Purpose

Fixes #2807
Fixes #2878

A comment added on a doc link is a comment mark on the inline node itself. As analysed in #2878, y-prosemirror only stores the attributes of an element node in Yjs, never its marks (createTypeFromElementNode, createNodeFromYElement). The highlight only lived in the local editor: it was lost on reload, and collaborators never saw it.

Proposal

  • Add a commentMarks prop (inlineNodeCommentsPropSchema) to the inline nodes without content, interlinkingLinkInline for now. It holds a JSON copy of the node's comment marks, and y-prosemirror stores it as a Y.XmlElement attribute.
  • Add InlineNodeCommentsExtension, a single ProseMirror plugin (appendTransaction) registered in BlockNoteEditor and BlockNoteReader:
    • a local change writes the marks into the prop. The marks are the source of truth.
    • a change coming from Yjs (ySyncPluginKey meta isChangeOrigin: load, collaborator, undo) rebuilds the nodes without marks, so the plugin restores the marks from the prop. The restoring transaction is also tagged isChangeOrigin.
    • it only scans the changed range of the document.
    • it keeps the addToHistory of the last transaction, so undo still covers the comment.
    • it ignores an invalid stored value instead of throwing, because y-prosemirror deletes an element it cannot build.
  • Tests:
    • vitest with a real collaborative editor: reload, resolved state, removal, collaborator, undo/redo, invalid values. 4 of them fail without the fix.
    • a guard test: every content: 'none' inline content of the editor schema spreads the prop.
    • an e2e test: a comment on a doc link survives a reload.

Inline math needs no change. It is content: 'plain', so the comment mark lands on its text, which Yjs already stores (covered by a test). In BlockNote 0.54 the formatting toolbar, and so "Add comment", is also hidden when the selection spans inline math (FormattingToolbar → spansPlainContent), so it can't be commented from the UI.

Why not patch y-prosemirror: yjs/y-prosemirror#47 was closed as not planned and yjs/y-prosemirror#63 was never merged. This follows the "store node attributes instead" advice linked in #2878.

Notes and limitations

  • ✨(frontend) mention users in the editor from the @ dropdown #2806: userMentionInline is also content: 'none'. It needs ...inlineNodeCommentsPropSchema in its propSchema, and the guard test will point at it.
  • If two users comment the same doc link at the same moment, the last write wins on the prop. Text comments don't have this issue, because their marks are keyed by hash.
  • The prop shows in the blocks JSON and as data-comment-marks in the HTML export.
  • Clients still on the old code ignore the prop. I checked in the browser that opening a commented doc with the old code doesn't remove it: the highlight came back once the fix was loaded again.

Walkthrough

The change adds an extension that stores inline-node comment marks in a node attribute and restores them from Yjs updates. The editable editor and reader register the extension, and the interlinking inline-content schema includes the attribute. Unit and end-to-end tests cover reload persistence and related comment behavior.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The changes satisfy #2807 by adding commentMarks to interlinkingLinkInline and restoring comment marks after Yjs changes. InlineNodeCommentsExtension registers in both BlockNoteEditor and BlockNoteReader. The reported tests cover reload, collaborator updates, resolved comments, removal, undo/redo, invalid values, and inline math. The schema guard covers every current content: 'none' inline node. User mentions remain identified as follow-up scope, not a current implementation requirement.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The extension, inline-node schema change, editor and reader registration, tests, end-to-end coverage, and changelog entry support comment persistence for inline nodes. No unrelated product change is demonstrated.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

No functions found in the changed files to evaluate docstring coverage. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 0 functions across 7 files. (1 skipped: 1 unsupported.)

A comment on a doc link is a comment mark on the inline node itself,
and y-prosemirror only stores the attributes of an element node in
Yjs, never its marks. The highlight only lived in the local editor:
it was lost on reload and never reached the collaborators.

The inline nodes without content now keep a copy of their comment
marks in a commentMarks prop, that y-prosemirror does store, and
InlineNodeCommentsExtension restores the marks from it when a node
comes back from Yjs (load, collaborator, undo).

Comments on inline math are already kept: the mark is on the text
inside the math, that Yjs stores.
