Notification Settings — Document Folder Settings Split #11681

Closed

Description

@dani-zilla

This task will help plan the next phase of the folder settings redesign, as well as create a document that explains where these settings are moving to. We can add screenshots to it later, but the main goal here is to better define where these settings will go. Visibility settings, for example, may stay with the general folder settings, while sync will move. These are designs we have to finalize with design, so a meeting to discuss the new placement of folder settings like "Show in top group," "show folder," and "unify" may be relocated to the general settings. We may also rename/explain "Unify" better, as there is some confusion here as to how it relates to the unified inboxes.

The overall structure that we have planned for the end of this redesign is as follows:

  • Settings
    • Account Settings
      • Sync & Notifications (including per-folder push)
        • (Part of a later plan: adding a global "Enable push notifications" switch to this level to enable push on inbox and any other previously selected folders)
      • General Settings
        • Manage Folders (possibly with three visibility options discussed above)

With this, managing folders will no longer be a top-level option. This is, because when it does not include syncing options, it is not a setting a user would have to access frequently, and can clutter the view at the high level. Here, Manage Folders, for assigning inbox settings (and, if design agrees, visibility settings), will be found in a more central location, while sync and notification settings, including per-folder options, will be in one place.
