GitHub Actions can run steps concurrently by grouping them under `parallel:`. The grouped steps sit one level below the job's step list, so every detector skipped them: credential sources, unpinned and compromised actions, script, artifact, and AI-agent injection, OIDC consumers, environment checks, and pin suggestions all missed steps inside a group. Add parsers.steps.expand_steps/job_steps, which flatten parallel groups in order, and route every step loop through them. Background steps and cancel/wait steps are ordinary step mappings and need no special case. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

A YAML alias can make a parallel group contain itself. Recursive expansion then hit the recursion limit, and the pipeline dropped every workflow finding for the repository. Expand groups iteratively and do not re-enter a group that is already open. Artifact poisoning only counted run steps listed after a download. A parallel sibling, or a background step started earlier, can execute the downloaded content too, so count those as executing after the download. Cap total expansion of aliased groups
When an acyclic YAML alias graph references each preceding parallel list more than once, the group ID leaves open_groups after each traversal and is expanded again. This makes a workflow with only n nested definitions produce 2^n entries; for example, 22 levels produce 4,194,304 entries and take roughly 11 seconds locally, while slightly deeper inputs can exhaust memory and prevent the remaining workflows from being scanned. Add an overall expansion limit or otherwise avoid materializing repeated alias subgraphs.

Fixed in 0654e73. now enters each aliased list once per traversal, bounding work to the parsed workflow graph. A 12-level repeated acyclic alias regression expands to one unique step instead of 4,096 copies.

Clear completed background executions at barriers
When an executing background step is followed by wait, wait-all, or a matching cancel before the artifact download, background_execution remains true forever, so the later download is incorrectly classified as concurrent execution and can elevate the finding to HIGH or CRITICAL. GitHub specifies that wait pauses until the referenced steps complete and cancel terminates the referenced step, so these control steps need to remove the affected executions from the active-background state.

Fixed in f787628. Artifact analysis tracks named and anonymous active background executions, then clears them at , matching , or barriers. Regressions cover every form.

Treat self-repository actions as pinned
When a parallel group contains a valid uses: $/path/to/action, this newly expanded loop passes it to classify_action_ref(), which recognizes only ./ and ../ as local; because a valid $/ reference has no @ suffix, it is classified as unresolvable and reported as an unpinned external action. The pin resolver's new $/ exclusion does not suppress this primary scan finding. GitHub documents that $/ resolves to the current repository at the running commit and must not include a ref suffix, so it should be treated as local/pinned here as well. GitHub workflow syntax

Fixed in 3c58148. Both pin classification and SHA-pinning checks now treat as same-repository/local, and a parallel-group regression confirms it is not reported as unpinned.

Clear parallel members at the implicit wait
When an executing member of a parallel group also declares background: true, these lines add it to the state carried into subsequent top-level groups, so a later artifact download is incorrectly considered concurrent and can elevate the finding to HIGH or CRITICAL. A parallel group has an implicit wait before the next step regardless of the members' background representation, so backgrounds originating within that group must be removed at its boundary. GitHub workflow syntax

Fixed in 3c58148. Concurrent groups now carry an explicit implicit-wait marker. Background executions started inside a group are retired at that boundary, while preexisting backgrounds remain active. Both cases have regressions.

ActionScope/actionscope/parsers/workflow.py
Line 317 in 0654e73
When a newly scanned parallel member uses the valid $/path/to/action form, classify_action_ref() still recognizes only ./ and ../ as local and therefore reports the reference as an unpinned external action. GitHub specifies that $/ resolves to the current repository at the running commit (workflow syntax). Fresh evidence in the latest head is that the local-reference fix only excludes $/ in the pin resolver, while this primary finding path remains unchanged, so the false-positive finding is still emitted.

Clear explicit backgrounds at the parallel-group boundary
When an executing member of a parallel group explicitly declares background: true, this adds it to the active state that is carried into later top-level groups, so a subsequent artifact download is incorrectly treated as concurrent and may raise the finding to HIGH or CRITICAL. GitHub defines parallel as background steps followed by an implicit wait, so every member has completed before the next top-level step starts (workflow syntax). Fresh evidence in the latest head is that the lifecycle fix still inserts this member here without clearing it at the group boundary.

Fixes #154.
Problem
GitHub Actions can run steps concurrently by grouping them under
parallel:(changelog). The grouped steps are nested one level belowjobs.<id>.steps, and every step loop in ActionScope only looked at the top level. A workflow that moved itsconfigure-aws-credentialsstep and an injectablerun:step into a parallel group dropped from critical to high: the credential binding, unpinned action, and script injection findings all disappeared.Change
actionscope/parsers/steps.pywithexpand_steps()/job_steps(), which flattenparallelgroups in order and drop non-mapping entries._job_steps,_steps) are removed.background: truesteps andcancel:/waitsteps are ordinary step mappings, so they need no special handling. Control steps have nousesorrun, so detectors skip them as before.Tests
tests/test_parallel_steps.py:coverage_repofixture (which triggers every detector), rewrites each job's steps as aparallel:group or asbackground: truesteps, and asserts the scan JSON is identical to the sequential original;maintoo and is kept as a guard.ruff checkclean; full suite: 823 passed.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
