Fixes #3694.

DURATION was using cpu_seconds(), so it measured process CPU time instead of elapsed time. I replaced it with a small steady_micros() helper (std::chrono::steady_clock, whole microseconds). The transaction stores that value in m_creationTimeStamp when it's created, and Duration::evaluate subtracts it from the current value and reports an integer. This matches v2, so rules migrated from v2 should behave the same.

As discussed in the issue, m_creationTimeStamp is still a const double, so there's no layout change. In transaction.h I only updated the comment that mentioned cpu_seconds(). I left m_timeStamp and the TODO alone. cpu_seconds() is now unused, and I left it in place.

For tests, I tightened variable-DURATION.json to [0-9]+ and added a case that checks DURATION expands to a non-zero integer. I also had to change issue-1725.json: it expected 0.[0-9]+, which can't match an integer.

I built this on Ubuntu 26.04 (WSL) and ran make check: 5082 passed, 0 failed, 50 skipped.

About CHANGES: there wasn't an unreleased section, so I added a v3.0.18 heading with a single entry covering the clock and the unit change. Feel free to change the heading or version. I'll swap the issue reference for this PR's number once it exists.

One small note: the non-zero test assumes at least a microsecond passes before the rule runs. That should hold with the clocks on Linux, macOS and Windows, but I haven't been able to check the other two.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • DURATION now measures elapsed wall-clock time and reports whole microseconds instead of process CPU time. This behavior is supported on macOS and Windows.
    • Duration values are now reported as integers rather than fractional seconds. Rules that inspect DURATION may observe different values.
    • Updated regression checks to verify integer-form duration values and a positive elapsed-time result.

Walkthrough

The transaction creation timestamp and DURATION now use std::chrono::steady_clock in microseconds. DURATION produces an integer value. Regression expectations and the v3.0.18 release notes reflect the updated timing and output format.

Changes: DURATION timing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Steady-clock timestamp capture
src/utils/system.h, src/utils/system.cc, headers/modsecurity/transaction.h, src/transaction.cc
A steady_micros() utility returns steady-clock microseconds. Transactions use this value as their creation timestamp, stored as a double.
DURATION calculation and regression coverage
src/variables/duration.cc, test/test-cases/regression/variable-DURATION.json, test/test-cases/regression/issue-1725.json, CHANGES
Duration::evaluate calculates elapsed microseconds and converts the result to int64_t. Regression expectations match integer output, and the release notes describe the updated behavior.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#3694] requires elapsed monotonic time and one documented unit. Transaction stores utils::steady_micros(), which uses std::chrono::steady_clock. Duration::evaluate subtracts the creation value and emits an integer microsecond value. The code comment and CHANGES entry document the microsecond unit. Regression tests cover integer output and a positive duration. The implementation satisfies the issue's v2-compatible microsecond option.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within [#3694]. The helper, transaction initialization, duration calculation, documentation, release note, and regression tests support the clock or unit correction. The [#1725] expectation changes because the corrected value is an integer. No unrelated change is shown.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 2 functions across 5 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Make the DURATION assertion fail for CPU-time values.

The pattern duration=[1-9][0-9]*; also matches a positive CPU time in microseconds. This test does not detect a return to CPU-time measurement, which issue #3694 reports. The test case format has no delay field, and the inspected regression sources contain no sleep or wait mechanism. A wait-based check is therefore not expressible in this suite as written. A check that detects the wall-clock behavior needs a timing mechanism that this suite does not provide.

Review comment at @test/test-cases/regression/variable-DURATION.json at line 86:
Update the DURATION assertion in the regression case so it distinguishes
wall-clock duration from positive CPU-time values; the current positive-integer
pattern accepts both. The test format provides no delay or wait mechanism, so
use only a timing signal supported by this suite.

⚠️ Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Update the v3 reference manual before release.

The v3 manual still specifies milliseconds, but this calculation returns microseconds. (github.com) A rule written from the manual with @gt 5000 would trigger after about 5 ms instead of 5 seconds. Coordinate the manual update with this release.

Based on learnings: documentation must match the units computed by the implementation.

Thanks @airween, the PR is up: #3721

I kept to your three points: m_creationTimeStamp is still a const double, m_timeStamp and the TODO are untouched, and the unit is whole microseconds. I also had to change issue-1725.json, since its 0.[0-9]+ pattern can't match an integer.
