I’m not sure it’s the same issue, but I can’t start the app either in version 18.0 (F‑Droid, Android 6.0, Huawei). I have this adb logcat:

This is still happening, both for Thunderbird and K-9. Whatever update recently happened, it needs to be reverse. There's no way to get this running now, so I've ceased to use these apps altogether.

We're not going to fix this as we have to drop support for Android 6 as Google started to phase out Android 6 support in their libraries: #11545
