sushStream v2.0 - Post-Audit Status

Last updated: 2026-01-23 All critical issues from initial audit have been addressed.

What's Fixed (v2.0 Release)

Issue Status Implementation
Replay Protection DONE LruCache<[u8;12], Instant> in ReassemblyManager, 100k entries, 5-min TTL
Per-IP DoS Limits DONE buffers_per_ip: HashMap<IpAddr, usize>, max 50 per IP
Graceful Shutdown DONE tokio::signal::ctrl_c() handler in TUN and SOCKS5 modes
Loss Rate Decay DONE Now decays on success: *= 0.99 (was only increasing)
Port Hopping DONE HoppingSocket with atomic rebind via RwLock<Arc<UdpSocket>>
Stream ID Collision DONE HashSet<u32> tracks active IDs, collision detection on wrap
XDP-Daemon Bridge DONE File-based via /sys/fs/bpf/sush/authorized_list.txt
Multi-User Keys PARTIAL UserManager can derive per-user keys, but tunnel uses single key

Security Checklist

[x] Nonce reuse prevention (LRU cache)
[x] Memory exhaustion protection (per-IP limits)
[x] Silent drop on auth fail (no timing oracle)
[x] Header obfuscation (XOR mask with key-derived IV)
[x] ChaCha20-Poly1305 AEAD
[x] No unwrap() in hot path
[ ] Formal security audit (not done)
[ ] Key rotation (not implemented)
[ ] Rate limiting per IP (basic, via buffer limits only)

Architecture Notes

Fragmentation Pipeline:

IP Packet (1280B) → Slice (73B chunks) → Encrypt (ChaCha20) → Header (7B) → Mask → FEC → UDP (124B)

Reassembly Pipeline:

UDP (124B) → Unmask → Decrypt → Buffer by seq → RaptorQ decode → IP Packet

Key Derivation:

SHA256(secret || "sushStream_key_derivation_v1") → 32-byte key

What's Not Implemented

  • QUIC transport (using raw UDP)
  • Kernel TUN routing (SOCKS5 only by default)
  • Live BPF map updates (XDP uses file polling)
  • Per-user session isolation (single shared key)
  • Prometheus metrics endpoint
  • Config file (CLI only)

Performance Characteristics

  • Latency: ~RTT + 5ms processing (no polling)
  • Throughput: Limited by single-threaded loop (~100Mbps practical)
  • Packet overhead: 29% (51 bytes header+tag per 124-byte frame)
  • FEC overhead: 10-50% adaptive based on loss rate

Verdict

Production-ready for personal use. Core tunnel is solid. Security features implemented. Not audited by third party. Use at your own risk for anything sensitive.
