About Miles Sound System

The Miles Sound System (MSS) is one of the most influential audio middleware libraries in the history of PC and console gaming. Originally developed by John Miles, then embraced by RAD Game Tools, MSS powered audio in thousands of commercial titles across DOS, Windows, PlayStation, Xbox, Dreamcast, GameCube, and more. If you have ever played a game between 1995 and 2010, there is a good chance you have "heard" the work of Miles.

Miles Sound System was used in over 7,000 titles, ranging from AAA franchises to indie classics. Understanding how MSS functioned gives insight into:

  • Middleware engineering practices from the late ’90s and early 2000s
  • Cross-platform audio abstraction layers
  • The evolution of audio codecs, 3D sound, and streaming
  • Licensing and binary distribution models
  • Challenges in preserving proprietary software

This package is provided for educational, preservation, and modding purposes only. RAD Game Tools reserve to itself any licensing, including, but not restricted to, commercial use.

This package is intended for software preservationist to be used as repository to softwares already distributed with Miles. The intention is backward compatibility. Developers who already used Miles in older games or applications can continue to maintain, update, or fix those products. This prevents old software from breaking or becoming unusable.

This package is available to you now because Miles is retired as a commercial product, thus being in exemption of conflict with the ongoing business activities by RAD Game Tools. Because Miles is retired, making it available for maintenance of older software does not interfere with the company’s commercial interests.

RAD Game Tools explicitly does not want new projects to use Miles. Since it is no longer a commercial product and they have retired it, they do not provide support, updates, or licenses for new development. Any new software relying on it would be unsupported and legally gray.

RAD Game Tools still reserves exclusively to itself any possibility of relicensing or sublicensing, which actually is not commercial in anyway. This project is published internally under administrative act by SIGMA Technology Group.

Miles Sound System is (c) 1991-2002 RAD Game Tools. Any additional effort for maintenance is (c) 2011-2017 SIGMA FEDERATION. All rights reserved; to their respective elaborators and collaborators.
