fix(policy): compare create-input enum fields as text on PostgreSQL - #2897
Create rules are evaluated against a VALUES table built from the input, where enum fields are cast to text (text[] for enum lists). When a create rule compares such a field with a stored native enum column, PostgreSQL rejects the query with 42883:
@@allow('create', anchor.approvals?[permissions == this.permissions])
// operator does not exist: "Permission"[] = text[]
The same happens for scalar enums, e.g. permission == anchor.defaultPermission or anchor.approvals?[permission == this.permission] ("Permission" = text).
Fix
This is the create-input counterpart of #2869, which handled before() enum fields in post-update rules. A new isCreateInputEnumComparison check compares both operands as text, as #2869 does, but only when all of these hold:
one operand is an enum field of the entity being created: this.field, or a bare field at the top level of the rule (alias === thisAlias). Inside collection predicates, including self-relations, a bare field is a stored row;
the other operand is a stored field of the same enum. Comparisons with literals keep their current SQL, so the name mapper still maps @map-ed values;
Enum arrays keep exact equality semantics (order and multiplicity), because PostgreSQL renders enum[] and text[] in the same canonical text form. before() handling is unchanged.
Tests
New tests/regression/test/issue-2866.test.ts (PostgreSQL):
enum list create rule: a matching list passes; a different order, a subset and an extra duplicate are rejected;
enum list != in an update rule (stored vs. stored, unchanged behavior);
scalar enum create rule, both top level (permission == anchor.defaultPermission) and inside a collection predicate (this.permission);
self-relation predicates, with a @map-ed enum literal (parent.children?[status != ACTIVE]) and a field compared with this (parent.children?[kind == this.kind]).
The create tests fail on dev with the 42883 error from the issue.
Locally:
tests/regression: 285 passed on both PostgreSQL 16 and SQLite;
tests/e2eorm/policy: all passed on SQLite. On PostgreSQL everything passes except 4 now() tests, which fail the same way on dev without this change because the local server runs in Europe/Istanbul rather than UTC;
lint and tsc for plugin-policy are clean.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Policy comparisons now handle enum values from stored and newly created records more consistently, including comparisons through related fields and collection predicates.
Enum array comparisons correctly account for matching values, reordered values, missing values, and duplicates.
Tests
Added regression coverage for policy evaluation involving enum fields and arrays during create and update operations, as well as self-relations.
Create rules are evaluated against a VALUES table built from the input,
where enum fields are cast to text (text[] for enum lists). Comparing such
a field with a stored native enum column, e.g.
`anchor.approvals?[permissions == this.permissions]` or
`permission == anchor.defaultPermission`, fails on PostgreSQL with
42883 (operator does not exist: "Permission"[] = text[]).
Extend the existing `before()` handling (zenstackhq#2869) to the create input: when
either operand is an enum field of the entity being created, both sides
are compared as text. Enum arrays keep their order and multiplicity, since
PostgreSQL renders enum[] and text[] in the same canonical text form.

Walkthrough
The policy expression transformer now detects eligible create-input enum comparisons and casts comparison operands to text. PostgreSQL regression tests cover enum-array and scalar enum policies, including relation predicates and self-referential folder predicates.

Summary
Detect and cast create-input enum comparisons packages/plugins/policy/src/expression-transformer.ts
During create, the transformer identifies eligible input enum fields compared with stored fields of the same enum type, excluding enums with @map values. It applies text casts and retains support for before() enum comparisons.
zenstackhq/zenstack#2869 — Casts comparison operands to text for enum fields accessed through before(); this change also handles eligible create-input fields.
zenstackhq/zenstack#2895 — Includes PostgreSQL enum-comparison changes in the policy expression transformer.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "fix(policy): compare create-input enum fields as text on PostgreSQL" matches the main change. The summary shows enum comparisons during create operations are now cast to text when one operand is a create-input enum field and the other is a stored enum field of the same type. The objectives describe the same fix for PostgreSQL 42883 errors in create policies. The added regression tests for issue #2866 also support this focus. The title is concise, specific, and follows the conventional commit style.
Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #2866 requires create-policy equality between a stored enum array and candidate input to work without PostgreSQL 42883, while preserving order and multiplicity. expression-transformer.ts casts both operands to text only when exactly one operand is an eligible create-input enum field and the other is a stored field of the same unmapped enum. issue-2866.test.ts checks a matching array and rejects reordered, subset, and duplicate-value arrays. It also covers scalar create comparisons and stored-to-stored update behavior.

Explanation
The transformer change and regression tests address enum comparisons in create policies and protect related behavior. Scalar enum checks, mapped-enum and self-relation cases, and the update comparison test verify boundaries of the same fix. No unrelated change is shown.

Narrow the create-input text comparison from the previous commit:
- A bare field counts as create input only at the rule's top level
(`alias === thisAlias`). Inside collection predicates, including
self-relations, it is a stored row and is left untouched.
- The cast is applied only when the other operand is a stored field of
the same enum. Comparisons with literals keep their current SQL, so the
name mapper still maps `@map`-ed enum values.
- Enums with `@map`-ed values are skipped: the input row holds enum names
while stored columns hold mapped values, so comparing them as text
could turn `!=` into an allow. Their behavior stays as on dev (zenstackhq#2867).
Adds a self-relation regression case that was wrongly allowed before.
