Part of #2686

What

A new /children block (titled "Sub-docs" in the / menu, aliases children, sub-docs, subdocs, sub-pages, subpages) that lists the direct sub-docs of the current doc as interlinks. This is the v1 scope from the discussion in #2686:

  • Lists direct sub-docs only, in the same order as the sidebar tree.
  • Stays in sync: it refetches on mount and window focus, when the tree adds, renames or deletes a sub-doc of this doc, and after a move or detach succeeds.
  • Readers only see what the children endpoint returns for them.
  • On export (PDF, DOCX, ODT, Markdown and HTML) the block becomes one paragraph per sub-doc holding its interlink, as of export time. Paragraphs rather than a bullet list, so the file matches the editor.
  • Shows "No sub-docs yet" when there are none.
  • Titles stay aligned whether a sub-doc has an emoji or the default page icon: inside the list the icon sits in a fixed-width slot. Inline interlinks in body text are unchanged.

How

  • DocChildrenBlock is a content: 'none' custom block. It fetches every page of documents/{id}/children/ (getAllDocChildren) and renders each child with the existing LinkSelected component, which now accepts an optional preloaded doc so it doesn't refetch each child.
  • The root doc isn't a node in the tree data (its children are the top-level nodes), so the block reads those for the root and getNode(id).children otherwise.
  • Tree moves update the tree before the move request finishes, so useMoveDoc and useDetachDoc now also invalidate KEY_LIST_DOC_CHILDREN. Otherwise the block could refetch before the move lands and keep the old list.
  • expandDocChildrenBlocks (in its own file so the clipboard hook doesn't pull in the exporters) swaps the block for paragraphs of interlinks before export, so the existing interlink mappings and title resolution handle the rest. It also puts the sub-docs it fetched into the doc query cache, only where missing and marked stale, because the Markdown and HTML exports render each interlink once, synchronously, and an uncached one would come out as a loader instead of its title.
  • docChildren is also registered in the y-provider schema, so formatted-content keeps the block instead of dropping it.

Test plan

  • Unit tests for expandDocChildrenBlocks (no block, nested blocks in columns, fetch failure) and DocChildrenList (error and retry, refetch when the tab regains focus).
  • New e2e doc-editor-children.spec.ts: empty state, two sub-docs created from the tree, sidebar order, and clicking a link.
  • Checked by hand in Chrome against the dev stack: nesting a sub-doc under another and pulling it back out updates the block live without a reload.

Existing failures I saw locally that also fail on main: DocHeaderEmoji.spec.tsx (2 tests), and doc-tree.spec.ts pagination (fails 2 of 3 runs on main too).

Demo

Insert the block with /children, add sub-docs, then nest one under another in the sidebar: the block drops it without a reload. Links open the sub-doc.

The /children block listing and following the sub-docs

Walkthrough

The editor adds a “Sub-docs” block that loads and displays child documents, with an empty state, retry behavior, and child links. Child retrieval follows pagination, and move and detach operations invalidate the child-list query. Export and clipboard conversion expand child blocks into links. Tests cover editor behavior, navigation, provider conversion, and export expansion.

The PR remains mergeable with owner awareness, but exports may not have the promised bullet-list format and may perform an unnecessary child lookup. The changelog entry also needs correction.

Cool stuff !
For the command / I'd go for /sub-docs.
One question : @MashdorDev the block containing the subdocs is not editable right, so the ordering is the one in the tree ?

Excellent proposal, well done!
In the demo, it seems the page needs to be refreshed to display the subpages. Is that correct, @MashdorDev?
If so, that’s the only UX issue on my side.

Thanks!

@virgile-dev /sub-docs already works, it's one of the aliases along with children, subdocs and sub-pages. I'll use it for the menu label too. And yes, the block is read-only and the order is the tree order, the children endpoint sorts by path like the sidebar does.

@robin-lecomte for sub-docs you add, rename or move yourself there's no refresh, the list follows the tree. If someone else adds one from their own session, you only see it the next time the doc loads since nothing polls. I can refetch when the tab gets focus again if you think that's worth it.

@MashdorDev If the performance impact is reasonable, I’m in favor of keeping the sub-docs list as up to date as possible. Refreshing it when the tab regains focus sounds like a good improvement

Great work, I did quite a thorough QA on this one.

Testing QA with Claude (maybe a bit too thorough ^^)

Here are 2 comments that maybe you can address

  • Note same pading when there is an emoji or no emoji causing list not to feel align on the left. Was here before your PR but nice if fixed

  • Bullet point are added in PDF export, non-blocking, but best would be to not show them to stay close to rendering in editor

🚀 Performance & Scalability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Skip child expansion for formats this exporter does not handle.

For Markdown or HTML, ModalExport calls docToBlob first and then expands the child blocks again in its fallback path. This call fetches every child page without using the result. Check the format before expansion, or call docToBlob only for PDF, DOCX, and ODT.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Generate list items for exported sub-docs.

When a document has sub-docs, type: 'paragraph' exports one unbulleted paragraph per child. The stated export behavior is a bullet list of interlinks. Generate supported bullet-list blocks and check the output in each export format.

Thanks both. Rebased on main and tested on a local v6 stack.

@robin-lecomte the list refetches when the tab regains focus, with a test. A failed refetch keeps the current list.

@virgile-dev

  • Titles line up with or without an emoji.
  • Exports use plain paragraphs, so no bullets in PDF, DOCX or ODT.

Your QA checklist caught a real bug in D1: y-provider had no docChildren spec, so formatted-content dropped the block. I added the spec and a conversion test. The other open cases:

  • E5, E8 and G4 pass. I also fixed HTML and Markdown exports showing a loader instead of an uncached sub-doc's title.
  • E6 and E7 no longer apply, copy-as was removed on main.
  • F1 to F3 are covered by unit tests.

On A10 and D4: the block always shows the current sub-docs of the doc it sits in, so a pasted block lists its new parent's sub-docs and version history shows today's list. Tell me if you want either to work differently.
