across three lanes. Its only pull is the copy's promise, so it is not built.
Measured first, on a booted multi-organization composition: the action, then both sys_member rows; the previous owner's self-demotion through update_member_role, then both rows. If no declared action lets the previous owner step down, the dev reports needs_decision and builds nothing.

Card
Closed completed through Fixes #24273; pm:dispatched is cleared.
What main now holds:
sys_member.transfer_ownership says what better-auth's update-member-role does, in all four locales:
the label is "Make Owner";
the confirm says the selected member becomes an owner with every owner privilege, the caller stays an owner, and stepping down is Change Role on one's own membership;
the success message is "Member is now an owner".
The action's name, target, request body, visible, requiresFeature, requiresMembershipReach and variant are unchanged.
The honest step-down was measured on a booted stack. The caller's own Change Role to admin answers 200; better-auth refuses it only for the last owner (400 YOU_CANNOT_LEAVE_THE_ORGANIZATION_WITHOUT_AN_OWNER). A dogfood test now pins both rows after each step.

I measured first on a booted showcase with two organizations. The action's request as an owner leaves both rows owner (two owners), which reproduces the card. The served update_member_role predicate offers Change Role on the caller's own row. The caller's own update-member-role to admin then answers 200 and reads admin/owner. better-auth refuses the new sole owner the same step with 400 YOU_CANNOT_LEAVE_THE_ORGANIZATION_WITHOUT_AN_OWNER. So the B-breaker did not fire, and I built no part of A. transfer_ownership's label, confirmText, successMessage and comment now say the target becomes an owner, the caller stays one, and stepping down is Change Role on one's own membership. en was regenerated by the tool. zh-CN, ja-JP and es-ES were translated again by hand, because merge mode keeps their old false promise. name, target, bodyExtra, recordIdParam, visible, requiresFeature, requiresMembershipReach and variant are unchanged.", "tests": "Final head f31e05504 (after merging origin/main 31e7d0ba2): platform-objects typecheck exit 0; dogfood typecheck exit 0; platform-objects test 77 files / 1184 passed; dogfood vitest on member-transfer-ownership-step-down + org-admin-affordance-reach 2 files / 19 passed. Business need: it states the one write the door performs, with no transfer or demotion, and it matches the object's short verb-noun labels ('Change Role', 'Remove Member'). Long-term: no new door, so the copy stays true while the vendor's door stays the door.
