Summary

Fixes #287.

  • validate the span between the first and last interpolation timepoints instead of the absolute final time
  • accept valid negative and offset time ranges with and without normalization
  • reject equal endpoints with the intended tolerance message before normalization
  • add focused regression coverage for each case

Validation

  • MPLBACKEND=Agg python -m pytest tests/test_spline.py -q — 11 passed, 2 skipped
  • MPLBACKEND=Agg python -m pytest -q --timeout=50 --timeout_method=thread — 571 passed, 3 skipped, 99 subtests passed
  • Black 23.10.0 check on both changed files
  • git diff --check

AI assistance was used to investigate, implement, and validate this focused change.

Validate the endpoint span instead of the absolute final time so negative and offset time ranges are accepted. Report equal endpoints clearly before normalization and cover both normalized and unnormalized regressions.
