[Discussion] Working in vWii mode #19

Description

@jpeisach

I still need to read and understand IOS (of the Wii) in general, but possibly with a patched or completely custom IOS, Ristretto can be active (to an extent) in vWii mode. If possible, maybe we can try to unlock the rest of the system memory the Wii U gives in vWii mode (though I don't know if it would actually ever be used by any applications or anything).

If we find a way to get a server running in IOS, we also manage to find a solution for Ristretto on Wii systems (maybe I'll give it another name?) and we enable home automation on Wiis.

Even better for Wiis: the IOS-KD module will be active when the console is in standby mode: so remote power on could work!

There are still some things I'm thinking about:

  • Would we need to replace the entire IOS module?
  • Can we just patch a specific function or make the server start when the module starts?
  • Can whatever module we patch access network modules?
  • Would the console be able to handle running a HTTP (or whatever) server? Does it have the resources?
  • Is it a good idea to be patching a patch for IOS? If the regular cIOS updates, we would need to maintain the changes.
  • Where will things break and how can we recover?
