File-opening helper contract src/utils/system.h |
The system utilities declare fopen_modsec and include the FILE type required by the interface. |
Platform-specific helper implementation src/utils/system.cc |
fopen_modsec uses _fsopen with _SH_DENYNO on MSVC and fopen on other platforms. isFile now uses the helper. |
Parser and shared-file integration src/parser/seclang-scanner.cc, src/parser/seclang-scanner.ll, src/utils/shared_files.cc |
Quoted and unquoted parser include paths, plus shared-file opening, now call fopen_modsec. Existing failure handling remains unchanged. |

The portable file-opening change preserves existing failure handling and addresses shared-file behavior on MSVC; no concrete merge-blocking risk was established.

Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 4 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

- Line 227: Update the MSVC path in fopen_modsec to open SharedFiles-compatible
files with _fsopen and _SH_DENYNO instead of fopen_s, and include the required
share.h declaration. Preserve the existing success and non-null handle checks,
while leaving non-MSVC behavior unchanged.

@airween please review this PR. I've fixed CodeRabbit's comment. The Sonar complaint is false-positive -- it complains because one line of code used in 2 places |

Thanks @AntonDemushkin, and thanks @kanseiishikawa for the original work in #3582!
What I checked:
- Built this head on macOS (Homebrew yajl/pcre2) and ran
make check: 5025 pass, 18 skip, 0 fail, includingconfig-include.jsonandconfig-include-bad.json. cppcheck is clean onsystem.ccandshared_files.cc. - Every raw
fopen()insrc/is converted:isFile,SharedFiles::add_new_handlerand bothIncludeforms in the scanner. Error paths are unchanged. - On POSIX the helper is plain
fopen(same mode/umask, same semantics). On MSVC,_fsopen(..., _SH_DENYNO)should match the sharing mode the UCRT's plainfopenuses, as far as I know, so this is behaviour-neutral. Moving away fromfopen_swas the right call: it opens non-sharable and would have broken multiple workers appending to the same audit/debug log.
Comments:
- (blocking)
src/parser/seclang-scanner.ccwas edited by hand and no longer matchesseclang-scanner.ll. Lines 8392 and 8423 carry a// NOSONARthat isn't in the.ll, and the blank line before the secondfopen_modseccall was removed. Regenerating with flex 2.6.4 drops both, so the next parser regeneration would silently revert them.NOSONARdoesn't affect the duplication metric anyway. Could you drop the two// NOSONARcomments and restore the blank line, or just regenerate the.ccfrom the.ll? - (blocking, maintainer-side) The Actions runs for 32cec37 never started (startup failure, 0 jobs), so neither the Linux/macOS matrix nor the Windows build has compiled this head. The
_MSC_VERbranch with<share.h>/_fsopenneeds at least one green Windows build before we merge.ci.ymlhas changed onv3/mastersince your base, so could you rebase onto currentv3/master? That should give us fresh runs. - (non-blocking) About Sonar: the 8.3% duplication most likely comes from the two near-identical
Includeblocks in the generated scanner, which this PR only touches by one line each. I agree it's not something to fix here. The generated parser/scanner should really be excluded from Sonar's duplication check, as it already is for cppcheck. - (non-blocking, style) Returning
FILE *instead ofbool+ out-param would make each call site a one-liner (yyin = fopen_modsec(...)) and remove the nullptr guards. Totally fine to keep as is. - (non-blocking, follow-up idea) Since all log/include opens now go through one helper, it would be a good place to set
FD_CLOEXECon POSIX later. That belongs in a separate PR so this one stays behaviour-neutral.
Once 1 and 2 are sorted, I'm happy to approve. We can then close #3582 as superseded and move on to #3521 and ModSecurity-nginx#372.

@fzipi thank you for your feedback! Regarding your comments:
Also we can miss something by excluding these files. A repo owner feedback is required for this point. Though this could be a separate PR. Skipping this point for now. I've built and run all tests twice on my linux: with and without --enable-regex-dollar-endonly param. |

what
Since fopen_s, which is used in win32, is more secure, we defined and implemented it internally so that it can be used in other operating systems as well.
Since fopen_s can have name conflicts, we're creating it as fopen_modsec.
why
SonarCloud Code Analysis has started causing errors with fopen.
references
I can't commit to @kanseiishikawa's fork, so forked that branch from #3582 and rebased on a fresh v3/master.
The goal is to resolve this error.
