GraphCache"updates" mutation updater not being called

I love URQL. It has been so easy to work with, and using schema-awareness, I everything just works out of the box.

I'm trying to optimize an insert, and reading https://urql.dev/docs/graphcache/cache-updates it sounds like if I add an updater, I can prevent GraphCache from fetching related queries.

Copying the code verbatim then changing the field name, the function is not called when a mutation occurs - there is no console message logged. update_items_by_pk is a root mutation. I'm using GraphCache 9.0. URQL 5.0.2. Is the documentation out of sync, or is there something else going on I wonder? This is using Postgres Hasura via Nhost.

It turns out "Mutation" should be "mutation_root" by looking at the schema. This is "Nhost" which uses Hasura.
The updater now looks something like this and prevents the query from making any network requests:
