fix: make the session tests robust to CI load (ROADMAP.md #72) - #91
Conversation
start_session reads DOCX_SESSION_START_TIMEOUT for its budget (explicit argument wins, 30 s default unchanged) and a start that runs out of budget now reports which phase timed out, whether the kernel was still alive, the load average, the connection-file summary and the kernel's stderr. CI sets the variable to 120. The session tests replace their six timing sleeps with a handshake on the kernel's execute_input broadcast, replace the wall-clock stop assertion with a behavioural one (no signal sent, kernel gone), and add fake-kernel regression tests for the diagnosed failure shape: connection file present, control channel never answering.

📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe session startup timeout now supports environment configuration and explicit overrides. Startup uses one shared deadline for connection-file and control-channel readiness. Timeout failures include kernel and connection diagnostics. CI, documentation, and tests use the new behavior. ChangesSession startup behavior
Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to The change makes session startup timing configurable and improves timeout diagnostics, but a non-finite environment value could leave startup waiting indefinitely, the readiness phase can slightly exceed the configured budget, and a test synchronization gap may preserve CI flakiness. The PR is mergeable with explicit owner awareness and follow-up on these bounded issues. Sequence Diagram(s)sequenceDiagram

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Do not extend the shared startup budget.
max(1.0, ...) grants a full extra second when the connection file appears near, or after, deadline. For timeout=1.0, the control-channel phase can therefore run until almost two seconds. Abort when no budget remains, then pass only the actual remaining duration to _kernel_alive().

Establish IOPub readiness before sending the hog.
_client() starts the IOPub channel, but _kernel_alive() waits only for a control-channel reply. In jupyter-client 8.6.0 and the locked 8.9.1, wait_for_ready() also checks IOPub. If the subscription is not ready, the matching execute_input message can be missed and the loop can wait until START_BUDGET. Call hog.wait_for_ready(timeout=START_BUDGET) or perform an equivalent handshake before hog.execute(code).

…OADMAP.md #72) DOCX_SESSION_START_TIMEOUT becomes DOCX_EDITOR_SESSION_START_TIMEOUT, matching the repo's one existing env var before the name ships. The budget now rejects inf (an unbounded wait defeats the diagnostic), CI sets 60 instead of 120 and bounds the job at 45 minutes so a runner where every kernel start times out fails in bounded time. The three fake-kernel tests that only checked the error text now also prove the stand-in died, the stop-session kill spy filters on the kernel's pid, and the second-phase budget is computed at its use so the report cannot total more than the budget.
What
start_sessionreads its readiness budget fromDOCX_EDITOR_SESSION_START_TIMEOUT(explicit argument wins; 30 s default unchanged; must be a finite positive number; CI sets 60), and a start that runs out of budget now reports which phase timed out, whether the kernel was still alive, the load average, the connection-file summary and the kernel's stderr. The session tests no longer wait on wall-clock sleeps or assert on elapsed seconds. Why
Session tests failed on single CI jobs and passed on rerun; each flake cost a 20–30 min rerun. The worst case, 41 errors in one job, gave no way to tell a slow runner from a broken one.
How
ipykernel writes
kernel.jsonas soon as its sockets are bound, before it imports IPython and registers the control dispatcher. So the connection file appears almost at once and nearly the whole start is spent waiting for thekernel_inforeply: that readiness wait is where the budget goes, not a short leftover of the file wait, and a fixed 30 s runs out on a 2-vCPU runner with two xdist workers spawning kernels under coverage. The budget is now tunable and_abortinsession.pyreports how it was split. The CI job is bounded at 45 minutes so a runner where every start times out fails in bounded time. The 41 errors were one failure: the module-scoped
session_connfixture timed out once, and pytest re-raises a cached scoped-fixture setup error for every later test in the module. The fixture stays retry-free so that error carries the diagnosis.Tests:
_occupied()intests/test_session.pywaits for the kernel'sexecute_inputbroadcast instead of sleeping;test_stop_session_honours_the_shutdown_ackasserts no signal reached the kernel and it exited anyway;TestStartFailureDiagnosisdrives the timeout path with a stand-in kernel that writeskernel.jsonand never serves the control channel, and proves the stand-in is killed.Testing
