What this is

Ports 6.4.x #5734 "fix: debug logger tool" (2479635) to next, together with its 6.4.12 follow-up 6e76237 ("capture debug data from the fetch-based GraphQL client"). The 6.5.0 merge carries both, and on next the Admin talks to the API only through the fetch-based client, so the follow-up is the part that makes collection work at all.

It adds an opt-in debugger. Code marks a call site with Debugger.log(namespace, () => payload). For an identity granted dev-tools.debug, the API returns whatever those call sites captured during the request under extensions.debug in the GraphQL response. Payloads can hold record content, so they go back to the permitted caller and nowhere else: never to the logs.

  • The session is in memory for one request, capped at 4 MB, dropping the oldest entries first. Payloads are serialized at capture time. The serializer handles cycles, Error, BigInt, binary data and throwing getters, and does not throw.
  • The permission check is an exact match on dev-tools.debug. * and dev-tools.* do not grant it, so Dev Tools full access does not turn capture on.
  • Capture starts for every request. The x-webiny-debug header (1, or a glob list like cms.os.*, ! to exclude) only narrows it, for API clients. The Admin does not send it.
  • First instrumentation is cms.os.list: the OpenSearch query and response around CMS entry listing, on both exits, including the one that swallows index_not_found and returns an empty list.
  • Admin: Dev Tools > Debugger panel (toggle, collected count, download, clear) and a header tag while capture is on. Collected data stays in the tab's memory. The toggle persists in local storage and defaults to on once the permission is granted.

How it was adapted to next

  • Route decorator instead of handler plugins. next has no Fastify BeforeHandler/preSerialization hooks. DebuggerRouteDecorator is an HttpRouteHandler decorator: it opens the session before the route runs, then checks the permission and writes into the route's response body. It wraps the route, so the nested GraphQL executions CMS resolvers do internally still produce one session on the one response. It covers /graphql and the /cms/* routes. The flush is fully guarded, so a debugger failure cannot turn a response into a 500.
  • Request scoped. Debugger is registered inContainerScope() from DebuggerFeature in ApiCoreFeature, so each request gets its own session and nothing carries over.
  • RequestId in event-handler-core. ChildContainerFactory registers a generated RequestId for every request container, which covers the standalone server. awsLambdaTransport and awsLambdaStreamTransport override it with the Lambda awsRequestId.
  • Logger instead of console. Failures go through the DI Logger with only the error name and message, never the payload.
  • Instrumentation lives in the storage packages. CMS OpenSearch listing on next happens in api-headless-cms-ddb-es (DdbEsListEntries) and api-headless-cms-pg-os (EntrySearchOperations list), not in api-headless-cms-utils-os, which only builds queries. Both are instrumented, and each claims the cms. namespace prefix through module augmentation. @webiny/api-core moves from dev dependencies to dependencies in both.
  • Header allow-lists. x-webiny-debug is added to the shared CORS allow-list in SecureHeadersDecorator (used by both Lambda and the standalone server) and to CloudFront forwardHeaders in ApiCloudfront.ts. The standalone server has no proxy allow-list to update.
  • Admin rewritten for next's patterns. No Apollo link and no module-level store. GraphQLClient publishes a GraphQLExtensionsEvent when a response carries extensions, from both the fetch client and the batching decorator, and before the error check, so failed operations still report. GraphQLExtensionsDebugHandler collects into a DebugSessionsRepository (MobX, toggle in LocalStorage). DebuggerPresenter drives the panel and the header tag. The tag is a decoratable placeholder in the Layout, the same way AssumedPermissionsSelector works. Both features register in Admin.tsx, because the handler must exist before the first request and the Layout mounts before the config tree.
  • Permission in the role editor. The debug entity is added to the Dev Tools schemas of both playground apps. mergeByName dedupes it when both are present.

Left out

  • docs/.bruno/ideas/opensearch-dev-tool.md and plans/debugger.md. next has no place for design notes like these.
  • The namespace text field in the panel. The Admin never sends the header, so the field did nothing.
  • The API side DebuggerPermissions abstraction and feature. Nothing used them. The gate is canCaptureDebugData.
  • No public webiny/api export for Debugger, so extensions cannot log to it yet. No src/exports file changed, so the webiny package does not need regenerating.

Deploy notes

  • The CloudFront change is infrastructure. It needs yarn webiny deploy api, not only a code deploy, plus an invalidation. Without it the edge drops x-webiny-debug. That only matters for clients sending the header, because capture itself does not depend on it.
  • Adding a header to the CORS allow-list can break requests intermittently until caches clear. CloudFront caches OPTIONS responses per path and the browser caches preflights for a day (access-control-max-age: 86400), so after a deploy some endpoints answer with the old allow-list. Invalidate the API distribution (aws cloudfront create-invalidation --distribution-id <id> --paths "/*") and reload with the browser cache disabled. The Admin does not send the header, so normal Admin traffic is not affected.

Tests

  • api-core: 22 serializer and namespace matcher tests ported (23 cases, one matcher case added). yarn test packages/api-core: 39 files, 293 tests passed.
  • New integration test api-headless-cms/__tests__/contentAPI/debugger.test.ts. With the permission, the response carries extensions.debug with cms.os.list entries, one session per request, and a request id. The header filter works. Without the permission, or with only dev-tools.*, there is no extensions at all.
    • yarn test:os: 4 passed. Replacing the log calls in DdbEsListEntries makes the two OpenSearch cases fail, so the test depends on the instrumentation.
    • yarn test:pg:os: 4 passed (exercises the pg-os instrumentation).
    • yarn test (DynamoDB only): 2 passed, 2 skipped (no OpenSearch, so nothing to capture).
  • event-handler-aws: new requestId.test.ts (Lambda id wins, otherwise a fresh UUID per request). Package: 8 files, 63 tests passed.
  • event-handler-core: CORS allow-list test includes the header. 13 files, 88 tests passed.
  • app: 4 new GraphQLClient tests for publishing extensions (fetch, failure path, none, batched). 5 files, 57 tests passed.
  • app-admin: new repository and handler tests (collects with the permission, not when toggled off, not for dev-tools.*, clear). 24 files, 573 tests passed.
  • yarn test:os packages/api-headless-cms-ddb-es: 32 files, 115 tests passed.
  • yarn test:pg:os packages/api-headless-cms-pg-os: 16 passed, 1 failed (syncStream.test.ts "should sync a MODIFY event"). It fails the same way with this change reverted.
  • yarn test:os packages/api-headless-cms (full suite, the route decorator wraps every request): 321 files, 1029 passed, 16 skipped.
  • Typecheck: yarn check -p passes for event-handler-core, app, app-graphql-playground, app-sdk-playground and project-aws. Packages consuming the new cross-package exports (api-core, event-handler-aws, api-headless-cms-ddb-es, api-headless-cms-pg-os, app-admin, app-admin-ui) were checked against declarations emitted from the changed dependencies' sources, because the local dist folders predate this branch.

Needs manual testing

  • Admin: grant dev-tools.debug on a role, check the header tag, the Dev Tools > Debugger page, the download, and that toggling off stops collection.
  • A deployed AWS stack: CloudFront forwarding and the Lambda request id in the payload.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a developer debugger that captures authorized GraphQL request details, with namespace filtering, capture controls, session counts, and downloadable reports.
    • Added debug status indicators and a dedicated debugger view in the admin app.
    • Added request IDs to API requests, using AWS-provided IDs when available.
  • Bug Fixes
    • GraphQL response extensions are now surfaced to the admin debugger, including for batched requests.
    • Debug capture data is limited and safely serialized to help protect against oversized or problematic payloads.

Ports 6.4.x #5734 (2479635) and its follow-up 6e76237 to next.

Call sites log through the Debugger abstraction. For an identity
granted dev-tools.debug (exact match), the API returns what was
captured during the request under extensions.debug. The session is
request scoped, held in memory, capped at 4 MB, and never logged.

On next the session is opened and flushed by an HttpRouteHandler
decorator rather than Fastify hooks, RequestId lives in
event-handler-core with the Lambda id overriding a generated one, and
cms.os.list is captured in the ddb-es and pg-os entry listing. The
Admin collects through a GraphQLExtensionsEvent published by the
fetch and batching GraphQL clients, with a Dev Tools > Debugger panel
and a header tag. x-webiny-debug is added to the CORS allow-list and
to CloudFront forwardHeaders.

✅ Nothing worth flagging. The diff looks consistent with the PR's stated intent and the code-style rules.

Large but coherent, well-documented feature port; no integrity red flags and no clear style-rule violations found in the added/changed lines.

Automated, non-blocking heads-up from an LLM. It can be wrong — use your judgment. Regenerates on every push.

Debug capture is opt-in and limited to identities with the exact debug permission. The remaining concerns are bounded. Serializing a shared-reference payload could be expensive, and some error responses may not show debug data in the Admin debugger. Both are worth addressing but are unlikely to affect ordinary requests.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Enforce a global budget during payload traversal.

The per-entry byte limit runs only after walk constructs the complete result and JSON.stringify encodes it. Depth and per-array limits do not bound the total work. For example, eight nested arrays that each reference the previous array 100 times form a small input graph but expand toward 100^8 leaf visits. The branch-local seen set deliberately permits this repeated expansion.

A log call can therefore exhaust memory or block the request before the truncation check runs. The surrounding catch cannot recover from process memory exhaustion.

Pass a shared traversal budget through walk. Stop array, Map, Set, and object traversal when that budget is exhausted, and emit a truncation marker before allocating the remaining output.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Extensions on non-200 responses are not published.

The response.status !== 200 check at Line 48 throws before publishExtensions runs. If the API returns an error status with extensions.debug, that debug data is lost. The comment says failed operations are the ones whose debug data matters. GraphQL servers often return 4xx or 5xx statuses for request-level failures. Publish the extensions before the status check, or confirm that the API never attaches extensions.debug to non-200 responses.
