Nexus is free during the public beta, but there's no automated purchase or self-serve signup. Keys are issued manually by Northbyte Studios. This is a deliberate trade-off: no payment processor, no account system, no server at all. The cost is that getting a key takes a human on the other end.

The first 20 to 30 active beta testers may, at Northbyte Studios' discretion, receive a complimentary lifetime license as a thank-you. This isn't a formal program with published eligibility rules. Just tell us you're using Nexus and we'll take it from there.
When you first run Nexus, you'll be prompted for a license key. Enter it exactly as given to you and follow the on-screen steps to set your master password and generate your recovery phrase.
Keys are:
- Non-transferable: issued to you personally.
- Bound to your machine. Verification happens entirely offline, on your device. There's no server checking in.
Because activation is machine-bound and verified locally, there's currently no self-service way to move a key to a new machine from inside the app. If you need to reinstall Nexus or move to a different computer, reach out to us on Discord or by email and we'll help you sort it out.
First check Troubleshooting for common activation issues. If that doesn't resolve it, contact us with your key and a description of what happened, and we'll look into it.
Offline key verification during the free beta is intentionally lightweight, proportionate to a free product with nothing to steal, not designed to resist a determined attacker. We're upfront about this in SECURITY.md. Full server-backed verification is planned for the paid version (see Roadmap).
