How to make ruby-build use native Fedora libraries?

On my machine I also have brew installed for various things.
And I'm also using asdf (installed via brew) with asdf-ruby which is making use of ruby-build.

When I'm installing Ruby it's using the homebrew references though instead of the Fedora ones.

It's documented in the README too:

it will try to link Ruby to the appropriate OpenSSL version, even if that means downloading and compiling OpenSSL itself; it will discover and link to Homebrew-installed instances of some libraries like libyaml and readline, etc.

But maybe it's too optimistic regarding that? 🤔

I'd prefer to have the Fedora ones though so I tried the following:

$ sudo dnf install openssl-devel libyaml-devel libffi-devel readline-devel zlib-devel gdbm-devel ncurses-devel gmp-devel

$ export RUBY_CONFIGURE_OPTS="--with-openssl-dir=/usr --with-libyaml-dir=/usr"
export CONFIGURE_ARGS="--with-opt-dir=/usr"
export RUBY_BUILD_SKIP_HOMEBREW=1

It doesn't seem to be enough just to export these though

$ asdf install ruby 3.2.2

==> Installing ruby-3.2.2...
ruby-build: using readline from homebrew
ruby-build: using gmp from homebrew
-> ./configure "--prefix=$HOME/.asdf/installs/ruby/3.2.2" --enable-shared --with-readline-dir=/home/linuxbrew/.linuxbrew/opt/readline --with-gmp-dir=/home/linuxbrew/.linuxbrew/opt/gmp --with-ext=openssl,psych,+ --with-openssl-dir=/usr --with-libyaml-dir=/usr

Hi, is there a problem with Linuxbrew libraries being used over your system ones? Does Ruby fail to compile as a result?

If you want to skip brew packages being used, there is no environment variable like "RUBY_BUILD_SKIP_BREW". Instead, for every dependency you have to pass --with-<LIB>-dir configure options like you're already doing for openssl. It looks like you would still have to do it for gmp and for readline.

I see that you also tried to add --with-opt-dir. That's a valid Ruby configure flag, but instead of in CONFIGURE_ARGS, that should also go into RUBY_CONFIGURE_OPTS. I wonder whether ruby-build should avoid consulting brew packages altogether if that flag was passed? It would save you from having to list every dependency explicitly and point it to /usr.

Is it possible to do this with one option instead?
It is useful to use the distribution libraries to avoid compatibility issues when compiling native components. e.g. mysql client links to system openssl but ruby installation links to openssl from homebrew. It opens the possiblity of hard to debug issues.
