fix(orm): enforce field validation attributes and @@validate inside custom types - #2890

… custom types The ORM built the input schema of a typed JSON field from the custom type's field types only. Validation attributes on the type's fields (`@length`, `@gte`, `@email`, ...) and the type's own `@@validate` rules were dropped, so create, update and procedure calls accepted values that violate them, while `@zenstackhq/zod`'s `makeTypeSchema` enforces the same rules. `makeTypeDefSchema` now passes each field's attributes to `makeScalarSchema`, applies `@length` to list fields with `addListValidation`, and applies the type's `@@validate` rules with `addCustomValidation`, the same way model fields and primitive custom types are handled. Explanation
Issue
#2844requires input validation for custom JSON fields. The factory now passes field attributes to scalar schemas, applies list validation, and applies typedef-level@@validaterules when extra validations are enabled. Nested typedef fields keep lazy resolution. The regression tests cover create, whole-object update, field rules,@@validatemessages, nested fields, and list bounds. Existing strict-object and scalar schema construction remains in place.

Explanation
The changes are limited to custom-type schema construction and regression tests for issue
#2844. Field validation, list validation, nested typedef handling, and typedef-level validation directly support the issue. No unrelated production behavior or unrelated test coverage is added.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win
Apply list @length only to the list.
For names String[] @length(1, 2), getItemAttributes(def) passes @length to the string schema here. Line 497 also applies @length to the array. An otherwise valid value such as ['long'] is rejected because its element has more than two characters. Keep list-length attributes out of the item schema, and add a regression case for a built-in scalar list.

Fixes #2844.
With input validation on, the ORM accepts typed JSON values that break the validation rules declared in their custom type. With the schema from the issue:
createandupdateaccept{ caption: 'too long', low: 0, high: 1 },{ caption: 'ok', low: -1, high: 1 }and{ caption: 'ok', low: 5, high: 1 }. Wrong scalar types and@@strictare still enforced.Cause
makeTypeDefSchemainpackages/orm/src/client/zod/factory.tsbuilds each field of an object custom type withthis.makeScalarSchema(def.type), without the field's attributes, and never applies the type's@@validaterules, as the analysis in the issue points out. Primitive custom types (type X with String) already get both in the same method.makeTypeSchemain@zenstackhq/zodapplies both as well, andpackages/zod/test/factory.test.tscovers theAddresstype's@lengthand@@validaterules, so the two factories disagree on the same schema.Changes
makeScalarSchema(def.type, this.getItemAttributes(def)), and list fields go throughaddListValidation, the same as model fields. Nested object types keep thez.lazy()wrapper from fix(orm): handle cyclic JSON typedef references in zod factory (#2654) #2655 for cyclic types. A primitive custom type used as a field now also gets the attributes declared on that field, as it does on a model.@@validaterules are applied withaddCustomValidation, guarded byextraValidationsEnabledlike the other call sites.Custom-type procedure parameters use the same schema, so they are now validated too. Typed JSON is replaced as a whole on update, so
@@validatealways sees the complete value.tests/regression/test/issue-2844.test.tscovers create and update with a field attribute and a@@validaterule (including its message), boundary values that must pass, and a nested type with@email, a nested@length, and@lengthon a list of a custom type.Verification
I could not install the workspace dependencies here, so vitest, tsc and lint were not run; CI will be the first real run of the new test.
To exercise the changed code anyway, I loaded
packages/orm/src/client/zod/factory.tsfrom source in Node 22 (type stripping,@cache()lines removed) against a small stand-in for zod, and ran 29 inputs throughmakeTypeDefSchema, makeCreateSchema, makeUpdateSchemaandmakeProcedureParamSchema. With this change all 29 behave as expected. With dev'sfactory.ts, 17 fail: every input that breaks a field attribute or a@@validaterule is accepted, except one that breaks a primitive custom type's own@length, which dev already enforces. Valid inputs and the controls (wrong scalar type,@@strictunknown key, nulloptional field) behave the same before and after. The stand-in only approximates zod, so this checks the wiring, not zod's exact messages.Transforming attributes (
@trim,@lower,@upper) still don't rewrite typed JSON values, because the wrapper returns the original input to keep key order. That part is unchanged.🤖 Generated with Claude Code
