LLM Guardrails — Adversarial Test Platform

Part of the ImpactPods Security Project
Attack Platform: Sasidhar-7302 | Defence System: raksh-dev/guardrails_defence


Overview

This repository contains an automated red-team evaluation platform that tests the security of an LLM-powered library management API. The system is split into two halves:

The attack platform exercises all guarded endpoints with 127 test assertions drawn from a 63-case red-team evaluator dataset, identifies security gaps, and produces a structured terminal report classifying every result as BLOCKED, GAP, FALSE-POSITIVE, or ALLOWED.

Quick Start

The attack/ tests import the real defence/ FastAPI application and guardrail modules. They can run in two modes:

1. Defence setup

Because the attack/ scripts import code from defence/, the defence/ Python dependencies and a minimal .env file must be set up first.

pip install -r defence/requirements.txt

Create a minimal environment file:

cp defence/.env.example defence/.env

For fake mode the scripts automatically override .env with dummy values, so no real credentials are needed. For real mode, fill in defence/.env with your actual database, Supabase, and LLM credentials.

2. Run the isolated tests (fake mode, default)

Run the tests with no live server, DB, or LLM required:

httpx is already included in defence/requirements.txt, so a separate install is usually not necessary.

3. Run against real defence services (real mode)

Edit attack/config.json and set use_real_services to true so the tests use the real defence LLM, DB, vector store, and storage. The defence/.env must contain valid credentials and the Supabase/database endpoints must be reachable.

The USE_REAL_SERVICES environment variable can still override attack/config.json when needed (e.g., in CI/CD).

Current limitation: the output-guard and RAG tests were designed around the fake LLM and fake vector store. In real mode they will need to be redesigned. The input-guard and conversation-history tests will run against the real stack.

4. (Optional) Test against a live defence server

If you want to exercise the real application over the network:

Edit BASE_URL in attack/test_live_server.py if your server is not running on http://localhost:8000.


Attack Categories Covered

The platform covers all 5 attack classes specified in the project brief, plus 9 additional categories from the red-team evaluator dataset:

The defence correctly blocks 63% of direct/obvious attacks (jailbreaks, role hijacks, direct overrides). The remaining gaps are documented with root causes and recommended fixes in attack/SECURITY_GAPS.md.

Key gap categories:

  • Encoded payloads (Base64/URL/HTML entity) bypass the keyword-based pattern scanner
  • Data extraction phrasing variants avoid known regex triggers
  • Code execution (os.popen, eval) not covered in input rules
  • Multi-turn slow-burn poisoning uses unmatched phrase variants
  • Business logic manipulation requires semantic understanding beyond regex
