What changed

The AI mode of the command palette is laid out as a quick ask, not a chat. The newest answer sits under the input, and a longer conversation is offered a move to the AI chats panel.

  • Newest first. The newest turn sits right under the input, where the next question is typed. A new question scrolls there; nothing else scrolls the panel, so a streamed answer never pulls a reader away from an earlier turn.
  • Question and answer. The question reads as a heading, with the asker's initials. The answer, the tools it ran and the follow-ups sit under it as plain content, with no bubble or box. Before, a "You" label overflowed its badge into the question.
  • Earlier turns. Each shrinks to one line: the question and the first sentence of its answer. A click opens it again, and its chevron shrinks it back. A turn waiting on an approval stays open, so its Run button stays in reach.
  • Continue in AI chats. After three turns, a strip under them offers "Continue in AI chats", with Cmd+Enter (Ctrl+Enter elsewhere) as the shortcut and an "Open in chats" footer hint. The chats panel does not exist yet, so the hand-off shows an alert for now, from one function the panel will replace.
  • Suggestions. Each has its own icon. One asks for a change and carries an Action badge, so the approval step is something a user can try on purpose.
  • Tool trace. One quiet line under the answer from the first call to the end. It reads "Running" while the turn works, with a spinner on a call in flight, and "Ran" once it settles, without moving or changing style. It lists only tools that returned or failed, so a change still waiting for approval, or one that was rejected, is not listed as having run.
  • Answer text. Body size and the primary text colour, instead of the small grey Markdown default, with a 24px line height and paragraphs stopping at about 70 characters. Tables get a header rule, padded rows and tabular figures, and ids in cells lose the code background. The Markdown component's own defaults are unchanged.
  • Follow-ups. The model suggests up to three next questions, shown as chips under the newest answer only. Clicking one asks it. Chips, suggestions and collapsed turns have hover, pressed and keyboard focus states.
  • Approval card. An "Approve this change" heading, then one step per tool with its arguments exactly as the tool will receive them, one per line. It is still the real input, not a summary written by the model. A destructive change says "Cannot be undone".
  • Errors. Shown in their own block, not as red text inside the answer.
  • Footer. Names the model that answered, e.g. "Webiny AI · claude-opus-5".
  • Text joins. Text from separate model steps used to run together ("I'll look that up.3 products are on sale."), and so did the text before and after an approval. Both now start a new paragraph.
  • Summary line. The turn view model gets answerStart, where the text after the last tool call begins. A collapsed turn summarises from there, so the model's "I'll check the content models first." does not stand in for the answer.

Server

  • AdminAssistantUseCase emits a start event with the resolved model, and a follow-ups event.
  • Follow-ups come from a suggestFollowUps tool defined inside the assistant (followUps.ts), not registered as an AiSdkToolDefinition, so other AI callers never see it. It runs without approval and gets no chip. The agent loop stops on it (hasToolCall), so it costs no extra model step.
  • The system prompt asks for the call after an answer, and not when the answer failed or a change waits for approval. Follow-ups are sent once, at the end of a run, and only when no approval is pending, so they never describe the moment before a decision.
  • Text that resumes after a tool call is prefixed with a paragraph break.

Not in this PR

  • Result rows with "Open ↵" and arrow-key navigation. Answers are still markdown. Rows need tools to return structured items, drawn with the palette's existing command rows.
  • The expand control in the input row, and the real chats panel behind "Continue in AI chats".
  • A link from the "no model configured" error to the settings page. The settings route lives in ai-powerups, which the palette cannot depend on. The message already names the setting.
  • The design's "↵" on the Run button. Enter sends the input today, and binding it to approve a change, including destructive ones, is too easy to trigger by accident.

Tests

  • AdminAssistantUseCase.test.ts: the start event, the follow-ups event with no chip, a malformed or oversized follow-ups call, no follow-ups while an approval waits, the tool offered without approval and stopping the loop, and the paragraph break after a tool call.
  • New AdminAssistantPresenter.test.ts: model, follow-ups, answerStart, and the paragraph break when a run resumes after an approval.
  • ai-powerups 98 passed, app-admin 574 passed. Lint and builds are clean.
  • Checked in a local admin against claude-opus-5: suggestions, an answer, a proposed folder (rejected, nothing created), and the reply after it. The error block was not checked in the browser, since the local instance has a model configured.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The AI assistant now suggests follow-up questions after answering. Select a suggestion to ask it, or choose from updated command-palette suggestions, including a clearly labeled action.
    • See which AI model handled the latest run and review completed tool activity.
    • Approval requests now show clearer step details and change counts.
  • Improvements
    • Assistant errors are easier to spot, and resumed text is separated for readability.
    • Follow-up suggestions are hidden when an answer has an error or is awaiting approval.

The AI mode of the command palette now follows the Claude Design
reference more closely:

- The question shows the user's avatar. It used to be a "You" label
that spilled out of its badge.
- Suggestions get their own icons, and one asks for a change, marked
  with an Action badge.
- Tool chips show while a turn runs. Once it settles, they fold into a
quiet "Ran ..." line under the answer, which lists only tools that
returned or failed, not a change still waiting for approval.
- The model suggests up to three follow-up questions, shown as chips.
- The approval card lists each step with its arguments exactly as the
tool will get them, one per line, under an "Approve this change"
  heading.
- Errors show in their own block, not as red text.
- The footer names the model that answered.
- Text from separate model steps, and from the run after an approval,
  no longer runs together.

On the server, the assistant emits a "start" event naming the model,
and a "follow-ups" event. Follow-ups come from a suggestFollowUps tool
defined inside the assistant only, so other AI callers never see it.
The agent loop stops as soon as it is called, so it costs no extra
model step.

⚠️ 3 thing(s) worth a look before merging.

The diff is large but coherent with the stated UI/UX-polish scope (component restructuring, new follow-ups feature, tests); no footprint mismatch, no secrets, no debug leftovers, no merge markers, and the per-file changes match the described feature work.

🚨 Should this be in the PR?

🟡 Low — Revert/re-apply commits in history

The commit list shows 'feat(app-admin-ui): lay the assistant out as a quick ask, not a chat' followed by a Revert of it, then later a 'Revert "Revert ..."' restoring it. This is noisy but appears intentional (iterating on a design during review) and the final diff is coherent with the PR's stated scope, so this is low-severity history noise rather than a sign of lost work.

📏 Code-style rule checks

🟡 Low — Multiple named imports per line (one-import-per-line.md)

packages/app-admin-ui/src/CommandPalette/components/AiTurn.tsx adds import { Markdown } from "@webiny/admin-ui"; and import { Text } from "@webiny/admin-ui"; on separate lines (good), but note the PR has a dedicated commit 'style: one named import per line in the assistant files' addressing this; spot-checked files (createAiMode.tsx, AiTurn.tsx, ApprovalPlan.tsx) all import one named symbol per line. No violations found after review.

🟡 Low — window.alert used as placeholder

packages/app-admin-ui/src/CommandPalette/modes/createAiMode.tsx uses window.alert(...) in continueInChats. This isn't a direct rule violation (not backend code, so no-console rule doesn't apply) and is explicitly called out in the PR description as an intentional placeholder ("the hand-off shows an alert for now"), so this is not flagged as unintended but worth noting as a known, intentional stand-in.

Automated, non-blocking heads-up from an LLM. It can be wrong — use your judgment. Regenerates on every push.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.

Follow-ups suggested next to a proposed change were held on the turn
and showed again after the change ran or was rejected, describing the
moment before the decision. The server now holds them until the run
ends and sends them only when no approval is pending, and the client
clears a turn's follow-ups when it resumes.

The follow-ups schema no longer caps the list, since the SDK rejected
the whole call when the model sent four questions. readFollowUps keeps
the first three. A rejected follow-ups call is no longer reported as a
failed tool.

A tool with no arguments sends `undefined` as its input, and
JSON.stringify(undefined) is not a string, so the approval card got a
blank line. It now lists no arguments for `undefined` or `null`.

The presenter's view model now adds `model` and `error` with an `if`
instead of inline conditional spreads, per ai-context/code-style.

Clear the model when the presenter resets.

If reset() runs after a start event, clear() removes the turns but leaves model set. The next empty session then shows the previous session’s model. Clear model in clear() so the view model has no model before its first run.

The question now sits in a light orange bubble on the right, with the
answer as plain text on the left. That is the same split the AI chat
sidebar uses, so the palette and the sidebar read as one product, and it
tells the user's words from the assistant's without an avatar. The
avatar and the identity lookup that fed it are gone.

Follow-up chips are now bordered rectangles, as in the sidebar, rather
than pills.

Answers rendered at the shared Markdown default, small and grey, which
suits a line of field help but made a full answer read like a footnote.
They now use body size and the primary text colour, with the line
height and paragraph and list spacing of the AI chat sidebar. Tables get
a header rule and padded rows instead of bare cells.

Only the palette's answer changes; the Markdown component's defaults
stay as they are for the other places that use it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The answer gets the assistant's sparkle at its start, with everything
under it indented beside the icon, instead of a bubble of its own. It
can hold a table or the approval card, and a box around those would be
a card inside a card. The question bubble gets a tighter bottom-right
corner so it reads as speech.

Turns are separated by a hairline, and follow-up chips show on the
latest turn only, since older suggestions are no longer the next thing
to ask.

Paragraphs and list items stop at about 70 characters a line and wrap
with text-wrap: pretty. Tables use tabular figures and drop the code
background on ids in cells. Suggestions and follow-up chips get a hover
transition, a pressed state and a keyboard focus ring.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Tools showed as green chips above the answer while a turn ran, then
those chips disappeared and the same tools came back as a grey "Ran"
line under the answer once it settled: the same thing, moved and
restyled at the end.

They are now one line under the answer from the first call to the end.
It reads "Running" while the turn works, with a spinner on a call still
in flight, and "Ran" once it settles. ToolChip is gone.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The answer text and the tools it ran now sit in a light bordered box
beside the assistant's mark, which moves into a small circle. The
approval card and the follow-up chips go under the box, not inside it,
so the approval card is never a card inside a card. A failed turn shows
the error block in place of the box, and a run with no text, such as
one that only proposed a change, shows its tool line without a box
around it.

Inline code and table rules step one shade darker to stay visible on
the box.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…widget

The answer box had a border that nothing else in the admin uses on a
filled surface. It now matches Widget's `light` variant: neutral-light
fill, rounded-xl, no border. The question bubble already used the
`accent` fill and now shares the same radius. The assistant's mark
drops its border for the same fill.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The bubble's bottom-right corner was 2px, against 16px on the others,
meant as a speech tail. At this size it read as a rendering glitch. All
four corners are now 16px, the same as the dashboard widgets.

Splits the multi-name imports this branch added or changed, per
ai-context/code-style/one-import-per-line.md, and drops three PR
screenshots the description no longer links to.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The palette is for a quick question, and the chat look (a bubble for the
question, a box for the answer, turns stacking downwards) made it read as
a chat window squeezed into it. Longer conversations belong in the chats
panel.

- Newest first. The newest turn sits right under the input, where the
  next question is typed.
- The question reads as a heading, with the asker's initials. The answer,
the tools it ran and the follow-ups sit under it as plain content, with
no bubble or box. Follow-up chips are pills again.
- Earlier turns shrink to one line: the question and the first sentence
of the answer. A click opens one again and its chevron shrinks it back.
A turn waiting on an approval stays open.
- The panel scrolls to the top only when a new question starts, not on
every streamed token, so an earlier turn being read is not pulled away.

The summary line reads from `answerStart`, a new field on the turn view
model marking where the text after the last tool call begins, so the
model's "I'll check the content models first." is not used as the
summary.

@adrians5j adrians5j changed the title feat(app-admin-ui): bring the assistant palette closer to the design feat(app-admin-ui): lay the assistant palette out as a quick ask Oct 14, 2026
adrians5j and others added 2 commits October 14, 2026 21:57
…AI chats

After three turns, a strip under the newest one asks "Turning into a
longer conversation?" with a "Continue in AI chats" button. Cmd+Enter
(Ctrl+Enter elsewhere) does the same, and the footer shows it as "Open
in chats". The chats panel does not exist yet, so for now the hand-off
shows an alert. It is one function, continueInChats, so wiring up the
panel later changes nothing else.

The palette also stops scrolling to the bottom on every render. Every
streamed token pulled anyone reading an earlier turn back down. A new
question still scrolls to the bottom. While an answer streams, the panel
follows it only if the reader has not scrolled up, judged from scroll
positions at render time rather than from scroll events, which arrive a
frame late.
