ROB-1788

Problem: Docs authors can't write a docs.robusta.dev page in Markdown. The Sphinx build has no Markdown parser, so the Markdown pages planned for the Robusta app screens can't be published.

Change:

  • Sphinx builds .md pages with MyST next to the .rst pages. Markdown pages get admonitions, tabs, links to headings, and the region-aware robusta-code, robusta-url and robusta-region-picker directives.
  • The runner image's markdown-it-py moves from 4.2.0 to 3.0.0, because myst-parser for Sphinx 6 needs 3.x and the docs share the runner's lockfile. No runner code imports markdown-it-py; it is installed only because pyiceberg needs rich, and rich needs it.

Tests (at affb729):

  • Built the whole site and compared all 350 pages with a master build: identical, apart from the example trigger that action pages pick at random on each build (ROB-1801) and random image-viewer ids.
  • A Markdown page with each feature above (not committed) built with no warnings and rendered every feature.

Walkthrough

The documentation setup adds myst-parser as a development dependency and enables MyST parsing in Sphinx. The region box examples now include MyST directives and an inline role alongside the existing reStructuredText examples.

Explanation

The title names the main change: Sphinx docs now build MyST Markdown pages. ROB-1788 is the ticket reference. The raw summary and objectives both center on adding MyST Markdown support to the Sphinx build, so the title matches the changeset.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description states the problem (the Sphinx build has no Markdown parser). It lists the change (MyST support, markdown-it-py bump from 4.2.0 to 3.0.0) and the testing done. It matches the changeset in docs/conf.py, docs/_ext/region_box.py and pyproject.toml.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 2 files.

✅ Docker image ready for 903f9dc (built in 35s)

⚠️ Warning: does not support ARM (ARM images are built on release only - not on every PR)

Use this tag to pull the image for testing.

📋 Copy commands

⚠️ Temporary images are deleted after 30 days. Copy to a permanent registry before using them:

gcloud auth configure-docker us-central1-docker.pkg.dev
docker pull us-central1-docker.pkg.dev/robusta-development/temporary-builds/robusta-runner:903f9dc
docker tag us-central1-docker.pkg.dev/robusta-development/temporary-builds/robusta-runner:903f9dc me-west1-docker.pkg.dev/robusta-development/development/robusta-runner-dev:903f9dc
docker push me-west1-docker.pkg.dev/robusta-development/development/robusta-runner-dev:903f9dc

Patch Helm values in one line:

helm upgrade --install robusta robusta/robusta \
  --reuse-values \
  --set runner.image=me-west1-docker.pkg.dev/robusta-development/development/robusta-runner-dev:903f9dc

myst-parser for Sphinx 6 needs markdown-it-py 3, and the shared lock would
have moved the runner image's markdown-it-py from 4.2.0 to 3.0.0. The docs
tools now resolve in docs/poetry.lock, seeded from the runner's lock so every
shared package keeps its version; the runner's lock only loses the docs
packages.

The docs lock held a full copy of the runner's dependencies through a path
dependency, so it went stale on every runner lock update and had to be
relocked on every runner constraint change. docs/install.sh now installs the
runner from the root lock and then the docs tools from a lock of their own.
sphinxcontrib-images 1.0.1 no longer imports pkg_resources, so the build
works with the runner's setuptools 83 and needs no setuptools downgrade.
sphinxcontrib-details-directive and sphinxcontrib-images 0.9.4 both import
pkg_resources, so sphinxcontrib-images 1.0.1 alone does not let the build run
on setuptools 83. The pin replaces the deploy workflow's own setuptools
downgrade and also covers docs.Dockerfile and docs_autobuild.sh.
With a virtualenv active, Poetry installs into it, so running the docs scripts
from the runner's environment would move its markdown-it-py and setuptools.
make clean now runs through poetry run as well, where sphinx-build is.
myst-parser joins the root dev dependencies. The runner image's markdown-it-py
moves from 4.2.0 to 3.0.0, which myst-parser 3 needs; no runner code imports
markdown-it-py or rich, which pulls it in through pyiceberg. A second lock
cost more than that: an install script, a setuptools pin for the docs
extensions that import pkg_resources, and a lock to keep current.

Review comments at @docs/install.sh:
- Line 12: Update the Poetry install invocation in the docs setup so the root
project’s locked dependencies, including the main group and all extras, are
installed into the selected docs environment even when Poetry has a registered
root environment. Explicitly establish that target environment rather than
relying on VIRTUAL_ENV to override Poetry’s selection.
- Line 8: Clear CONDA_PREFIX as well as VIRTUAL_ENV before Poetry runs in the
docs install and autobuild scripts, since install.sh runs as a child process and
cannot affect the environment used by docs_autobuild.sh.
