Describe the bug

On an empty Yazi profile, I just added the configuration for Folder‐specific rules as is on the page https://yazi-rs.github.io/docs/tips
Like in any other folder, I expect subfolders are listed in front of files.

Minimal reproducer

Surprisingly, unlike the other folders, in the Downloads folder, files and subfolders are mixed.
Manually choosing other sorting methods in this folder doesn’t help.
After some tinkering, I inverted the last false on the line:
opt.by, opt.reverse, opt.dir_first = "mtime", true, false
This did put folders in front, but the sorting methods still have problems: you can’t properly sort by let’s say extension or by size. Moreover, the bug extends on any folder, not only the ones listed explicitly in the plugin: the sorting (let’s say again) on extension or size is still broken in any folder.

Hello, @apprenti-sorcier perhaps you're not using the nightly version (which is why ya env doesn't work), but rather version 26.5.6. You should use yazi --debug instead.

Could you please share the output of yazi --debug? That would help me gather more information to assist you.

If I understand correctly, what you want is:

In the Downloads folder: Force sorting by modification time (mtime), with folders on top (dir_first = true)

In all other folders: Sort alphabetically with folders on top

If so, you can simply follow the method provided at https://yazi-rs.github.io/docs/tips/#folder-rules.

Just change this part:

    opt.by, opt.reverse, opt.dir_first = "mtime", true, false

from opt.dir_first = false to true:

if cwd:ends_with("Downloads") then
    opt.by, opt.reverse, opt.dir_first = "mtime", true, true

I tested this on my Arch Linux system and did not encounter any of the global sorting issues you mentioned (unless you manually modified the logic in the else branch?).

On Arch Linux I can only install what is in the repository.
On Windows I installed yazi‐nightly from scoop, but the result is the same on both systems and irrespective of yazi or yazi‐nightly.
On both, I ran with a new and empty yazi profile.
I sort the main Documents by size (,s): it’s sorted immediately, no problem. N.B. Documents is not concerned by the folder‐rules as they are.
I put the folder rules as indicated on the tips page, then I go to the same folder and sort by size: files are sorted as such 13k, 1.3k, 1.1M, 654B… It makes no sense; they seem to stay min alphabetical order.
I sort again by size (,s): no change.
Once again ,s: now at the third attempt, they are listed in the ascending size order.
I hope it helps. I think it’s totally reproducible.

@apprenti-sorcier Yes, I can fully reproduce your issue. I performed the same operations on both Windows and Arch Linux. During my testing, I found that if the sorting is currently set to ascending size order, then moving up or down once or twice (by pressing j or k) causes the sorting to revert back to alphabetical order (which should be the logic in the else branch). However, files in the Downloads folder do not revert back to alphabetical order.

When I disabled the main.lua corresponding to folder-rules, I was able to use ,s to sort by size normally. So I think it's likely just an issue with this folder-rules plugin, rather than a bug in the Yazi software itself.

@apprenti-sorcier The folder-rules in the tips page is buggy. "ind-sort" fires very often, so when you press ,s to sort by size, it immediately gets overridden to sort by mtime again. Here's what I have in my config to fix it:
