Fixes #1827

A query that orders by the ingest timestamp can return rows out of order after the stream has been stored as Parquet. A later timestamp can appear immediately after an earlier one, often only a millisecond or two apart. The rows and counts are otherwise correct, and the query raises no error.

The Parquet footer still declares a descending timestamp sort when rows were appended out of that order, and manifest creation copies that claim into sort_order_id. Planning treated a single file carrying that claim as time-ordered and advertised output ordering on the scan, so the sort was dropped from the physical plan. Column min and max statistics look the same for that file and for one whose rows really are sorted.

Changes:

  • partitioned_files now always reports the scan as unordered.
  • Parquet scans and the legacy listing-table scan are wrapped in UnorderedExec, which runs the child plan unchanged and publishes properties with no output ordering. The sort stays for both full results and LIMIT.
  • UnorderedExec passes child statistics, repartitioning, and filter pushdown through to the wrapped scan. It does not report input order as kept, so sort pushdown cannot trust the unverified Parquet ordering.
  • Files already on disk and the manifest format are left as they are.
  • The regression test writes out-of-order batches, including null timestamps, through the real writer and checks descending order on both providers.

cargo test --lib passes locally (537 passed, 1 ignored).

Description

This PR has:

  • been tested to ensure log ingestion and log query works.
  • added comments explaining the "why" and the intent of the code wherever would not be obvious for an unfamiliar reader.
  • added documentation for new or modified features or behaviors.
    This change touches no documentation.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Parquet, legacy listing, and manifest-derived scans no longer imply results are ordered based on file metadata. Apply an explicit sort when order matters.
    • Explicitly sorted results remain ordered, including when Parquet metadata indicates an ordering. Sort-dependent results, such as limited queries, now follow the requested sort rather than assumed file ordering.

partitioned_files now always reports the scan as unordered. Parquet
scans and the legacy listing-table scan are wrapped in UnorderedExec,
which runs the child plan unchanged and publishes properties with no
output ordering, so the sort stays for both full results and LIMIT.
Files already on disk and the manifest format are left as they are. The
regression test writes out-of-order batches, including null timestamps,
through the real writer and checks descending order on both providers.

Walkthrough

Parquet and legacy listing scans no longer advertise ordering inferred from manifest or footer metadata. Tests check explicit sorting and expected results with and without LIMIT.

Changes

Scan ordering

Layer / File(s) Summary
Remove inferred scan ordering
src/query/stream_schema_provider.rs
A plan wrapper forwards execution while reporting no output ordering. Manifest sort metadata and timestamp ranges no longer mark scans as time-ordered.
Apply ordering removal to scan plans
src/query/stream_schema_provider.rs
Parquet and legacy listing scan plans use the wrapper. Test builds use session-configured batch size; other builds use the global execution batch size.
Verify scan sorting
src/query/stream_schema_provider.rs
Tests cover timestamp ordering and nullable values. They check statistics, ordering metadata, and query results with and without LIMIT for standard and legacy listing scans.

The description explains the defect, root cause, implementation, regression coverage, test result, and issue reference. It also completes the repository checklist and explains why documentation was not added.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#1827] The coding requirements are met at reviewed head 6ab51d6.

  1. Scan planning no longer trusts footer or manifest ordering. partitioned_files sets output_ordered_by_time = false unconditionally. file_time_statistics and file_groups_are_time_ordered are removed.
  2. Parquet scans (without_output_ordering(plan)) and the legacy ListingTable scan (without_output_ordering(listing.scan(...))) are wrapped. without_output_ordering returns UnorderedExec, whose PlanProperties use EquivalenceProperties::new(plan.schema()) and advertise no output ordering. DataFusion keeps the SortExec for ORDER BY p_timestamp DESC NULLS LAST, with or without LIMIT.
  3. Files persisted by earlier versions are covered. The fix acts on the scan side. The Parquet and manifest formats are unchanged.
  4. UnorderedExec does not report input order as kept. Its repartitioned and gather_filters_for_pushdown results are re-wrapped, so sort pushdown cannot reuse the unverified child order.
  5. Regression tests: writer_parquet_requires_sort_even_with_footer_ordering uses the real writer path. manifest_sort_metadata_does_not_advertise_time_order checks partitioned_files for p_timestamp and event_time. The prior assessment reports coverage of out-of-order batches, null timestamps, both providers, and limited queries. The full test body was truncated in this review, so that coverage rests on the prior assessment.

Incremental commits 4308bb1 and 838c28c add the pass-through methods. Commit 6ab51d6 makes without_output_ordering public. These match the issue and the PR description.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Every reviewed change connects to the #1827 fix or its regression test.

  • without_output_ordering and UnorderedExec: the core fix. The statistics_from_inputs, repartitioned, and gather_filters_for_pushdown methods keep the wrapped scan's performance. The PR description states this purpose.
  • partitioned_files: ignores the ordering claim and returns false. The time_column parameter is renamed _time_column and is now unused. This is a minor cleanup.
  • balanced_file_groups comment: updated to match the new no-ordering-claim behavior.
  • #[cfg(test)] batch size from the session config: test support. Non-test builds keep PARSEABLE.options.execution_batch_size, so production behavior is unchanged.
  • Removed SortOrder import and removed tests for the deleted helpers.
  • New tests: they support the regression requirement.

The reviewed diff shows no unrelated product behavior or storage-format change. Diff content beyond the first 16000 bytes of stream_schema_provider.rs was not inspected. No other file was checked in this review.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 10.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 10 functions across 1 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Comment thread src/query/stream_schema_provider.rs
The wrapper only hides the scan ordering, so it now forwards child
statistics, repartitioned scans and parent filter pushdown. It still
does not report input order as kept, so sort pushdown cannot trust the
unverified parquet ordering.
