Bug Description

Since the update, I always get an error message when installing the Homebrew Channel or other apps such as Adfree YouTube.

failed to open remote file/tmp/devman_dl_17xxxxxxxx.ipk for writing: permission denied
(developer app is running correctly)

Does anyone know what to do?

webOS manager is connected to the TV.

The developer app is running, and the keyserver is enabled.

The Homebrew Channel app is displayed,

but installation fails.

My issue was fixed by allowing the DEV manager to access LAN in privacy on MAC OS 26.

Same for me. The TV is brand new. Initial connection setup works successfully, but app installation fails.

@zhantemirov In the end, I was successful using the official webOS CLI (previously ares-cli). And like you said: After the Homebrew channel was installed, everything else was easy.

I dug into this further on my TV and can add some useful data points:

Device: LG OLED55C31LA
webOS Version: 11.2.0 (webOS 26)
Firmware: 43.21.71

Same error installing via the official webOS CLI (@webosose/ares-cli v2.4.0), not just Dev Manager:

ares-install ERR! [ssh exec failure]: Command '/bin/rm -rf /media/developer/temp && /bin/mkdir -p /media/developer/temp' exited with code=1
ares-install ERR! [ssh exec failure]: (Original Message: rm: can't remove '/media/developer/temp': Permission denied)

Ruled out an auth/session issue:

• Dev Mode session shows 999:50:24 remaining (not expired)
• Refreshed the SSH passphrase via ares-setup-device -m tv -i "passphrase=XXXXXX" — same error persists afterward
• Fully disabled and re-enabled Developer Mode (which wiped all previously sideloaded apps, as expected) — the permission issue is still present after this full reset

Direct filesystem check via the (non-interactive) shell in Dev Manager:

$ id
uid=5343(prisoner) gid=5000(jailer) groups=29(audio),44(video),505(compositor),509(se),777(crashd)

$ touch /tmp/testfile
touch: /tmp/testfile: Permission denied

$ touch /media/developer/testfile
touch: /media/developer/testfile: Permission denied

$ ls -ld /tmp /media/developer
drwxrwxr-x    4 root     root          4096 Aug 25 16:13 /media/developer
d--x--x--x    3 root     root          4096 Aug 25 16:13 /tmp

/media/developer is 775 root:root (no write for others, which includes the dev-mode prisoner user), and /tmp is d--x--x--x root:root — not even world-writable/sticky as /tmp normally is. This looks like a genuine permission regression from the webOS 26 update on the filesystem itself, not something Dev Mode re-provisioning can fix, since a full Dev Mode disable/re-enable cycle (which wipes all sideloaded apps) did not restore write access.

At this point I'm unable to install any app on this TV via any known method. Happy to provide more diagnostics if useful.

Found a working solution — switching from @webosose/ares-cli to the newer @webos-tools/cli package fixed this for me.

What fixed it:

Run on CMD not inside the webOS Dev Manager terminal:
npm uninstall -g @webosose/ares-cli
npm install -g @webos-tools/cli
ares.cmd -V
# Version: 3.2.5

ares-setup-device.cmd --add tv2 --info "host=<TV_IP>" --info "port=9922" --info "username=prisoner" --info "description=LG webOS TV"
ares-novacom.cmd --device tv2 --getkey
# enter the passphrase shown in the Developer Mode app

ares-install.cmd --device tv2 "path\to\your.ipk"
# Success

Interestingly @webosose/ares-cli doesn't even ship ares-novacom anymore (key retrieval is folded into ares-setup-device's passphrase field), while @webos-tools/cli still has it as a separate command and apparently handles the install/temp-file staging differently, sidestepping whatever the /media/developer/temp permission regression is.
