This project explores how patterns and structures emerge through observation, interaction, and underlying rules. The work is inspired by Alexander Galloway’s concept of protocol, which describes how digital networks appear open and decentralized but are in fact governed by invisible rules that structure communication and connection.
Visually, the project represents a dynamic field of drifting points that resemble stars in a night sky. Each point functions as a node within a network, but also metaphorically as a star. A generative background composed of gradient color and scattered noise points creates the atmosphere of a cosmic environment, reinforcing the association with astronomical observation.
The interaction invites users to click two nodes in order to attempt to create a connection between them. If the system allows the connection, a line appears between the two points. Over time, these connections accumulate and resemble constellation-like structures. This visual behaviour references the historical process of constellation formation: humans repeatedly observed the night sky and gradually imagined patterns between distant stars, linking them together into meaningful shapes.
However, in this project the connections are not entirely controlled by the user. A probabilistic rule determines whether a connection will be created. This rule reflects Galloway’s idea that digital systems are governed by protocols—hidden rules that structure interactions even when systems appear open.
To introduce emergent behaviour, the nodes continuously drift through small random movements. As they move, the connections between them form shifting spatial relationships. This allows new constellation-like structures to emerge dynamically over time rather than remaining fixed.
Sound feedback further reinforces the interaction. Each click triggers a short “pong” sound, acting as a signal that the system has processed the user’s action. In this sense, the sound represents the moment when the protocol responds.
By combining generative motion, constellation-like connections, and sound interaction, the project reflects on how humans and systems both construct meaning through linking points together. Just as observers once connected stars into constellations, modern digital systems connect nodes into networks governed by
