Summary

This PR introduces v1.0.0, the first stable major release of react-native-vision-camera-mlkit.

⚠️ Breaking change
This is a complete rewrite / full recode of the project.
Diff stats: 21,446 additions / 13,099 deletions

The previous versions (< 0.1.0) were preview / experimental releases.
This PR marks the transition to a production-ready architecture.

📌 Context & Motivation

This release fulfills and delivers on the roadmap described in
📣 Project Status Update — Big Update Coming Soon!
👉 #8

Development is officially resumed, and the project has been rebuilt from the ground up with a strong focus on performance, stability, maintainability, and platform parity.

✨ What’s New in v1.0.0

🔁 Complete Project Rewrite

  • Entire codebase refactored and redesigned
  • Clean, modular, and scalable architecture
  • Shared abstractions across plugins
  • Significantly easier to maintain and extend

⚡ Massive Performance Improvements

  • Optimized native pipelines
  • Reduced overhead between JS ↔ native
  • Better memory management
  • Faster processing for both real-time frames and static images

This release delivers way, way better performance compared to all previous versions.

🍎 Full iOS Native Support (Swift)

  • Complete iOS implementation added
  • Native Swift module
  • Updated ML Kit iOS pods
  • Much better feature parity between Android and iOS

Previous releases were effectively Android-only — this is no longer the case.

🧩 Selective ML Kit API Installation

  • Install only what you need
  • No longer required to install all ML Kit APIs by default
  • Smaller app size
  • Faster builds
  • Cleaner dependency graph

🧠 Shared Plugin Options & Arguments

  • New shared options layer across ML Kit plugins
  • Consistent API surface
  • Easier cross-plugin feature reuse
  • Foundation for upcoming advanced features (ROI, preprocessing, etc.)

🖼️ Static Image Processing Support

  • ML Kit processing now supports:

    • 🎥 Vision Camera frame processors
    • 🖼️ Static images
  • Enables use cases beyond live camera frames

📱 Example App — Fully Rewritten

  • Example app completely rebuilt
  • Reflects new APIs and best practices
  • Easier to test, debug, and explore features

🧪 ML Kit Plugin Status (Current Release)

✅ Implemented

  • Text Recognition

⏳ Coming Next

  • Face Detection
  • Object Detection + Tracking
  • Pose Detection
  • Digital Ink Recognition
  • Remaining ML Kit APIs

These will land in upcoming releases.

🔮 Upcoming Features (Already Planned)

🎯 Region of Interest (ROI) — Shared Feature

regionOfInterest: {
  x: number,
  y: number,
  width: number,
  height: number
}

Description

  • Focus ML processing on a specific area of the image/frame
  • Coordinates are normalized (0–1)

Why this matters

  • 🚀 Performance: Skip irrelevant regions
  • 🎯 Accuracy: Focus detection where it matters
  • 🧠 Shared logic across all ML Kit plugins

Example

useTextRecognition({
  regionOfInterest: { x: 0.2, y: 0.3, width: 0.6, height: 0.4 }
})

🔗 Compatibility

This package depends on:

Package Version
react-native-vision-camera >= 4.0.1
react-native-worklets-core >= 1.2.0

The goal is to:

  • Support the latest versions
  • Maintain a compatibility matrix so users can safely mix versions

🏁 Summary

  • ✅ First stable major release
  • 🔥 Complete rewrite
  • ⚡ Major performance gains
  • 🍎 Full iOS support
  • 🧩 Modular & selective ML Kit APIs
  • 🖼️ Static image processing
  • 📱 Rebuilt example app
  • 🚧 More ML Kit features coming soon

This PR lays the foundation for all future development.

Thanks to everyone who supported the project — more updates are on the way! ❤️

Yeah—checks are failing due to build-ios.yml. This is a workflow implementation issue, not an actual iOS build problem. I’ll merge this PR and fix the workflow afterward.
